mach - make a chroot - RELEASE NOTES
------------------------------------
Announcing the release of mach 0.9.3 - Niger.
WHAT IS IT

distribution variation supported.
This clean build root can be used to run jailed services, create disk images,
or build clean packages.
mach can currently set up roots for the following distributions:
- Fedora 7, 8, 9 (Fedora, Everything, updated, rpm.livna.org,
devel JPackage, FreshRPMS, GStreamer)
- Fedora 4, 5, 6 (core, updated, extras, rpm.livna.org,
JPackage, FreshRPMS, GStreamer)
- Fedora 1, 2, 3 (core, updated, www.fedora.us, rpm.livna.org,
JPackage, FreshRPMS, GStreamer)
- Red Hat 8.0, 9 (basic, updated, www.fedora.us, rpm.livna.org,
JPackage, GStreamer, FreshRPMS)
- Red Hat 7.2, 7.3 (basic, updated, FreshRPMS, JPackage)
- Red Hat 7.0, 7.1 (basic, updated, FreshRPMS)
- CentOS 4, 5
- SuSE 8.1/8.2/9
- Yellowdog Linux 3.0 (basic, updated, FreshRPMS)
- Yellowdog Linux 2.3 (basic, updated, FreshRPMS)
- Dave/Dina 0.0/oven/fridge
Read the README included in the distribution for a better overview.
CHANGES
-------
- Add F8 and F9 repositories and reorganize repositories (Thomas, Ville)
- Default to CentOS configs when built on RHEL (Ville)
- Remove Connectiva 9 (Ville)
WHY WOULD YOU USE IT
--------------------
mach is helpful:
- to create minimal chroot environments to jail services in
- to create clean packages for distributions
- to catch spec file mistakes, missing buildrequires, and more
INFORMATION
-----------
mach's homepage is at http://thomas.apestaart.org/projects/mach/
mach is hosted on SourceForge; the project page is
http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/mach/
There is a mailing list for development and use of mach. See
http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/mach-devel
QUICKSTART
----------
a) On a Fedora 4 Core system, install the mach rpm from
http://thomas.apestaart.org/download/mach
b) su - mach
c) mach setup base
d) mach chroot
poke around a bit in the fresh root
e) exit
f) mach rebuild http://ayo.freshrpms.net/fedora/linux/4/i386/SRPMS.core/vorbis-tools-1.0....
If all goes well, you'll get a nice freshly built vorbis-tools package.
Now go out, experiment and bug report !
MAILING LIST
------------
A mailing list has been set up for discussion of mach use and development.
Check http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/mach-devel for information.
The list is low-volume.
BUGS
----
To file bugs, go to https://apestaart.org/thomas/trac
Always state what platform you are running on, if it's a clean install or
somehow updated, how I can reproduce the bug, and output of a run of
the failed command with -d (debugging).

This might be a bit "random", but how about Mississippi?
The reason is that Sulphur is a location along Interstate 10 in
Louisiana, US. So is Mississippi.
The development process of open source software is much like a river,
with new life (i.e. effort - patches, code, bug fixes, etc) travelling
upstream and the results of that effort travelling back downstream.
That Interstate "10" matches Fedora release version 10 is purely
co-incidental, of course...
Just my two cents' worth. :)

Xorg very, very hungry...
by Christoph Höger
Hi,
when I activated compiz on my new R61 I was amazed how good it worked.
But today I found that with top:
24420 root 20 0 672m 337m 9648 S 6.6 17.0 5:54.02 Xorg
Is that normal?

Important information regarding 'rel-eng@fedoraproject.org' emails
by Jesse Keating
In an effort to be even more open, responsive, and reliable, Fedora
Release Engineering has created an email to Trac gateway. Email
requests for release engineering tasks sent to rel-eng(a)fedoraproject.org
will now be turned into tickets filed in the rel-eng Trac space. This
will allow for better visibility in the tasks needing to be done, a more
public record of task discussions, and better record keeping to prevent
things from falling through the email cracks.
Any person that mails this address should receive an automated response
from the Trac system regarding their ticket with a URL that they can
visit to track the ticket progress, make updates, etc...
Along with using email to submit tickets, email can also be used to
update tickets. So long as you are replying to the mail you get from
Trac about said ticket, and you keep the subject line intact, your email
response will update the ticket.
Please let us know either via email or through the #fedora-admin IRC
channel if you experience any difficulties with this new setup.

changes at planet fedora
by Seth Vidal
Hi all,
I’m making some changes with how we build up the list of folks/rss
feeds for the fedora planet. We’re making it more self-service and a bit
easier to maintain for the admin group (and specifically easier for me
to put up with). For all the people currently on the planet please
follow these instructions to make sure your feed stays on there:
http://skvidal.fedorapeople.org/docs/planet-addition.html
These instructions will be added to the wiki after the wiki migration
happens next week.
Let me know what problems you have, too.
thanks,
-sv

Well, actually the license of csound is a bit problematic.
See my comment on

New Xorg
by Jonathan Dieter
I know this probably isn't the place to do this, but I'm not sure what
the right place is. ajax & Dave, thank you for the work you've done on
the new Xorg. I know there have been lots of complaints, and, as an
nVidia user, I understand them.
However, the stuff you're working on for *all* the other drivers is
pretty incredible and more than makes up for a few weeks without
eye-candy on my primary system. The way it all works on Intel video
cards is great, and I'm particularly impressed with the DRI2 stuff
(though kernel mode-setting is pretty cool too). Please keep it up.

license tag cleanups
by Tom Callaway
Just as a heads-up, I'm in the process of cleaning up the remaining
license tags which are not compliant with:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Licensing
Don't get surprised when you see me (or one of my ninjas) committing
changes to your spec files in CVS. I only have about a thousand or so to
go. :/
