RFC: Page size on PPC/PPC64 builders
by David Woodhouse
The PPC64 build hosts (which also build ppc32 packages) recently
switched to RHEL5, and hence have 64KiB page size.
This is permitted by the PPC ABI, just as it is by the x86_64 ABI, and
works perfectly well for almost everything.
Occasionally, however, it shows up some bugs in packages. This week, it
found bug #435337, which is a generic bug and not really ppc-specific --
although I won't enter the debate on whether it's a glibc bug or a bug
with the programs which 'naively' expect pthread_attr_setstacksize() to
actually set the stack size to the number they provide.
However, despite the fact that the majority of build failures on PPC
actually demonstrate _generic_ bugs and not arch-specific bugs at all,
some packagers don't bother to look -- they prefer to just exclude the
'offending' architecture and move on without checking to see what the
problem is. And mutter to themselves that PPC is 'painful', despite the
fact that it's helping to improve the quality of Fedora overall by
finding their generic bugs. Primarily for that reason, I'm tempted to
switch the PPC builders back to 4KiB pages.
I'm not sure it's the right thing to do though -- there are arguments on
either side.
For 4KiB pages:
- Makes life 'easier' for PPC builds, to stop people whining about it
finding their bugs for them.
- Consistent with what we actually ship in Fedora.
For 64KiB pages:
- Finds real bugs
- Consistent with what will be shipped for RHEL.
Note that although some of us might not care so much about RHEL, the
point about consistency in that case is stronger -- because programs
_built_ with 64KiB pages are almost always going to work when run with
4KiB pages, but the other way round is not so frequently true.
I'm concerned that switching back to 4KiB pages is just papering over
real bugs to make life easier for PPC folks. I suspect that what I
should _actually_ do is keep it 64KiB, brazen it out and LART people who
just exclude ppc builds without actually looking at the problem for
themselves. But I'm lazy too... maybe we should switch the x86_64
builders to 64KiB instead? :)
Opinions?

OK. Hmm, I've not really thought about it. At first thought, it should
not be very difficult. Only thing I am not sure is the arbitrary
grouping of the groups (ok, a bit confusing). If that information is
maintained somewhere, it should be pretty straightforward. (Only thing
is that I am not sure how it will be done, and where the grouping
information should be stored. configuration looks like the logical
place, but I am not sure)
Thanks,

- Unify macros usage
* Thu Feb 28 2008 Hans de Goede <j.w.r.degoede(a)hhs.nl> 2.13.2-12
- Stop shipping a timidity++-patches package, investigation into the license
of the included patches has turned up doubts about the rights of the author
of the midas SGI midi player to release these into the Public Domain
- Instead require PersonalCopy-Lite-soundfont, and point to PCLite.sf2 in
timidity++.cfg
- Note PersonalCopy-Lite-soundfont also has a PersonalCopy-Lite-patches
sub-package with the .sf2 file converted to GUS patch format for other
applications who require timidity++-patches to get GUS format patches, this
package contains an /etc/timidity.cfg file pointing to the gus patches,
therefor the timidity++ package now ships a timidty++.cfg instead of a
timidity.cfg
- Check for /etc/timidity++.cfg before trying /etc/timidity.cfg, see above for
rationale

Wiki slooowwwww
by Richard W.M. Jones
I don't know if this is the right place to complain, but the Fedora
project wiki has been (especially) slow for the last two days. And
I'm getting "503 Service Temporarily Unavailable" errors too.

I am not very clear about what you are asking for here, so let me try to
rephrase it, and if I have understood it correctly, we can move further
ahead from there.
So there are two different points, /mem and /cpu. /mem has A and C and
/cpu has A, B and C. A and B of /cpu correspond to A of /mem and the C's
are the same. With this is mind, if I say a task should move to B in
/cpu, it should also move to A in /mem?

Yes, that is a todo. We should get around to it as the functionality
gets implemented in kernel.

libcg is at a lower level than this. The dynamic migration of processes
can be based on top of libcg, and exploit it (and be more powerful than
the daemon I posted last year) It would be able to utilize the
configuration and other capabilities of libcg.

Beta freeze/release slipping by a week
by Jesse Keating
In today's releng meeting we decided to delay the freeze/release of
Fedora 9 Beta by a week. This is due to a number of reasons, most
clearly:
Current instability of rawhide and peoples inability to do new installs
Current state of X
Impending perl-5.10.0
At this time the dates of the final freeze/release have not been
changed.
While there is more time before beta, we strongly urge people to spend
this time on bugfixing and not introduction of new and unstable changes.
We would really like to have some testing done before we go into the
freeze period given that Beta freeze is a blocking freeze. Please use
this time wisely.

[RFE] Gnome/KDE --> Checkfs/Format --> Encrypt --> External HD USB stick etc..
by "Jóhann B. Guðmundsson"
What's the thought on offering format and do file systems check and even
encrypt and
backup ( DD ) on portable HD, USB sticks etc inn the desktop environment?
Since I don't use KDE i have no idea what the status for this is in it but
I know that it's lacking in ( Nautilus ? )Gnome.
Scenario
Users plugs in his USB stick, double clicks *computer*
right clicks the USB stick and chooses "format" or right clicks it where
it pops
up and chooses "format" choose ext3 or another filesystem clicks ok and
viola...
Scenario in reality..
User first have to have an root access to the box he's on
Then do from cli... ( given that the usb is /dev/sdb )
fdisk /dev/sdb --> d --> n --> p --> 1 <enter><enter> --> t --> 83 --> w
mkfs.ext3 -b 4096 /dev/sdb1
And if he wants to use ext2/3 (not upcoming 4) on his usb or external
hd he has to first
create fat partition and copy to it either http://www.fs-driver.org/
driver ( freeware )
or http://sourceforge.net/projects/ext2fsd/ driver (GPL) for users to
install later on windows
to support ext filesystem.
Maybe samba team members could step in here ( or share the infinite
wisdom )
and do a little/more work the other way around
( ext to Windows instead of ntfs to Linux :) ) that could be placed on a
fat or ntfs partition
and do the transaction between the Linux and Windows without the need of
anything
being installed on Windows, which then could be added to the formating
like an option
format as ext with support for windows and their little magic would be
set up on the fat/ntfs partition....
**** Possible bug alert ****
Is there really any need for the user to have root access to the
computer he's or
to contact his system administrator ( in case he has one to begin with )
to format the floppy he wants to save his OO document on ????
And when the user has not put his floppy disk properly in the floppy drive
is faced with "Unable to mount media <clicks> detail -->
and gets mount: /dev/fd0 is not a valid block device
Instead of userfriendly msg like the cd/dvd rom outputs "There's
probably no media in drive"
which by the way is true in this case...
Do the same step formating external hd connected to the computer via usb
and you need
to manually insert a line into fstab ( or via s-c-lvm ) to mount it or
do mount it manually.
It does not get *auto* detected in Gnome like the usb key in case you
unplug/plug it or
plug it from FC8 to FC Rawhide...
Best regards.

rpmlint says 'no-jar-manifest'
by Richard W.M. Jones
I get this error from rpmlint, but there's not much guidance on what
to do about it. Apparently it's because the META-INF/MANIFEST.MF file
is missing from the jar file. However these jar files still seem to
work OK with everything I've tried, so should I just ignore this?
