Package Review SIG Meeting Summary 2008-10-23
by Brian Pepple
=== Present ===
* Brian Pepple (bpepple)
* Jon Ciesla (limburgher)
* Rakesh Pandit (chacha_chaudry)
* Kushal Das (kushal)
* Jason Tibbitts (ubertibbs)
* Rex Dieter (rdieter)
== Summary ==
=== Package Review Statistics ===
* bpepple, limburger, and chacha_chaudhry will work on a script to
generate weekly package review statistics.
=== Brain-Storming ===
* The group brain-stormed for a bit on ways to improve
participation in package reviews. Some ideas were:
1. Monthly (or some other time frame) swag drawing for
folks that complete a certain number of reviews in a
month.
2. Advertise better the concept of reviewing at least a
percentage of what they submit.
3. Prioritize the package review queue by the ratio of
reviews done / package submissions.
4. Engaging SIG's to review packages. (Ex. Like how the KDE
sig keeps an eye on kde-related packages)
5. Coordinate some package review days (and do a better job
of it than we have in the past)
6. Hold an IRC workshop (or maybe a trac at FUDCon) on
package reviewing.
=== Future Meetings ===
* Instead of IRC meetings, the group will use the devel-list to
conduct future business.
IRC log can be found at:

Filtering -fstack-protector out of CFLAGS
by Jerry James
GCL will not run successfully if compiled with -fstack-protector. It has
its own internal stack management code that interacts badly with
-fstack-protector. So I decided to try filtering that option out of the
default CFLAGS. I put this at the top of the GCL spec file:
%global __global_cflags %{echo %__global_cflags | %{__sed} 's/
-fstack-protector//'}
That seems to work, in that %configure passes RPM_OPT_FLAGS minus
-fstack-protector, but when I run rpmbuild, I see:
echoechoechoechoechoechoechoechoExecuting(%prep): ...
What's with the 8 "echo" strings, one right after the other? Is that
something I should worry about? Am I filtering CFLAGS the right way? Do I
need to get explicit permission from some group to do this? Thanks,

* KDE 4.1.3 update for F-9/F-10
* Desktop User Guide
* Backports: systray
* Possible KDE spin additions: liveusb-creator
* Upcoming events: FUDCon11, CampKDE
recent bugs:
#469452: akregator crashs on startup with an imported feeds.opml (marked as
fixed by upstream) [1,2,3]
#471022: Can't hide akregator by clicking systray icon (marked as fixed by
upstream in 4.1.3, patch for 4.1.2)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
= Summary =
KDE 4.1.3 update for F-9/F-10:
- - - - -
* KDE 4.1.3 will be included in the next push to Fedora 9
updates-testing-newkey. [5]
* The work for F10 will start now and KDE 4.1.3 will be provided as a 0-day
update.
Desktop User Guide:
- - - - -
* JaroslavReznik has posted a first draft. [6]
* The remaining topics will be delegated on #fedora-kde after the meeting.
Backports: systray:
- - - - -
* According to JaroslavReznik his backport is crashing with missing symbols
due to changes in libplasma.
* So we will wait for KDE 4.2 and avoid a backport then.
Possible KDE spin additions: liveusb-creator:
- - - - -
* The proposed addition liveusb-creator has already been included in the KDE
live images since Snapshot2.
* But there would be enough space for more proposals. Currently the spins are
at 678 megs for i686 and 683 megs for x86_64.
Upcoming events: FUDCon11, CampKDE:
- - - - -
* RexDieter asked if any KDE SIG member will attend one of them.
Unfortunately both events are too far away for most of the KDE SIG members.
#469452: akregator crashes on startup with an imported feeds.opml:
- - - - -
* Short summary: akregator will crash on startup when expiry is enabled.
* We'll try to backport the upstream fixes and include them in f10-final.
#471022: Can't hide akregator by clicking systray icon:
- - - - -
* Short summary: clicking on akregator's systray icon doesn't minimize
akregator when it's already visible.
* This is fixed in kdepim 4.1.3 which will be provided as a 0-day update.
* If the fix is only trivial it will be backported to the version in
f10-final.
Open discussion:
- - - - -
o KDE related classroom:
* KevinFenzi asked the KDE SIG for a KDE-related class in the new IRC
classrooms. [7]
* The most popular discussed topic for a KDE class was a KDE 4 for KDE 3 users
session.
* RexDieter, KevinKofler and JaroslavReznik will hold this at December 6 at
14:45 UTC.

Upcoming Bugzilla activities related to F10 GA
by Jon Stanley
Ahh, the leaves are changing, it's getting cold (at least here in the
Northern Hemisphere!), and snow is just around the corner! All of this
brings a new release of Fedora! And with each new Fedora release comes
some Bugzilla housekeeping. This e-mail is designed to let you know
about two things happening around November 25, 2008 (release of Fedora
10) and what you need to do, if anything.
1. We will be rebasing all rawhide bugs to F10. This will result in
regular bugs reported against rawhide during the Fedora 10 development
cycle being changed to version '10' instead of their current
assignment, 'rawhide'. This is done in order to more accurately tell
where in the lineage of releases the bug was last reported because
over time 'rawhide' becomes ambiguous.
Note that this procedure does not apply to bugs that are against
component 'Package Review' or bugs that have the 'FutureFeature' or
'Tracking' keywords set, which will stay open in rawhide indefinitely.
If you do not want your bugs changed to version '10', add the
FutureFeature keyword. If you need help changing a large amount of
bugs manually, we'd be glad to help. Stop by #fedora-qa on
irc.freenode.net and we'll help you.
2. All bugs for EOL releases (at this point, Fedora 8) will get a
comment on or about GA of Fedora 10, explaining that one month of
maintenance remains, and to either move the bug to a later version if
still applicable, or they will be automatically closed in one month
with a resolution of WONTFIX.
More about these processes is here:

Fedora 11 font package changes proposal (renames, splits, etc)
by Nicolas Mailhot
Hi,
If you've received this message directly (not via a list) you're
concerned by the font package changes proposed for Fedora 11:
— the changes touch one of your packages or
— the changes touch/need one component you're lead on (comps, packagedb,
rpm…)
Please reply to the fedora fonts list however to keep the discussion in
a single place.
The complete list of proposed changes is published there
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Fonts_SIG_Fedora_11_packaging_changes
All is open to discussion, and it's on a wiki page, so don't hesitate to
complete/correct it.
This list is pretty ambitious and requires buy-in by many people to be
executed properly. Not to mention that the Fedora 11 cycle will start
soon. Please do respond to the list, stating:
— your requests and comments (if any)
— if you will change your packages along those lines for Fedora 11
— if you will allow other packagers to change your packages in your
stead
— if you totally object to one part of the proposal, and why
Unless there is strong opposition I will apply those changes to my own
packages (and to vera and liberation if their maintainers are ok with
it). However, to be effective, other packagers must change their
packages too.
▶▶▶ Short proposal summary:
▶ package renames, to fix the naming discrepancies that have crept in
with the repository growth
(different packagers followed different conventions)
▶ package splits, to offer more flexibility to spin groups and fedora
users
▶ new comps groups, to group related fonts together
(gfs fonts, sil fonts, etc)
▶ reminder of the ongoing fontconfig guidelines change
(still waiting for fontconfig upstream to comment on)
▶ new packaging template and macros
(to put in rpm? some other place?)
▶▶▶ Rationale:
▶ help spins and users
Wanting serif from dejavu, mono from liberation, and sans from tiresias,
without dragging in all the other dejavu/liberation/tiresias fonts is a
valid setup.
▶ help packagers and package reviewers
Inconsistent repository and fuzzy rules mean package reviews drag on
while the kinks are ironed out, which is not fun at all for everyone
involved. Much better to have clear conventions packagers can identify
before hitting review stage.
▶▶▶ Proof of concept:
Dejavu has been used to proof the concepts in rawhide (cf the wiki page)
I hope those proposals will be agreeable to everyone.
Regards,

dlopen()/festival problem
by Tim Niemueller
Hi C/C++ developers.
I'm having an interesting problem with Festival on F-9/F-8 and I'm not
sure whether it is a problem with dlopen(), or Festival, or if I'm just
trying something stupid. Maybe someone here has a clue or point me
somewhere I should look into to solve it:
I'm developing a software which uses shared objects (.so) as plugins.
One of those plugins provides speech synthesis via Festival. The problem
is now that it crashes at a very specific position in the speech_tools
library that comes with Festival. There are module-global variables in a
.cc file which are not properly initialized, but only if the lib is
opened via dlopen(). If I put it directly into main, or link the main
program that dlopen()s the festival plugin against the festival lib
everything works fine.
So is it intended that the standard runtime linker and dlopen() work
differently in initializing global variables of a library? Or am I
trying something not meant to work?
I have put code to illustrate the problem at
http://fedorapeople.org/~timn/festival/. To get it working do:
- install festival-devel, festival-speechtools-devel, festival-debuginfo
(if you want to see the backtrace in gdb)
- First as root you have to move some files as the festival package has
a longstanding bug (#242607), which I'm going to fix this as soon as I
got this sorted.
# cd /usr/include/speech_tools
# mv unix/EST/EST_* unix/
# mv instantiate/EST/instantiate/EST_T* instantiate/
# mv sigpr/EST/EST_* sigpr/
# mv ling_class/EST/EST_* ling_class/
- Download all files of the code from
http://fedorapeople.org/~timn/festival/. It has a simple Makefile to
build the code.
- the festival binary simply uses festival and directly links against
festival and should work just fine
- The uselib binary will dlopen() festival_lib.so (which is the custom
plugin and not the festival library itself) and then tries to execute
festival_initialize() where it fails with a segfault which can be traced
down to uninitialized global variables.
Anyone with an idea what's going wrong, what's broken or what I'm trying
that is stupid?
Thank you,
Tim

I've CC:ed the fedora list, though you gave me a private reply, because I
thought the large list of bugs might be useful to someone. Hope that's okay.
- It is the 2nd largest memory consuming application running (after firefox)
using up 10% of my total memory:
6698 paul 20 0 843m 96m 15m S 0.0 9.6 16:43.17 pidgin
And I am not a super consumer, only 25 friends and 5 irc channels online now.
- It is prone to crashes and freezes (once every couple of days)
- Somewhere it lost "reconnect all accounts", and I need to click reconnect per
account.
- Somewhere it lost the ability to be clever and allow typing when the 'focus'
was on the receiving part of a conversation window. Now that typing is lost
until you click on the small input box.
- Somewhere between gaim-beta 2.0 and pidgin it lost all concepts of
workspaces, resulting in my buddy list being unmovable from the screen
I started from (often with my conversation screen stuck in another workspace)
This results in some really crappy things. If my buddy list is in workspace 1
and I am working in worspace 2, and someone initiates a talk this happens. If
I then later want to talk to someone else, i have to double flip through
workspaces (or move one of the windows manually to the other workspace).
The old gaim I could just left click the top icon twice to move the buddy list
from one workspace to the other.
- Leaves a mess in /tmp/
- Combined user accounts lead to strange things due to pidgin seemingly picking
randomly whch user account to use, which causes problems with OTR.
- The file transfer function is completely unreliable and often fails silently,
eg the other end does not even see you're trying to send them a file.
- Buddylist window icon at the bottom turns blue ("attention") grabbing when
some event has fixed itself, leaving me to wonder what requires my attention.
- When i have more tabs open then fit in the window, and I'm at the right most
tab, and I got a new mesage in a tab that's scrolled off screen at the left,
I can only go there by going through the tabs, causing them to lose the 'unread'
state.
- Once every couple of months, some accounts turns to "unvisible" (might be an
MSN/AIM protocol thing, not something pidgin can help)
- irc handling of nicknames when briefly bouncing is bad. You'll fight with your
own old nick, and with freenode you then lose the ability to privmsg.
(not sure if that is fixiable in a client, not really pidgin's fault probably)
For the features I am using, I've mostly seen a downgrade in usability
since gaim2 beta, and a buggier client. I still use it because I think it is
the best client out there right now, but I'd jump ship if there was another
more usable client, though for me the OTR plugin is a mandatory feature I want
to have. I can't switch to empathy without it.

Orphaning jakarta-commons-cli
by Anthony Green
I plan on orphaning jakarta-commons-cli. This package is still required
by checkstyle and others, but I have no interest in maintaining it.
This old bugzilla.....
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=453018
...tells me there's a new version. I have not managed to make time to
upgrade the package, so I'm hoping somebody with more interest will make
the effort. Contact me if you are willing to take this package over.
Thanks!
