libXaw6
by Adam Jackson
I've moved libXaw6 to a compat subpackage. This shouldn't break anyone,
nothing in the distro uses it, and if you're using the autoprovides
generator you'll still get the package you need by soname. But it's one
less dead library installed by default, so, yay.

memory leak, possibly xorg?

Fedora 7 32 bit on Athlon 64 X2
It happens almost daily. In the morning, the machine is fine. In the
afternoon, 2GB of RAM are not enough, it starts swapping. A logout/login
makes the problem go away for a few more hours.
I'm using Firefox, Thunderbird, gnome-terminal and a few other random
things occasionally (XMMS, Gimp, etc).
I'm not doing anything special with this machine, just a normal workstation.
If you need more details, let me know.

XULRunner status
by Michel Salim
Hello,
Is XULRunner still intended to be included in Fedora 8? openSUSE has
been using it since at least 10.2 (late last year) -- they don't build
Firefox off it, but applications like Liferea are built against
xulrunner, which makes it much easier to release Firefox security
updates without triggering rebuilds of dependent apps.
(Would be able to start testing Rawhide in a few weeks -- a bit short
on disk space right now)
Thanks,

RFC: Naming guidelines for packages extending GIMP
by Nils Philippsen
Hi,
during the review of the resynthesizer plugin for GIMP
[ https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=250210 ], I asked the
package to be named "gimp-plugin-resynthesizer" rather than
"gimp-resynthesizer". Ewan brought up the point that there isn't really
a naming guideline for it, therefore I'd like to propose one:
For packages specific to GIMP (i.e. not just extensions of a separate
application like xsane, ufraw):
Plugins and scripts(*): "gimp-plugin-<name>"
Patterns: "gimp-pattern-<name>"
Brushes: "gimp-brush-<name>"
Themes: "gimp-theme-<name>"
If a package provides several distinct features that have value of their
own (use your own discretion on that), it must ship them as separate
subpackages. In that case, the source package is named
"gimp-extension-<collectionname>" where <collectionname> is a sensible
name for the collection (see examples).
That's all of the different kinds of extensions for GIMP I can think
about right now, feel free to add to the list ;-). For packages that
contain e.g. a plugin and some brushes, I would separate them into
subpackages if it is sensible to do so. If not, I would name the package
after the main feature (in this case, likely "gimp-plugin-..."
(*): the differences between gimp plugins and scripts are more and more
blurred. For instance, gimp-2.4 has all these in the "Filters" menu,
there's no separate Script-Fu menu anymore. I'm open to calling these
"gimp-filter(s)-..." but I guess that doesn't cover plugins that render
new content (i.e. not filtering existing images) IMO.
For packages not specific to GIMP, i.e. subpackages of otherwise
separate packages (e.g. xsane, ufraw):
Plugins and scripts: "<name>-gimp-plugin"
Patterns: "<name>gimp-pattern"
...
and so forth. Their source packages are of course named after their main
package.
Examples:
GIMP-specific:
- "gimp-plugin-resynthesizer": one plugin, two additional, non-distinct
scripts (this one actually exists)
- "gimp-extension-underwater" (SRPM) -> "gimp-plugin-removetheblue",
"gimp-plugin-removetheflashspeckles": two thematically related, but
distinct plugins
- "gimp-plugin-flowers": plugin to generate flowers with associated
brushes and patterns (that provide little value separate from the
plugin)
non-GIMP-specific:
- "xsane" -> "xsane-gimp-plugin"
- "ufraw" -> "ufraw-gimp-plugin"
Note that I haven't renamed the latter two yet, I want to await the
results of the discussion first.
Please comment.
Ewan also expressed concern about the proliferation of package specific
naming guidelines. Tell me what you think about that as well.
Thanks,
Nils

sqlite-tcl?
by Jean-Luc Fontaine
Dear fellow developers,
moodss needs a Tcl interface to SQLite and currently uses sqlite2-tcl.
But sqlite2 is gone from development.
Any plans to make a sqlite-tcl rpm (for SQLite version 3)?

What should the list be called?

Thanks,

Making "upstream" tarballs available
by Soren Hansen
Hi!
After a bit of discussion on #fedora-devel I was directed here to start
some discussion.
The issue is that you guys have some neat stuff in Fedora which you
essentially are also upstream for. Now, usually when we (Ubuntu in my
case) package software, we go to a homepage or ftp site or whatever to
grab a tarball, add our packaging to that and upload it to our archive.
If I want to do the same with, say, system-config-samba, I've just
learned that I should go to koji, grab the SRPM, donwload it, extract
the "upstream" tar.bz2 from the SRPM and convert it to a tar.gz (yes, I
need a gzipped version, but don't worry about that). It's hard to
discover availability of new versions and equally hard to get my hands
on the corresponding tarball.
The short version is: It would be massively helpful to us (and possibly
others) if you could provide those tarballs in a more (for us) easily
accessible place, e.g. an ftp site or a web site of some sort.
Thanks in advance!
