udev performance
by Harald Hoyer
For all of you who are bothered by the performance of udev:
I did some profiling, where udev spents its time... so here are the numbers:
Out of 3.63s of measured activity udev spent:
44.1% (1,6s) with /sbin/modprobe
13.3% (0,48s) with persistent-storage (mostly vol_id)
12% (0.44s) with 60-net.rules
10.5% (0.38s) with 90-alsa.rules
7% (0.25s) with pam_console (which will go away anyway)
Your numbers may vary because of different hardware.

Re: Windows based installation of Fedora Linux?
by Ago
Hi all,
I am Wubi's author. I'd be happy to help you out if you wish to implement
something like Wubi for Fedora. I will not have much time to do actual coding
but at least I can point you out to the relevant code snippets (which is spread
over different projects and files).
As you are probably aware Wubi is now included within Ubuntu 7.10. The
interface will change slightly to reflect that. Notably it is now also possible
to boot a LiveCD/ISO from HD (handy to go around bios issues and helping out
people with no CD). The frontend can be used almost as is, you need to change
the branding, version.nsh, IsoList.ini, and preseed.nsh (to generate
appropriate preseeding information for an automatic installation). There should
be little Ubuntu/Debian specific code in there. The relevant code is in:
https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-installer/wubi/gutsy. If you want to submit
patches to "isolate" even more the frontend from Ubuntu specific code, you are
most welcome.
On the backend side, you need to have ntfs-3g pre-installed by default
(https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/write-support-for-ntfs), have an
installer that can work in non-interactive mode
(https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/ubiquity-automation), modify the
standard initrd (grep loop in https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/initramfs-
tools) and the liveCD initrd (https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-
installer/lupin/gutsy). And of course have the installer be aware of loopfile
targets (https://code.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-core-dev/partman-auto-loop/ubuntu).
If you kill all userspace processes at shutdown you have to skip fuse/ntfs-g
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sysvinit/+bug/87763).
Note: if you poked with the old installer, things have changed quite a bit. We
used to embed the initrd within the frontend, and that initrd used to override
the ISO initrd/standard installer which in turns used to override the installed
(normal boot) initrd. It does not work like that anymore, all initrd changes
(liveCD initrd and normal-boot initrd) have been moved upstream and the
frontend extracts the initrd directly from the CD/ISO.
Hope it helps.
Regards,
Ago

Volume control problems
by Mike Chambers
Latest rawhide install as of this morning, and am running into a volume
control situation. It seems that the icon in the panel is muted and/or
won't show a volume control. And the error message is something like
below...
No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found.
Yet if I do a detect sound card, it finds it (SB Audigy LS?) and plays
the sample sound just fine.
Any ideas?

rpmlint file-not-utf8
by Richard W.M. Jones
I'm getting warning below from rpmlint about "file-not-utf8".
cduce-devel.x86_64: W: file-not-utf8
/usr/share/doc/cduce-devel-0.5.0/tutorial_getting_started.html
cduce-devel.x86_64: W: file-not-utf8
/usr/share/doc/cduce-devel-0.5.0/manual_expressions.html
cduce-devel.x86_64: W: file-not-utf8
/usr/share/doc/cduce-devel-0.5.0/AUTHORS
The AUTHORS file is fair enough - I can use iconv to convert that to
UTF-8. However I'm concerned about the HTML files. These are
ISO-8859-1 files, and moreover they contain correct Content-Type
metadata to mark them as such so I can't see there is a problem with
these two files not being UTF-8.
Do I need to worry about it?
Rich.

bodhi 0.2.0
by Luke Macken
I'm pleased to announce that bodhi 0.2.0 has been released and deployed[0].
This release has fixed a ton of issues and introduces many new features,
such as:
• Multi-build updates. You can add as many builds to a single update as you
want. Bodhi will treat it as a single update, but will still send
individual update notification mails for each build.
• New homepage widget that allows you to keep up with the happenings inside of
bodhi. You can see the latest comments, testing/security/stable updates, and
keep track of your own business.
• Enhanced notifications. If you commented on an update, you'll receive
notifications when others comment on that update, and when that update is
modified or changes states.
• Automatic closing of bugs is now optional.
• Build-completion improvements. Package names will be automagically
completed, and if you type '-' after, it will complete versions as well.
• Positive/negative comments effect an updates 'karma'. After an update
achieves a karma of 3, it will automatically be pushed to the stable updates
repository. This will hopefully encourage testers to get involved with the
updates-testing process a bit more, and will add some automation to the
workflow.
• Extended metadata (updateinfo.xml.gz) should start appearing in the repodata,
which will allow tools like pup and the yum-security plugin to take advantage
of it and do some nifty stuff.
• Reminders. You'll get nagged when your update sits around in testing for too
long, and so on..
This release introduces many database changes from the previous version, so it
will be much easier to jump back into the release-early-release often cycle.
Soon to come:
• bodhi command-line client is almost ready to go. It needs to be polished up
a bit, but should be released soon.
• RSS feeds and public details.
• Better build-completion based on koji tags.
• More sanity checking (koji buildroot verification, dependency closure, etc)
There is still much more work to be done with bodhi, so if you're interested in
helping out, you can setup a local bodhi development playground with just a few
commands[1] and dive in.
As always, please file any bugs or enhancement requests here[2].
Thanks,
luke
