empty dns information from openvpn servers
by Christoph Höger
hi,
I have some proposals to handle this bug:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=244274
(in short, if an openvpn server does not push dns informations to the
client, the networkmanager-openvpn plugin sends empty addresses and
networkmanager creates an empty /etc/resolv.conf resulting in loss of
comfort using the plugin)
I would prefer to have an "ignore pushed dns information" option in the
plugin, as seen in the attached glade file.
The simplest method would be to patch the plugin to parse the old
resolv.conf and ask NM to use the old data. This would only require to
patch the plugin.
A better way would be to inform NM, that there is no valid new
information available and to use the old file. This would require
patches for both packages. (The patch mentioned in the ubuntu bug report
seems to already do exactly this for NM by jumping out if there is an
obvious wrong nameserver ip returned)
I would do it myself, but im rather new in gnome propgramming in common
and dbus in special.
It would be nice if someone could give me a hint on how to use the value
of the checkbox, and if this is even the right direction to solve the
problem.
regards
christoph

Errata
by Paul W. Frields
The Java beat for the official F8 release notes needs a lot of good
lovin', and fast. (And no, these two requirements need not be mutually
exclusive in this case.) Could knowledgeable souls please update this
page to include advances in Iced Tea and other goodies? I've already
updated the Eclipse page in the DevelTools beat with the latest morsels
but would welcome additional eyeballs. We need to get these beats out
to translators ASAP so they have plenty of time to translate before F8
GA. Thanks all!

User enhancement feature's request for Fedora Core 9'ish
by "Jóhann B. Guðmundsson"
While we cant agree on what should be and should not be loaded and during
install adding an new advanced user feature to Anaconda/kickstart where
advanced user can choose IPv4 or IPv6 and which services will start after
installation should address these issues until concrete solution is
formed..
***** System-Config-Services-Gui *****
1. Allow user to bind the service to certain interface or IP
# New / not discussed.. ( Advanced user feature maybe )....
2. Check if firewall has been opened for service ( when enabled or started )
if not notify the user ( and possible fail to start ) which port to open
and open System-Config-Security, Ask the user to re-enable the service.
( check again until he gets it right or just one time if we don't want
to *spam* the user with messages )
For this to work more user predefined port options need to be added to
System-Config-Security # already have filed an RFE for that
Advanced user need to be able to disable this both in
System-Config-Services ( Advanced user maybe want to be just notified
or disable this feature )and System-Config-Security
( not to mess with custom firewall rules ).
3. Notify the user about SElinux issues maybe to? # New / Not discussed..
There is also the question if other apps should notify user the same
way.. ( Bittorrent, NetworkManager ( vpn ) etc.. ) # New / Not discussed
4. Notify the user of possible chain reaction if he disabled a service,
let's say user decides to disable service A and service b and c strictly
depended on # Somewhat discussed
( IPv6, ipv6iptables would fit in here )
service A, the user receives warning and those services ( b and c )
are turned off, or user just notified, or even yet those services just
are turned off as well. ( User receives no message )
Warning the following suggestion may cause sun burn so put on your
sunblock to protect you from the heat... :)
5. Renaming some services to more *user friendly* names.
( cups to printer service for example ). # Somewhat discussed
I personally stay neutral on this issue, ( I see both sites on this
one... )
* All together rename a service . ( suggest a new name for
service --> name sent upstream --> upstream approves ( unlikely )
--> package(s) renamed --> service renamed )
* Alias in System-Config-Services. ( Could cause some confusion if
user ever had to deal with it outside X )..
* Info given to user when the mouse pointer is over the service.
* Put this one under the rug...
To achieve the user notifier we need to use something that we already have
( ideas any one ) or create a new *x-to-system-to-x-to-user msg*.
I think regarding S-C-S point 2 we can all agree that that's the best
way to do it security/user friendly wise..
Best regards.
Johann B.
Ps. Good summarization from Martin Sourada regarding some of those issues
in previously threads..
<-- snip -->
1. redefine the default set of services. Should be runlevel dependent
and it should include only the services that are crucial to
non-problematic run on every machine and that provide good user
experience as well (like automounting CD's)
2. add support for automatically turning on services dependant on
hardware. If you plug in bluetooth, HAL detects it and turn on the
bluetooth services. Should be however handled in a way where user can
have control over the service if (s)he want. That would mean that we
would need three states for such a service: turned off by default,
turned on by default, automatic.
3. Improve the system-config-services. Its great tool and has great
potential but its confusing at first look. We need to provide to each
service such a description *AND* name that everyone (well, I exaggerate
here a little...) will understand it.
4. Some services that require a change of firewall rules to run
correctly should offer such a change (but not do the change
automatically, sometimes you want to have specific rules for the
firewall, like opening ports only to specific IPs). These are mostly
server services like sendmail, postfix, vsftpd, ...
5. Would be good if we provide gui utilities for easy (and only basic)
configuration of services that has configuration capabilities. Should be
accessible from system-config-services.
I hope this list makes sense, I think I learned a lot in this particular
thread... We could maybe, if the changes are desirable and sane, add
this on the F9 feature list.
Thanks,
Martin

Re: CD burning faulty
by kwhiskerz
Thanks, I will check into it. The drive is still under warranty, so the dealer
said they will see whether it can be replace dor repaired. Otherwise it would
likely be a cable or even the controller on the mobo. I guess I should have
had the cable tested first, but I had ripped out the drive and didn't want to
pack it back home again.

My 2 cents on the whole Fedora to succeed as global wide deployed desktop are...
by "Jóhann B. Guðmundsson"
Faster system-start/shutdown! Service need to start on demand rather
then during the boot up process or
at least if anaconda/kudzu don't detect it don't enable it ( bluetooth,
printer service sis etc. ) It's better to have
the user to go through setup/installation/initializations process ( they
are used to it )
and have faster startup than enable lots of unwanted/unneeded service
during startup "for everything works solution"!
Application need to be able to adjust firewall to allow access for them
selves. We don't like it but they noob user will and if
your arguments are, the application will mess up my highly complicated
netfilter/iptables firewall, routing rules than your
smart enough to be able to *hash* an check box who would disable this
feature in system-config-security, or at least offer
a wider selection of services to open in s-c-s especially those who
need more than just an port opening ( protocol 47 48 50 51 etc.. ).
The noob user is not able to create there own *Custom* firewall rules.
Service should be bound to certain interface ( lo eth* ) instead being
configured default to listen to *.
Let the majority fedora user community decide what should be the
default application to use in gnome/kde to open/play/view etc files
and which application will come with default installation ( in gnome/kde
), do research in what people are adding/changing/replacing
to get better hint of what should be used as default app behavior or
better yet let fedora user vote what should be used in new release in fedora
( browser pluggin maybe that would ask user to vote on what (
apps/fetures ) they want to see in next release of fedora vote counted and
implemented after dev freeze? ).
Application user interface should be kept simple and simple to use with
advanced menu feature for the advanced user.
Things should work as much as possible out of the box .
99% what normal user is doing ( surfing the web, reading his email,
writing his paper etc should work out of the box ).
There must be a (legal)way to enable 3 party repos during the
installation process and set these things up for the noob user.
( moving the legal liability from fedora to the user, disclaimer or
something he has to read, approve and press ok for ).
If not move the Fedora HQ to Europe and create a legal and handicapped
Fedora
spin to be released in the states since everybody is so keen on suing
everybody in the states.
( we still have some sanity and dignity left here in Europe, I said some
:-) For their defence the states are young as a nation
maybe this will grow of them. )
Offer encryption on user sensitive data during install or even by
default on hardrive.
( browser cache, email cache etc or maybe offer the user to have his
/home on encrypted partion ).
What we do ( Surf the web, what we spend our money on etc ) is being
monitor/catalog/profiled enough as is.
Atleas if somebody gets his hands on your box/drive/laptop lets give him
hard time to actually get your data.
Lets try to start do see things from noob user perspective and not
advanced/dev user perspective.
We advanced/developers can handle our selfs the noob cant!
Best regards
Johann B.
Ps.
Why was minimal install ( no gui ) removed from anaconda?
/Fedora by the user for the user.../

PackageDB 0.3.1 open for business
by Toshio Kuratomi
Greetings all,
After an extended period of testing, I'm officially announcing the
PackageDB as open for (some) business.
== What can you do ==
* Add yourself as an owner
* Request to be a comaintainer or added to the CC List
* Remove yourself from the above
* Approve or reject people requesting the above
== What can't you do ==
* Add new packages. The plan is to add a way to enter the package
information via a packagedb interface eventually. Once entered, the
information will either be queued for a cvsadmin to look at (similar to
how requests are handled currently in bugzilla) or the request will
automatically happen if a simple test can detect that the review bug was
approved. In talks with a limited number of people, the favorite is
queueing for an admin. Please discuss this if you think it should
happen automatically. [1]_
* Add a branch. This needs a UI created for it as well. I haven't
discussed this yet but it seems that adding branches for currently
active Fedora (and EPEL) releases should be done automatically when a
maintainer requests it. [2]_
* Add another user to a package. Currently, the person has to request
the permissions that they want on the package. Then one of the
maintainers approves the permissions. I need to code an interface to
allow the package maintainers to add another user directly [3]_
.. _[1]: https://hosted.fedoraproject.org/projects/packagedb/ticket/18
.. _[2]: https://hosted.fedoraproject.org/projects/packagedb/ticket/65
.. _[3]: https://hosted.fedoraproject.org/projects/packagedb/ticket/63
== What's Next ==
The next few weeks of effort will be quick bugfixes and making sure
we're ready for the branching of packages that will be done near Fedora
8 release.
-Toshio

vorbis-tools in 7.90
by Ian Malone
Hi,
I notice that Fedora 7.90 still has vorbis-tools-1.1.1.svn20070412-2.
A newer version of svn would fix bug 244757[1]. Given that an
svn version rather than an official release is being used anyway
wouldn't testing be a good time to try to bump to a slightly newer
revision that doesn't contain this disabling bug for oggdec?
