F8devel - UI "responsiveness" improvements
by Development discussions related to Fedora
I'd like to suggest a goal for future Fedora of ensuring every
application / task performed with Fedora actually provides user feedback
at a minimum 1 {one} second interval.
Culprits:
- anaconda between go-ahead with install and first package installing
{especially noticeable because the {boring} X screen saver kicks in. You
then move the mouse to get the screen back - but there is no update to
the screen for maybe one minute or more.
- pup during an update run with about 30-40 packages. It took nearly an
hour. Each time an app covered its windows they may not have been
redrawn for some minutes.
I have no idea what causes these.

{Co,}maintainer for bluez-* packages solicited
by David Woodhouse
I've done a fairly poor job of maintaining the various Bluetooth
packages recently. Partly due to lack of time, and partly because
they're increasingly less just low-level code interfacing to the kernel,
and more involved with dbus and other system stuff. I'm becoming just a
package-monkey for them, rather than being able to maintain them
properly as they need.
I've already donated bluez-gnome to Bastien because it's _entirely_ over
my head, but the other packages could probably do with some love too.
Would anyone like to {co,}maintain them?

Is this ok [y/N]:
My answer is N here, of course. Can't understand why I need install
tetex for XFCE desktop :(
I do the also groupinstall for Gnome desktop and I don't see tetex.
Maybe need some tunings for comps.xml & group definition ?

Bugzillas for yum-plugins?
by Sebastian Vahl
Hi.
Just a short question: The plugins for yum aren't existing as components in
bugzilla. Against which package should I fill a bug?
In my case it would be yum-merge-conf which is missing vim-enhanced as a
require. So the diff would fail.
Sebastian
BTW: Some plugins have koji as vendor and packager.

Reply-To header munging for fedora-devel-list@
by Bernie Innocenti
Hello,
could we change the list configuration not to munge
the Reply-To header, so that when we "Reply All", we
actually don't loose the Cc list?
The way it's configured now makes it very difficult to
notice own's replies in threads.
Most high-traffic lists I subscribe are configured this
way: linux-kernel, xorg-devel, gcc, gcc-patches, xcb,
mesa, dri, uclinux-dev...

I have a lot more to say on this topic but for now I'd like to just
mention this Ubuntu page:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/NoMoreSourcePackages
Debian and Ubuntu's build methodology is much worse (IMHO) than ours so
their need for this is much greater than ours (but it seems that they're
dropping the ball a bit... Ubuntu is working on something called the
Hypothetical Changeset Tool, but I haven't been able to find any source
for it and the developer hasn't replied to me yet.)
The link has a complete process for something not quite at the same
stage as you're proposing here (there'd still be a spec file and patches
and delivery would still be via rpm... but the patches would be held in
the VCS as changes against the vanilla upstream source). It's
definitely good reading as it outlines a complete implementation of
exploded trees that we can compare our schemes against :-)
