F8devel - Review HAL policy about hiding partitions
by Otto Rey
Why we continue hiding partitions with HAL policy (/usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/99-redhat-storage-policy-fixed-drives.fdi)??
It's for security? Really? We can put some ACL's instead of hiding partitions if it is a security thing...
Well... just suggestion...

Moving services from elvis to Fedora infrastructure
by Dimitris Glezos
Hi all.
There is a general consensus that the Fedora-specific services hosted on the
elvis server (development of packages like `anaconda`, `system-config-*`, etc,
and translations) should be moved over to Fedora infrastructure.
Why? Because we will be able to better maintain them, hook them up with the
Fedora Account System, increase their functionality, and lower the barrier for
contributions to packages hosted there. Also, in addition to CVS, maintainers
can host their projects on Subversion, Mercurial, or git.
The Fedora Localization Project (FLP) will begin maintaining translations hosted
on `cvs.fedoraproject.org`, and continue for the rest of the Fedora SCMs. We are
working on a new interface for translation statistics, which supports multiple
SCMs (working prototype (comments, suggestions, welcome) @ [1]).
We are planning to make a mass move in the next week or two. This email is just
a heads up. All `CVS/Root` files can be changed with a simple script. If you
need to stay on elvis for some reason, please let us know so we can work this out.

please use

instead of

it is more reliable. for instance:

Errors building packages for F7 and rawhide in mock
by Todd Zullinger
I'm trying to build some packages for F7 and rawhide using mock
(0.7.1-1.fc7.i386). I'm getting errors at the prep stage that appear
to be due to problems installing buildsys-build. The relevant error in
the mock logs is (full log is attached):
Executing timeout(0): /usr/sbin/mock-helper yum --installroot /var/lib/mock/fedora-7-i386/root install buildsys-build
http://koji.fedoraproject.org/static-repos/dist-fc7-build-current/i386/re...: [Errno 4] Socket Error: timed out
Trying other mirror.
Error: failure: repodata/filelists.xml.gz from local: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try.
I have not changed the default mock configs. Nor do I have any
problem downloading the file mentioned in the error manually from the
same system, so I don't think it's a network problem on my system.
I tried adding a timeout= line to the yum.conf in the mock chroot, but
even bumping it to 180 (seconds, that is) did not cure the problem.
I've gotten the prep to go further than grabbing the filelists.xml.gz,
but have yet to get it to fully populate the chroot and build a
package.
Does anyone have ideas on what is wrong and how I can correct it?

F8devel - user configuration storage locations
by Development discussions related to Fedora
A potential goal for Fedora:
Cleanup user settings configuration
For a long time applications creates a {hidden} .mysetting file in the
user's home directory, if multiple config/settings under a
.myapp/.various files.
I think this should be tidied up by creating a single directory at the
users home folder to store all setting/configs that apps make.
- The folder should not be hidden.
- It should have a default text file indicating that it contains hidden
files that store settings for installed applications.
- It should be well named: configuration | config | application_config ?
- All packages to use this folder
I see some problems:
- breaks FHStandard ?
- every app would need to have a one time adjustment and package rebuilt ?
Some advantages:
- not mixing user data folders and application config in the same top
level {user home} folder.
- less files to read / show / search when apps ask for the home dir file
list
- easily move/copy all user configs to backup or a different machine

updates-testing is not useful
by Christopher Aillon
It seems we want to get testing on packages before they go to updates,
but we lose valuable testing time by having to wait for someone to
notice the package is there, sign it and push it.
As it is, most of my packages do not get tested in -testing but by
uploading to my people page or my gnome.org page or my fd.o page.
I could either provide the packages on other webspace i control and link
to it in bugs, or say "Hi. I built teh packages for you to test but you
can't test them right now. I don't really know when though cuz I can't
control it. Um, Real soon now! Honest! Keep checking. lolz"
Can we implement some sort of auto-signing-and-pushing mechanism for
_testing_ packages at least? I do see the value in having a human make
a decision for the final repository, but am having a hard time coming up
with a good reason for -testing.

To Require yelp or not to require yelp
by Hans de Goede
Hi all,
2 days ago I got 4 bugs requesting me to add Requires: yelp to packages using
it for their help system.
So I issued 3 rawhide updates (one bug was a false positive).
However yesterday I received a comment in all 4 bugs to please not Require yelp
?????
See for example:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=243330
Well Hurray! Thats just brilliant communication (not). So which way will it be
tomorrow?
Hence I'm bringing this issue here for debating, as I don't want to have to
keep following the trend of the day in this. Can we please make up our mind on
this people?
My 2 cents: I actually didn't have yelp installed and without it the help menu
entry of the 3 updates apps didn't do anything, it didn't even throw an error.
So I do believe that Requiring yelp is the right thing, as clicking on help
without anything happying is a bug in my view.
If OLPC or some other downstream really doesn't want yelp, they should have
some other package providing it, call it fake-yelp for all I care. Not
Requiring: yelp is not the answer IMHO.
Regards,
Hans
