Experiences with rawhide-20070502-kde-x86_64-Live
by Davide Bolcioni
Greetings,
I put the above Live image for a spin on an Intel 965 motherboard (exact
details available on request) and my findings are below. I plan to bugzilla
most of what follows, and I would appreciate directions, starting from the
appropriate components to pick.
Both "run from image" and "run image from ram" work, while "verify and run"
does not: the symlink /dev/root -> /dev/mapper/live-rw does not get created
and after a delay I got dropped in a shell suggesting that I create it.
While initializing services, a line like the following
unknown username gdm in message bus configuration file
appears, but this seems harmless. The message from BZ #238688 is still there,
but I guess it has been already fixed and this is just the DVD lagging.
In /var/log/messages a quick inspection only turned up:
...
hub 7-0
unable to load NLS charset utf8
unable to load NLS charset utf8
...
probe rtc_cmos 00:03 failed with error -16
...
Please note that the clock was however correctly set, although the timezone
was wrong (I have my clock on GMT).
KDE user switching works, it did not in FC6 because apparently the i810/intel
driver did not correctly manipulate video modes and the display got garbled.
My Benq wide monitor is correctly detected and brought up at 60Hz, 1680x1050,
433x271 mm, which is just about right.
Suspend and resume (to RAM, judging from speed) both work, although on resume
the display is blurred - this is noticeable with text, which looks as if
antialising extended two or three pixels around each character: explicitly
turning off and back on the monitor fixes the artifact.
The host has 2 SATA disk and a Plextor on the ATA bus (found using
pata_marvell, which works) but the MD arrays /dev/md0, /dev/md1 and /dev/md2
on the SATA disks are not autodetected; this prevents vgscan from detecting
the PVs on said arrays. I did not try the "install to hard drive" icon,
because I do not plan to install rawhide.
While trying to test DVD burning, which in FC6 under the current kernel might
lock up this machine as I found out trying to burn the DVD, I set out to
create a junk ISO image while running off RAM, but I found upon returning
that the filesystem had gone read-only about halfway in the process of
creating a test.iso from the contents of /usr (I did not run out of space,
was at about 75% of /).
Thank you for your consideration,
Davide Bolcioni

F7 Test 4 with USB ks.cfg
by Christopher Brown
Hi folks,
Before I bug this if someone can dupe it I would appreciate it.
I am trying to install F7 Test 4 using a kickstart file (ks.cfg) from my USB
key.
After inserting DVD I press TAB to edit options and append ks=usb to the
install options. Installation starts but then anaconda complains that it
can't find the ks.cfg file and asks me to specify its location.
Can anyone else replicate this?
Regards
Chris

Subject: Status of JSS in Fedora?
From: Margaret Lum <mlum(a)redhat.com>
Date: Wed, 09 May 2007 19:51:02 -0500
Hi folks,
I've noticed this package has been collecting dust for awhile. My team
needs this in our first open source release of our product (Certificate
System), and I'm working on a parallel port (from internal source) to
the build system here @RH. If this is not the most productive forum for
such approval, please point me in the right direction. This package was
already submitted, but it's almost 2 months past the initial file date.
The issue that needs both resolution and an immediate updated status is:
Bugzilla Bug 230262
<https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=230262>: Review
Request: jss - Java Security Services (JSS)
Thank you for your time and understanding.

Firefox not using ~/Download
by Debarshi Ray
It seems that Firefox is not using the ~/Download directory for
storing its downloads. The default location is still ~/Desktop.
Although one can easily change the settings in Firefox, isn't it more
reasonable if all applications made use of the ~/Download directory by
default when one is available?

Debarshi

Nautilus, MIME and .desktop files
by Rick L. Vinyard, Jr.
I'm having a problem getting nautilus to recognize a xournal PDF
annotation file. I have the MIME type specified in the .desktop file and
thought I had all the entries in the spec to install the desktop file
and update the MIME database.
However, nautilus still recognizes .xoj files (the PDF annotation file
that Xournal stores PDF highlighting and markups in) as an archive...
needing to be opened with "Archive Manager".
Any ideas how to fix the problem?
Also, what would be necessary to get nautilus to use a specific
file-type icon for xournal files?
Here's the desktop file:
[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=Xournal
GenericName=Xournal Notetaking
Comment=Take notes, sketch and annotate PDFs
Exec=xournal %f
Icon=xournal.png
Terminal=false
Type=Application
StartupNotify=true
MimeType=application/x-xoj
Categories=GNOME;GTK;Application;Office;Graphics;Utility;
In the spec (install section), I have:
%{__install} -D pixmaps/xournal.png
%{buildroot}%{_datadir}/pixmaps/xournal.png
desktop-file-install --vendor fedora \
--dir %{buildroot}%{_datadir}/applications \
--add-category X-Fedora \
%{SOURCE1}
and also in the spec:
%post
update-desktop-database %{_datadir}/applications
%postun
update-desktop-database %{_datadir}/applications
