Reliable rpm database corruption with rawhide
by Orion Poplawski
I'm pretty reliably getting rpm database corruption when installing new
packages on a freshly installed system:

This has happened for at least three installs over the last couple of
months. As anyone else seen this?
I'm off to run some memory tests, but I haven't seen any other messages
in the logs and my disk looks pretty good.

Alexander, I am really sorry about this. My appologies. I did not know
that it was April 1st joke. I read this just recently and took it
seriously. Probably my knowledege about modern Russia is not adequate
anymore. I left it ten years ago.

cp -p would keep timestamps. Maybe not worth it if powertop.1 is
generated, I haven't checked...

rawhide merge status
by Bill Nottingham
A rawhide tree has been pushed to the mirror master, and should show up
publically in the near future. Note that it is a very large change from
the last published rawhide, and therefore may take some time to land on
your local mirror.
We hope to get more automated rawhide pushes going soon.

F7T4 -- I tried the Nouveau driver from the LiveCD and hit major problems
by Miles Lane
Hi,
I have a NVidia NV31 (GeForce FX 5600).
I booted the LiveCD, and it correctly configured the nv driver
and set the monitor resolution to 1600x1200.
Wanting to test Compiz, I opened System->Administration->Display.
>From there, I selected Hardware->Configure and selected nouveau from the list.
I was told I needed to log out to get the new driver running X.
I logged out and then back in.
The result was that the Gnome desktop never got displayed.
Rather, I got reoccurring errors stating that something was
wrong with the "greeter." I'll reproduce and file a bug with the
exact wording.
Then, when I tried to switch to a VT, I found it was busted.
As far as I can tell, nothing was being rendered on the VT.
Rather, the video image from GDM kept getting displayed.
Each time I hit Enter, the whole image of GDM would rotate to the
right and wrap around onto the left side of the screen.

Legality of Fedora in production environment
by Dmitry Butskoy
The using of software in business and production environment can be a
subject for legislative regulation. It can lead to some legal troubles
of using of distributions like Fedora.
Recently the appropriate laws in my country (Russia) have been
significantly toughened. Now the police can check for illegal software
usage by their own initiative (without request from the owner). The tax
inspection demands that software should be registered at accounts
departments.
During such a checking, the user is obliged now to show all hardcopy
license documents (with original signatures and stamps). But there are
no any such things for distros like Fedora, which have been just
downloaded from Internet, hence the user shows nothing. In this
situation the police *must* temporarily confiscate system blocks (up to
2 weeks) for further checking...
Certainly, after the checking period all hardware comes back, but such
troubles are not allowed for normal business.
Are there any similar troubles in other countries?
How it can be avoided?
Our local linux distributors recommend to not download from Internet,
but buy their box, which includes CDs accompanied with some license
facsimile paper (just to show polices at least "something").

F7 Zope package
by David G. Mackay
It was nice to see that zope is one of the packages available for
installation in F7. Unfortunately, the package won't work on F7
(https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=238809). The
maintainer that received the bug report suggested that I make some noise
on the devel list, so here I am. The problem is that the zope version
packaged for F7 won't run with python 2.5.x (nor, to my knowledge will
other zope versions). The Zope corporation used to supply "binary" rpms
where the python interpreter that was appropriate for the zope version
was installed in the zope directory tree. They have discontinued this,
but it seems like a good solution for this particular problem.
Zope is an excellent platform for serving web-based apps, and is well
worth having available as part of the fedora installation. Hopefully,
it will be packaged properly.

Fedora KDE Channel?
by Arthur Pemberton
Does it make sense to anyone else to have a Fedora KDE irc chatroom?
I'm not too fond of being spoken down to when I mention KDE, and my
usage thereof.
I wanted to attach this to the KDE SIG thread, but it seemed to far
from the original topic.

ipw3945/iwlwifi/iwl3945 users, please test latest davej kernels
by John W. Linville
If you are a rawhide user/tester and have ipw3945 hardware, please
try the latest kernels here:
http://people.redhat.com/davej/kernels/Fedora/fc7/
I am having mixed results with the latest iwl3945 updates, but I'm
not sure if it is this particular laptop having problems or the driver
in general.
Please give the latest kernels a try and let me know how it is working
for you. Please also let me know what was the last kernel that worked
any better for ipw3945 hardware than the current ones.
At this point, I am quite uneasy about this driver. It seems to work
fine at times, then crash or simply refuse to associate at others.
I am considering backing it out to the 0.0.16 tag or possibly even
removing it (since the driver has _still_ not been posted upstream).
Thoughts?
Thanks,
John

(co)maintainers wanted
by Alexander Larsson
I'm spending a lot of time on upstream development and some of the core
desktop packages, but I also own a bunch of other ex-core packages that
I really don't have much time for. I'm looking at getting new
maintainers or comaintainers for interested people.
First some random packages i've ended up with that I rather not own at
all, since I don't really know much about them:
* lcms
* gmime
Then there is a bunch of mono libraries from when I did the initial mono
work:
* gtk-sharp2
* gnome-sharp
* gsf-sharp
Do we have any people using mono that want to take over these, or to
help me comaintain them. The work for these are mostly version upgrades
now that they have been packaged, but its would be nice if someone who
uses them a bit could be involved.
Then we have beagle:
* beagle
This generates a bit more work than the libraries, and as such its
important to have a active set of maintainers. Since it also touches
some of the desktop parts i own (Gnome file handling) i'd like to be
comaintainer here rather than totally loose it.
There is also mono itself:
* mono
* libgdiplus
It would be interesting if we could get some of the upstream mono
developers helping out on this. Do we have any mono developers in the
fedora community?
