Puppet Re: Kickstart and roles
by Stephen John Smoogen
If I understood what Luke was working on with puppet, the program is
meant to be a re-engineering of cfengine to be less of an academic
testbed and more of stable product. [I might be part of the reason for
the fact it is in Ruby.. I suggested it a long time ago when Luke was
giving a training course.]
What I was wanting from a product was something that could be added
into a network management system: what is on the computer, what is
connected to the computer (and when), what is the configuration of the
computers services (stuff lower than RPMs so that all 2000 desktops
have a useless banner, point to the correct email servers, and have
the desktop menus with the correct applications set up.), and who is
on the computer and when. Where the computer is would be even better
:).

re: fedora core suggestions
by Alo Tsum
I see some individuals got what I was saying concerning my original "Fedora
core suggestions" post while others don't; so let me clear up some
misconceptions. My point in bringing up marketing in relation to the Fedora
project and proselytizing the OS, comes from a business background, I have
my degree in International economics. I know for a lot of my suggestions to
happen there has to be "buy in". Simply put all parties involved have to
want to be a part of the model I suggested; which they will once they see
whats in it for them. I brought up certain aspects ie the "bottom up"
approach to show how this benefits Redhat in the long run. If they see a
over all benefit besides just releasing the Fedora Cores as testing grounds
for for the enterprise OS then they would be willing to venture outside of
their present paradigm.
As for the Dell situation I brought up, as I said before it would not be
Dell reselling FREE software, but instead bundling the free software with
their hardware offerings which would allow them to offer their hardware at
lower cost but again that goes back to the concept of "buy in".
As for the suggestion about allowing non technical persons to test the
software and do installs that is a great idea. The reason for it would be so
those involved in the project can truly see how easy and user friendly their
software is or isn't. All companies small, big, not for profit or for profit
have to do testing on a larger enough sample pool for the testing to truly
be meaningful so this again is a great idea.
I hope I didn't offend anyone, as I saw some of the responses seemed to be
on the defensive side.
Last but not least someone brought up the marketing idea I presented, and to
them I say what exactly do you think the "Ambassador" roles that Fedora
Project has on their site is supposed to do? That my friend is classic grass
roots marketing.

Then repomd.xml primary.xml.gz and some other files in repodata:
comps.xml

other.xml.gz

Now I have this error for my custom distro.
" Unable to read package metadata. This may be due to a missing
repodata directory. Please ensure that your install tree has been
correctly generated. failure: repodata/repomd.xml from anaconda: [Errno

I am doing anaconda --test -m nfs:/fedora
Please help me in troubleshoot this. What can be wrong with my steps. I
am doing createrepo+ buildinstall+ splittree.py.

You probably want to rebase to FC5 GOLD before doing any customisation.
Some of these error paths were caught.
Ensure you have run createrepo on your tree correctly and there are no
I/O errors on tty4.

Google Summer of Code 2006

Google just kicked off SoC 2006 and I don't see The Fedora Project
anywhere on the mentor list, isn't anyone planning on taking advantage
of this to better our beloved OS?
http://code.google.com/soc/
Just off the top of my head I would love to see someone work on system
data collection via HAL, a set of basic SystemTap scripts and getting
the system ready to default to --as-needed linking
Of course that might just be me being utterly nuts.

I've not seen in the recent past patching the kernel by fc for alsa
matters.
So probably it will be included after inclusion by final vanilla
2.6.17and inclusion of the new vanilla as a base for fc (as it
recently happened from kernel-2.6.15-1.2054 to kernel-2.6.16-1.2080
for fc5)
The current states in standard kernel
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/testing/ChangeLog-2.6.17-rc1
is:
commit a3c44854a59f7e983c867060aa906bbf5befb1ef
Author: Jaroslav Kysela <perex at suse dot cz>
Date: Wed Mar 22 14:37:15 2006 +0100
[ALSA] version 1.0.11rc4
You might ask linux kernel list or mantainer what are in the mean time
the plans for standard inclusion, hoping further inclusion in fc...

corrupt package message during FC5 install from NFS.
by Aggarwal, VikasX
Hi,
I am trying to do install from NFS of a custom distribution which is
based on FC5test3.
After formatting the local drive the anaconda-installer shows message -
"The package traceroute-1.0.4-1.2.i386 cannot be opened. This is due to
missing file or perhaps the corrupt package. If you are installing from
CD media this usually means the CD is corrupt, or the CD drive is unable
to read media".
I tried to check the internal checksum of each package with the -K
option to rpm, based on an article from
http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/6473
cd /Fedora5test3/ONE_CD/RedHat/RPMS
rpm --import /usr/share/rhn/RPM-GPG-KEY
rpm -K *.rpm | grep "NOT *OK"
For all the packages I get " (GPG) NOT OK MISSING KEYS ".
My build system is FC5. What could be wrong with my install tree?
Please provide ideas about troubleshooting the above anaconda error
message or otherwise why "rpm -K" will say MISSING KEYS.
Thanks for help

Need much more than 350 established network connections
by Wiese, Hendrik
Hello,
We develop a load simulator which simulates subscribers by establishing
a high number of connections to different VLAN IPs. Now we got a problem
here with Fedora 4, where we can only establish 350 connections from one
IP to another one. But we need to establish much more connections
between two specific IP addresses. SELinux is disabled, so this can't be
the reason. We are rather sure that this is a security limitation, which
isn't required in our systems. Any help breaking this limitation would
be greatly appreciated.
Ragards,
H. Wiese
