Alsa 1.0.11 final
by Allyn, Mark A
Hello:
What are the plans for updating the Alsa drivers in FC5 to 1.0.11rc5 or
1.0.11 final (which was released the week of April 17th)?
I have a bug (189245) for the FC5 audio, which is having record problems
on an Intel D945 Chipset based system.
Thank you

I've not seen in the recent past patching the kernel by fc for alsa matters.
So probably it will be included after inclusion by final vanilla
2.6.17and inclusion of the new vanilla as a base for fc (as it
recently happened from kernel-2.6.15-1.2054 to kernel-2.6.16-1.2080
for fc5)
The current states in standard kernel
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/testing/ChangeLog-2.6.17-rc1
is:
commit a3c44854a59f7e983c867060aa906bbf5befb1ef
Author: Jaroslav Kysela <perex at suse dot cz>
Date: Wed Mar 22 14:37:15 2006 +0100
[ALSA] version 1.0.11rc4
You might ask linux kernel list or mantainer what are in the mean time
the plans for standard inclusion, hoping further inclusion in fc...

Kickstart and roles
by Mike McGrath
So I've been kicking around this idea for a while and wanted to see
what others thought. Who knows maybe someone will be interested in
helping.
This may already exist so if it does please let me know but I would
like to setup a bunch of kickstart scripts for server and workstation
roles using only official Fedora software. For example, lets say
someone wants a xen workstation. We could setup a kickstart script
with everything they need, only the minimals and at the end, yum
update, configure what we can and on reboot, that user has a working
xen machine.
Perhaps a better example, lets say somene needs an email server that
supports SMTP, imaps and webmail. We could create a kickstart script
that installs and configures as much of it as possible in a way that
we deem secure. All the user would have to do is fill out a fiew
variables at the top of the ks script (like domain or something).
Anaconda would ask for things like partitions and network. When the
machine reboots, they have a working email server.
Ultimately it'd be nice to have this little project sponsored by
Fedora. We could even have some that automatically work with Fedora's
directory server. Clearly this isn't for everyone. I have a hunch
there's a market out there for it, and if every ks script came with
clear "What to do next" instructions we might be able to save some
chatter on the lists and open Fedora up to many more users out there
who want to do more with Fedora but just don't know how.
Thoughts, opinions, suggestions?

[stateless] readonly-root support
by Bill Nottingham
Initial readonly root support will be in tomorrow's initscripts-8.33-1.
How to use:
- Edit /etc/sysconfig/readonly-root. Set 'READONLY' to 'yes'.
- Add any exceptions that need to be writable that aren't in the
stock /etc/rwtab to an /etc/rwtab.d file. (See below)
** NOTE: This does not currently work with SELinux. We're working on it. **
How it works:
- On boot, we mount a tmpfs (by default, at /var/lib/stateless/writable),
and then parse /etc/rwtab and /etc/rwtab.d/* for things to put there.
These files have the format:
<type> <path>
Types are as follows:
empty: An empty path. Example:
'empty /tmp'
dirs: A directory tree that is copied, empty. Example:
'dirs /var/run'
files: A file or directory tree that is copied intact. Example:
'files /etc/resolv.conf'
A stock rwtab is shipped with common things that need mounted. We're
currently investigating other things. If you come up with new ones,
please file a bug.
Problems should be filed in bugzilla at https://bugzilla.redhat.com/,
product Fedora Core, release devel, component initscripts.
Things we know need work:
- a simple 'prepare' script for a filesystem that is intended to
be mounted read-only - it will update various caches (beagle,
locate), clean out extraneous temporary files, and build the
SELinux policy module.
- using local storage automatically for swap, etc.
- the rest of http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/StatelessLinux :)

As has been already said, there are dozens of firewal GUI's around,
mayber extending, and making one standard in FC would be better.
I hear firestarter is good.

/usr/sbin/sys-unconfig --help
by Arthur Pemberton
I really don't think `/usr/sbin/sys-unconfig --help` should halt and
deconfigure a machine without warning. I guessing doing `man
sys-unconfig` would have been helpful, but still. This behavior seems
to happen as early as RH8 and as late as FC5.

yum bails on update dependency problems...
by Thomas M Steenholdt
Hi guys...
I think we've had this discussion during FC5 development but in the
light of recent update problems, I thought I'd bring it up again...
Shouldn't we make yum able to install all the good updates, if only one
package out of 60 is causing problems? I.e. skip the individual packages
that are causing problems and install everything else.
My reason for suggesting this is that we may miss important security
updates because of something like this. And say we have 10 serious
security updates, and one is failing, i'd much rather see the 9 others
get installed with my nightly update.
I seem to recall that some were concerned that if would be harder to
spot errors like these, if we let all the good stuf get through. Well,
then lets figure out a good way to get the errors visible too.
Whether this should be resolved within yum or through a plugin doesn't
bother me, but last i looked at it, the yum plugin infrastructure
wouldn't allow me to exclude packages an rerun dependency tests. Has
this changed?
Thanks
/Thomas
