FC5 Sound with snd-hda-intel not working. (alsa problem?)
by Stephen John Smoogen
This is more of a place-holder for people who might run into this
problem with FC5 and not getting sound working with Intel ICH7
chipsets. I have a Dell 380 with a
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High
Definition Audio Controller (rev 01)
sound card. It worked fine with Fedora Core 4 but after upgrading to
Fedora Core 5 did not have sound anymore. The problem seems to be
either with the kernel drivers or the alsa drivers. So far I have
updated to the ones that the Fedora alsa maintainer keeps on his
homepage but they did not fix the problem. It is an open bug with
bugzilla in several cases... not sure of what the problem/fix will be.

Anything package management tools like Pup, Pirut or YumEx requires a
net connection by default. It was mentioned in the release notes that
both Pup and Pirut uses yum as a backend. You can configure yum to point
to local repositories and any tool based on yum should be able to use
that information.
The previous system-config-packages which Pirut replaces had no
understanding of repositories and would only work on media and systems
which werent updated through yum. Work is already being done to get
Pirut to work with media disks which requires changes in yum itself.
Subsequent releases of Fedora will likely have this feature too.
I have already shown you to pointers to setup such local repositories
where a net connection is unavailable.

What you want is the package install metafile thingy I recommended in
the long painful ESR thread. Just a text file with a list of packages to
pull in. Give it an extension and a mime type, and associate it so you
can click on one in a web browser and have it open in yumex/pirut. Then
with two clicks you can install whatever. Something like this:
[enablerepo]
livna
[install]
xorg-x11-drv-nvidia
kmod-nvidia
Or maybe reduce it to a single click:

Bug or "Feature" Can not package manager gui with non-connected box
by thingsmith@comcast.net
I am setting up a system in an area where I can not connect to the
Internet. I chose a minimal install from the GUI, i.e. don't make it
any of the pre-defined options. I was planning to return after the
install and add the packages I needed.
The install finished, when I tried to add packages it failed
immediately. I can add the rpms manually.
So is this a bug or feature in FC 5.

Rawhide woes: CUPS and xpdf
by Horst H. von Brand
I'm near wit's ends with two very annoying problems with rawhide currently,
one concerning printing and the other using xpdf for presentations. Both
are bugzilla'd.
Re: Printing: It doesn't work, period. From a x86_64 to a local paralell
printer, or from a i386 notebook over the network (both are PostScript
printers), the only things I can print are the testpage (via the CUPS
control page) or text files (via lpr). If I try to print PostScript of PDF,
CUPS claims the files get queued, are being printed, and then got printed
normally, but nothing whatsoever does show up.
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=186954
Re: Presentations with xpdf. In Gnome, run "xpdf -fullscreen mumblefoo.pdf",
and get a window /with/ borders and menu etc, plus the taskbars aren't
hidden. In xfce the window at least fills the whole screen, but the
decorations remain. Also, acroread (AdobeReader_enu-7.0.5-1) [sorry for the
french] doesn't fill the screen in Gnome, but it does under xfce.
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=176023
Any clues? Does this work for anybody (I'd be pretty surprised if across
the board breakage of printing didn't start a riot, so...)?

Firefox Test Releases on Fedora
by Benjy Grogan
Dear Fedora Developers,
I've noticed some funny problems with Firefox on Fedora. Nothing
catastrophic but not as user friendly as Firefox on Windows XP. I
list the problems below. But I think it would be a good idea to have
Firefox 2.0 test releases available in an experimental repository for
FC5 so that they could get testing before Firefox 2.0 is released in
September. This idea is similar to the AIGLX repository available for
AIGLX's testing, and also similar to the inclusion of Gnome
development branches in rawhide. I've been trying unsuccesfully to
get a CVS build of Firefox to work on FC5, but for whatever reason
after all is done it redirects to Firefox 1.5.0.1.
But here are the minor nuisances I've experienced with Firefox 1.5.0.1 on FC5:
1) The middle button on the mouse doesn't allow the scroll button to
appear, so that I can navigate up and down long web pages.
2) The middle button on the mouse doesn't allow other tabs to be
closed simply by middle-button-clicking the tabs.
3) Certain keywords, such as 'wp linux' to look up Linux in Wikipedia
don't work.
4) If I drag selected text into the search box at the top of Firefox
it will automatically begin to search for that text in the current
tab. In fact, I actually want to go to another new tab before
beginning the search, and from that new tab I will activate the search
box. This isn't a problem on Windows XP.
5) Occasionally web sites unintentionally become draggable. Then the
only thing to do is drag the draggable to the tab where it is already
shown. I think it happens because you click on a new tab, and then
accidentally drag the new tab outside of it's place. For whatever
reason, this never happens to me on Windows XP.
So Firefox doesn't have the same polish as Windows XP, but overall
it's highly functional. I think it's more important to have test
releases of Firefox 2.0 available to testers so that all those nasty
bugs that can only be rooted out by long term use of a test release
are in fact rooted out.

Updated Packages:
amanda-2.5.0-2
--------------
* Fri Apr 07 2006 Jay Fenlason <fenlason(a)redhat.com> 2.5.0-2
- New upstream release: 2.5.0, with new features
- Do not include our own amanda.conf anymore, use the one from the
tarball.
- Remove the static libraries.
- Update the -pie patch
- Turn on the new -with-ssh-security option.
- Change the mode of ~amanda/.amandahosts to 600, since 2.5.0 requires
it.
- actually use the defconfig macro it this spec file.
- Change the name of the index server to "amandahost" from localhost.
Users should ensure that "amandahost.their-domain" points to their
Amanda server.
- Change amandahosts likewise.
- Add dependency on /usr/bin/Mail
- Ensure unversioned .so files are only in the -devel rpm.
- Remove DUMPER_DIR and the files in it, as nothing seems to actually
use them.
- Include the -overflow patch from Jean-Louis Martineau
