fedoraproject.org
by Patrick W. Barnes
I would like to suggest switching the default theme on the wiki to
sinorca4moin and making http://fedoraproject.org/ redirect to
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/ . I have been working on reformatting
the FrontPage, and, with that theme, it looks great (IMHO) and
completely surpasses what is currently at http://fedoraproject.org/ .
For the sake of completeness, I have added a link to
http://planet.fedoraproject.org/ to the FrontPage, which means it now
refers to everything that the current page does. If you take a look at
it with the sinorca4moin theme, you can't help but agree. I have even
run it by some friends and family who have no interest in Fedora, and
they like how it looks. I hope this is a viable option.

download directory
by Rahul Sundaram
Hi
I would like to propose a couple of changes to the way download
directories are organised currently
* Move boot.iso image to ISO folder. Many users do not look into
os/images and are unaware that a net installation method exists.
* Move Source ISO images into a different directory. Mirrors can choose
not to copy them. Many new users end up downloading this instead of the
binary ISO images

release notes beat writers
by Karsten Wade
We're going to be telling you more about how you can easily help make
the release notes even better for FC5.
In the meantime, we are looking for writers to cover various release
notes beats.
You can read about this at:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/DocsProject/ReleaseNotes/Beats
If you run across someone who wants to help with FLOSS projects, this is
a fantastic way they can help document.
If you are a developer lead for one of the beat areas, I would like you
to look out for good candidates.
Enough technical and community skill are the keys, even someone who is
<1 year involved can be savvy enough. Don't worry about the writing
itself, that's what editors are for.
The work keeps you close to whatever interests you in Fedora. You get
to be on the go-to team for all the developers who need a feature or bug
documented in the release notes.
By breaking these down into writing beats, the work is something that
one or more people can do as part of their contribution.
Thanks,
Karsten

Ok... This is amusing...
by Michael H. Warfield
Yes, what I'm about to describe is a self-inflicted injury (selective
updating from development)... Thought someone might find it amusing or,
interesting, or worth looking into...
So... Because I have requirements for some of the newer features of
Evolution (in-line pgp being the major one) I've been updating Evolution
and some dependent parts from development, using yum, to get the 2.3.x
(was 2.3.6 then 2.3.7 and now 2.3.7-3) tree. It's got its pluses and
its minuses and I'm still sorting one out from the other but it fills a
need.
Couple days ago, I couldn't update because of the libcairo and
libpixman stuff... SOP... I know the drill. Wait for a couple of days
for the dependencies to settle.
Today, I'm able to update Evolution and get a bunch of gnome related
updates in the mix... Ok... Cool.
So... Now... I restart Firefox. NO CHARACTERS! Almost blank (text
free) pages. Images are fine but it's like there is no character set
and/or all the typed letters are blank. Sigh... Didn't expect that!
Ok... So... What the heck... Updated to Firefox from development.
Seemed to go ok and yum insisted on updating nspr (and only nspr) in the
processes. Ok... Try it again. Now Firefox won't even load. It gets
an error in a gtk library somewhere about a font map symbol not existing
Curiously enough... Mozilla looks just fine.
Sigh... Removed Firefox and reloaded from FedoraCore Updates Released.
Back to text free pages. :-(
Of course, it's also a catch-22 that I can't see any dialog boxes to
even try to change the fonts. Everything seems to be cool on fonts,
it's just Firefox... Very strange...
So I'm back on Mozilla until I can figure out where fonts disappeared
to in Firefox.
Any thoughts?
Mike

"hard core" linux
by Paul A Houle
I think a lot of the people who have problems with Fedora would be
happy to have an alternative ("fork" distribution) to work on.
It looks easy to spin a custom distribution -- basically you can
unpack the fedora DVD on your web site, remove any RPMs you don't want
from the RPMS directory, add any ones that you want, run a few
scripts, and then cut your ISOs. All you need is 15 GB or so of free
disk space.
It would be trivial to develop a distribution that consists of a
subset of Fedora Core packages plus packages from Fedora Extras: the
advantage here is that users can plug into the existing system for yum,
so there's no need to work on security updates, plus users get 100%
compatibility with Fedora. It would be easy to address common
complaints about Fedora such as "bloat" (Two desktop environments, who
knows how many GB of internationalization files), packages that make it
difficult to install your own software (OpenOffice). It might be a bit
silly, but I'm still missing 'fortune' and the games package that came
with Slackware.
In the age of BitTorrent, the task of distributing the new
distribution would be easy as well: set up a tracker and a few seeds
with good connectivity, and the problem is solved.
(Actually, that scares me a little -- what if somebody spins a
'black hat linux' with a bad ssh that misrepresents itself as FC and
spreads the .torrent file around the net?)
This kind of project would make Extras more relevant: people who
want to put packages in alternative distributions would have a
motivation to get packages into Extras so they can benefit from the
update network.
Longer-term, it might be interesting to do more of a fork: but the
further you diverge from Fedora the more problems you have. For
instance, people who want to play mp3's might like a distribution that
has no media players and no dependencies on media players -- they can
install what they like the way they like it. Trouble is that they might
use yum to install some other packages that have dependencies on media
players and all hell breaks loose. Open Office creates similar
problems: removing OO gives us more flexibility with the web browser,
but if someone tries to install OO, it either aborts or the web browser
gets borked.
One answer is to maintain a parallel tree of rpm files (lots of
work, lots of resources), another answer is to make yum (perhaps a
forked yum) smart enough to 'overlay' one repository on another: 'Hard
Core' might balk at an attempt to install OO from Fedora Core, or
overlay it with an OO that has fewer dependencies on it's environment.
------
Many of us can imagine our own personal perfect Fedora-derived
distribution, but really the challenge is to think of a coherent
mission for an alternative distribution (or series of alternative
distributions) that would be compelling to enough people that it could
get some momentum. Any ideas?

gcalc broken Bug[161710]

Just curious if anyone is looking into this bug. It has been going on
for quite some time and is kind of nasty. I took a stab at trying to
track it down, but it is beyond me.
