Fedora Core 3 test 2 schedule change
by Elliot Lee
Hi all,
The plan is changing a bit and the intention right now is to release
FC3test2 to the public on September 20.
There are too many niggling issues remaining in the test2 candidate trees.
firstboot still isn't quite there, and hardware detection & X seem to have
a few issues. Please continue to look at
http://fedora.linux.duke.edu/FC3-re0908.0/ and find other problems that
must be fixed for the test release. Issues that must be fixed generally
are ones that prevent most users from installing & setting up a running
system, or bad app crashes. Please use
http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/ to report issues so the developers
can keep things straight. :)
Best,
-- Elliot

- Remove hard coded dependancy on Glide3 from xorg-x11 package, as the tdfx
DRI driver has used dlopen() with Glide3 since XFree86 4.2.1 or so, and no
longer has a build time or runtime dependancy on Glide3 being present. If
Glide3 is present, DRI will work (theoretically), but if it is not present,
the tdfx driver should still function correctly, so we can get rid of this
dependancy now, as we are removing Glide3 from some of our OS products.

Another FC3test2 candidate tree
by Elliot Lee
The previous bug reports on the re0903.0 tree were very helpful -
here's another one to chew on:
http://fedora.linux.duke.edu/FC3-re0908.0/
(As before, I just started syncing it, so it will be a while. Please
make sure that any .iso's you download are dated today 2004-09-08 - the
old ones in place there are from yesterday and are known-broken.)
Please see how it installs/runs if you get a chance.

raidtools and MAKEDEV
by Steve G
Hi,
I was starting to test some of the newer MAKEDEV, udev, hal stuff and ran into
something that I don't remember anyone mentioning. Raidtools now dies on
installation:
93:procmail ########################################### [ 42%]
94:raidtools ########################################### [ 42%]
/var/tmp/rpm-tmp.42736: line 2: ./MAKEDEV: No such file or directory
error: %post(raidtools-1.00.3-8) scriptlet failed, exit status 127
95:rootfiles ########################################### [ 42%]
96:slocate
Looking at the raidtools spec file:
%post
cd /dev
./MAKEDEV -m 16 md
So I change raidtools to use /sbin/MAKEDEV and then it spews errors:
MAKEDEV: /dev/md0: unable to reset file creation context
MAKEDEV: /dev/md1: unable to reset file creation context
and this continues for all 16 devices. (I saw a new parameter in today's rawhide
report to suppress this kind of thing.) The installation is successful, though.
Does anyone else see raidtools die like this or is it just my setup and anaconda
takes care of these details? Do you want this in bugzilla? raidtools hasn't been
updated for a long time.
Thanks,
-Steve Grubb

floppy install
by Lonnie Cumberland
Hello All,
I am starting to get a small feel for the FC2 Linux os with many
differences from my old Mandrake 10.0 distro and I must say that I like
what I have seen so far. In as much, I will be re-formatting my machine
to remove the MDK and put in the FC2 code.
I have seen that I can use a boot.iso burned onto a cdrom to install
Fedora, but I was wondering what provisions were there for booting from
a floppy and then installing over the net, NFS, hard drive, http, etc... ?
Seems that if FC2 only supports bootable CDROM systems then it would be
hard to place on some older machines or did I miss something?
Thanks All and have a good day,
Lonnie

rpm --redhat-requires, rpm --redhat-provides
by seth vidal
Hi Everyone,
I don't want a flamewar, just opinions.
Are there a lot of people who use the two commands listed in the subject
very often? I ask b/c there has been some discussion of minimizing the
number of copies of the package metadata from the installation.
comps.rpm and rpmdb-fedora take up considerable space and now would be a
good time to discuss removing them for FC4.
if yum or some other command line tool were to be able to return the
same data from the xml metadata, instead of the comps or rpmdb-fedora,
would people be willing to use those?
Thanks

Dependency reciprocity : real world problem with httpd and httpd-suexec
by Matthias Saou
Hi,
I've ran into a real problem where package A requires B, and B requires A :
The current httpd and httpd-suexec packages from FC Development. I've just
installed FC Test from the latest ISOs, a minimal system, then did "yum
install httpd" from there. The problem is that during the transaction,
httpd-suexec (which got pulled in as a dependency) got installed first,
outputting the message "apache group doesn't exist, using root"... BAD!
Yes, the suexec binary is now sgid root on that system instead of sgid
apache.
Now... I'm posting here before bugzilla'ing this since I'd like to know
what the general opinion is regarding packages requiring some of their own
sub-packages like this. I really think it should be avoided since there are
some side-effects like this one that can arise. Furthermore, I don't get
why httpd-suexec nor php-mbstring (as another example) got split off... the
main purpose I can see for such cases is for the original package to be
overridden by another one providing the same functionality, like the X Mesa
libraries.
