2.6.5-1.315 + kudzu -- constantly re-detecting my Ethernet card
by Mary Ellen Foster
Over the weekend, I decided to try installing the 2.6.5-1.315 kernel (from
http://people.redhat.com/arjanv/2.6/) on my laptop, which is currently
running a fully-updated FC1.
There were the normal 2.6 teething problems -- USB
modules, /dev/input/mice, that sort of thing -- but things seem to be much
better than the last time I tried a 2.6 kernel (e.g., no more kernel
panics from my external USB sound card).
One continuing annoyance is that kudzu persists in detecting my Ethernet
card (RealTek somethingorother; driver is 8139too) as a new one, and
configuring it as "eth2" (eth0 is the real configuration of my card; eth1
is my wireless PCMCIA card). I found a thread from February that mentioned
a similar issue, but I didn't see any resolution. Should I just disable
kudzu and ignore the problem for now?
Here's the root of the previous thread:

Forward looking to FC2 final and SELinux
by Jesse Keating
Is the end strategy still to put out FC2 with SELinux enabled/enforcing?
I'm struggling with finding good reasons to have SELinux enforcing by
default on a final release. I'd like to see SELinux at the most in
permissive mode, so that things are still labeled, but SELinux is
preventing the system from working. With the amount of 3rd party
software people usually add to their systems, people will end up
spending more time fighting SELinux (or disabling it themselves) than
actually using the system.
While SELinux is very cool, and very usefull in corner cases of edge
servers, it's not very cool for workstations, desktops, general
servers, etc... During the beta phase it's somewhat cool to have it
enabled to touch on a VERY large range of hardware/systems, but it's
turning people away from the OS. Test2 felt extremely alphaish, and
with only one more test release in the works, people are beginning to
seriously doubt the quality of Fedora Core. FC2 being the first FC
release to be developed entirely under the "open" policy of the Fedora
project, it would be nice for it to be solid, and not a steaming pile,
as it will set the tone for all future FC releases.
In short, I'd urge strongly to have SELinux turned off for the final
release, and perhaps even for Test3. Having it there is extremely cool
for those that will need/want it. Forcing it upon the rest of the
world is not wise IMHO.
The option for SELinux should continue to be exposed during the install
(and kickstarts), but default to off. Those that know what SELinux is,
and are capable of managing policies or reporting problems will be able
to enable it, and click through a big popup warning about SELinux.
Those users who don't know should be scared off by the popup if they
make the mouse click to enable SELinux. It goes with the rest of the
theme of the distribution. Powerusers to are capable of dealing with
certain features can enable those features themselves. Non-power users
should not be forced to learn about something just to be able to turn
it off or repair their system.

Package Naming Guidlines
by Toshio Kuratomi
Hi all,
I have some comments on DistTags in the Naming Guidelines. Regarding
both existing Documentation on fedora.us and Warren's proposed
guidelines.
Reference link:
http://www.fedora.us/wiki/PackageNamingGuidelines
_Documentation:
* Neither Warren's Proposal or the fedora.us Naming Guidelines mention
that the disttag is generated by the buildsystem on fedora.us. I'd like
to add the following near the top of the section:
Note: If you are building packages for fedora.us, you should not
manually add a %{disttag} to the spec files. The buildsystem (and mach,
on which it is based) automatically appends the proper %{disttag} when
the package is built for the target platform. Instead, be sure to
mention the correct distributions to build for in the package submission
KEYWORDS field.
* Fedora.us is using a slightly older verion of the Guidelines than
Warren's October proposal to this list. I would like to add the
following table modified slightly from Warren's October proposal:
Dist Tag for Normal Packages:
Dist Tag for Normal Packages:
0.fdr.%{X}.%{disttag}
Where %{X} is the vepoch and %{disttag} is a distribution tag from the
following table:
rh73 Red Hat Linux 7.3 [*]
rh80 Red Hat Linux 8 [*]
rh90 Red Hat Linux 9 [*]
1 Fedora Core 1
1.93 Fedora Core 1.93 Beta
1.94 Fedora Core 1.94 beta
2 Fedora Core 2
[*] These %{disttags} will be changed when fedora.us is merged into
Fedora Extras. The new numbering scheme is 0.7.3, 0.8, and 0.9
respectively.
* I'd like to remove the "Dist Tag for Red Hat Linux Betas" section as
it appears to me that we are using the new numbering scheme for the
Fedora Core Betas and there are no packages in the repository for the
RHL Betas.
_Guidelines:
* I don't like the period between release tag and %{disttag} because it
doesn't really serve its purpose as a separator (The period gets lost in
the clutter of other periods before and after it.) The other
traditional separator character in files '-' is already allocated in
RPMs. So how about using a multi-character separator like '.0'?
foobar-0.1-1.00.7.3.src.rpm For RH7.3
foobar-0.1-1.00.9.src.rpm For RH9
foobar-0.1-1.01.src.rpm For FC1
foobar-0.1-1.01.94.src.rpm For FC Beta 1.94
foobar-0.1-1.010.src.rpm For FC10
I would argue that this is not as ugly as '_', more readable than
foobar-0.1-1.1.94.src.rpm, and still works for corner cases.

boot floppy w/ dos and loadlin?
by Michael A. Peters
Would it be possible to create an install boot floppy for fedora using
FreeDOS in combination with loadlin?
This could potentially make Fedora installable if the bootable CD issue
ever crops up again (is that fixed yet?) or any other scenario where the
cdrom drive is not bootable.
I'm not very familiar with DOS or loadlin - but it seems like a
possibility that would work around the kernel being too big for a
floppy.

5.
I plan to package some extra dictionaries for OpenOffice.org. Another
package I wish to add is SquidGuard (URL filter for Squid), which I have
patched so it works with DB 4.2 (The latest version which is a few years
old only works with 4.0).
I don't mind doing QA, but I need to get a bit more familiar with how
things work first!
6.
I've done quite a bit of programming in languages including C, Java,
C++, PHP, Perl. I LOVE shell scripting. I'm a C programmer at heart.
I only know the basics of RPM, but I'm reading the docs at the moment.
I wrote a few patches which went into the (now obsolete) Jabber 1.4.2
server. I also wrote a simple php front end for searching MARC format
library databases (marcsearch.sourceforge.net), which is being used by a
few libraries around the world as a cheap (and superior) alternative to
a $3000 commercial product. I've filed many (hopefully useful) bugs on
various bugzilla's around the place, often with patches/solutions.
Why should you trust me??? You probably shouldn't (at first).

qa-assistant-0.2
by Toshio Kuratomi
Greetings all Fedora QA'ers!
The second release of QA Assistant, the GNOME-Python Checklist for
Fedora QA'ing is here. Major elements of this update:
* Descriptions of checklist items in tooltips. Just hover over a
line in the checklist for half a second and a description of the
item and possible ways to verify it will appear.
* File Selection Dialogs so you can start an SRPM review from within
the application
* Review's now use '*' for bullets rather than '-' to be more GPG
friendly.
* Optionrenderer speedups and cosmetic enhancements so it looks much
more like a combo box.
* Implement rpm2cpio in python (Thanks to Ville Skyttä) -- the only
system call remaining in qa-assistant is one to cpio.
Tarballs are available here:
http://www.tiki-lounge.com/~toshio/software/qa-assistant/qa-assistant-0.2...
Download and untar. Then run ./qa-assistant directly from the untarred
directory. Select 'File => New => From SRPM' from the menu and open up
any SRPM on your system. QA Assistant will open a new Fedora Checklist
on the SRPM for your QA'ing pleasure.
Developers:
subversion repository available from:
