up2date via local dir
by Mike Chambers
Is anyone else having any problems running up2date via GUI against a
local directory?
The problem seems to be once up2date pulls in the packages to choose
what you want to upgrade, it freezes before listing the packages.
I also have a server that runs auto up2date and it fails via command
line as well.
Theses are the last couple of versions that have hit rawhide that are
causing the problems.

Yet another wish list
by Leonard den Ottolander
Hi,
I would like to see following additions/changes to the distro:
1) libmhash
2) libmcrypt
3) (mcrypt)
4) php built with --with-mcrypt and --with-mhash
5) (php with extra dbase functions)
6) mc built with support for larger syntax files
7) mc with included complete php.syntax file
Addenda:
1) a libmhash rpm is available at
http://www.ottolander.nl/opensource/mhash/libmhash.html . The rpms
available there currently lack a static library (libmhash.a). I will fix
this soon (currently have a test version that needs verifying against
the php build).
The mhash rpm by Michael Schwendt available at fedora US
(http://www.fedora.us/pkglists/1/stable/mhash-0.8.18-0.fdr.1.1.src.rpm.html) could be used instead, but I would suggest two changes. It lacks libmhash.la, which iiac is needed for dynamic linking. Also I would suggest to use the name libmhash instead of mhash, and reserve the name mhash for a package containing a command line tool, in analogy to libmcrypt and mcrypt.
(Also see https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=104211)
2) a libmcrypt rpm is available at
http://www.ottolander.nl/opensource/mcrypt/mcrypt.html . (No bugzilla
RFE entry yet.)
3) an mcrypt rpm is available at the same location as 2) (bottom of the
page).
4) To enable mhash and mcrypt support in php change the spec file as
follows:

apxs.
(note the line wrap)
(Also see https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=103735,
no request for mcrypt in php bugzillad yet.)
5) php_dbase.patch available at
http://www.ottolander.nl/opensource/dbase2mysql/dbase2mysql.html . This
patch adds some basic dbase functions for which hooks are already
available in the code. Also submitted upstream, but I haven't heard
anything for weeks...
6) mc currently crashes on import of syntax files that are too large
(https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=112644).
Increasing MAX_WORDS_PER_CONTEXT to a value of 4096 suffices to import
the syntax file mentioned in 7):

7) A complete(?) php syntax file can be found at

Usb memory sticks
by Chadley Wilson
Hi Again.
The second thing I need help with is USB memory sticks.
Mounting the device from shell is fine for me but I need to learn how to
write an auto-mount script, for the end-users.
So just as you will insert a cdrom and an icon appears on your desktop,
I would like the same for USB mem-stick with one exception. Instead of
eject it must unmount for safe removal of the device.
does anyone have any ideas or perhaps a beta that I can test drive for
you?
Many thanks for any responses

Patch for Keyspan USB-serial adapter...
by Randy Zagar
I have been testing Fedora core/1 on a Dell Inspiron 5100 for the past
few weeks, and most things have gone well. Recently, however, I tried
using a keyspan usb-to-serial adapter, because the Inspiron 5100 has no
serial ports, and found that the current 2.4.22-1.2249.nptl kernel
doesn't completely support this device.
The attached patch files include changes to the kernel-2.4.spec file and
a patch file from the vendor:
http://www.keyspan.com/support/linux/files/currentversion/patch/
With these changes the kernel recognizes the device, uploads the
firmware, and registers the new serial port as /dev/ttyUSB0.
Just my $0.02,

Hi I was wondering if I could help with some things
I'd like to get the following packaged myself and contribute them to the
project;
Cyrus-IMAPd recent stable
OpenLDAP with SASLauth
Bootsplash <-- Dunno if people will want this, I like it. It can
hide everything.
Firewall Of my own design easy to use and very configurable I
sell this, so I'll be changing a few things for a free release.
mod_auth_pam httpd pam authentication support
...and various other packages which I will build for convenience.
Thanks

help: need a upstream mirror host
by nathan r. hruby
Hi,
I'm trying to get access from the primary source for Fedora for my campus
so we can host a local mirror for ourselves and have timely updates.
To try to make that happen I've emailed ftp(a)redhat.com, submitted the
mirror app back, and tried to subscribe to mirror-list and mirror-list-d
several times and still haven't heard a response back for anyone,
automated or otherwise.
So, with FC2 going beta next week, would anyone (preferably on I2) be
willing to be an rsync host for me and my campus for Fedora? Or, if
anyone has the office telephone number of whomever is responsible for
dealing with fedora mirror sites, I'll take that too :)
Really folks, it shouldn't be this hard!

Package Request: Gretools vocabulary builder
by Arvind Narayanan
Name: gretools
Version: 1.2.1
License: GPL
Language: Python
Website: http://theory.cs.iitm.ernet.in/~arvindn/gretools/
Actively Maintained?: yes
Author Contacted and Approved?: yes (I'm the lead developer)
Packages exist?: yes (http://theory.cs.iitm.ernet.in/~arvindn/gretools/1.2/)
Description:
Gretools is a vocabulary building tool for GNOME. It consists of a
synonym quiz, a word guessing game and a word browser. It automatically
remembers the words you had difficulty with and lets you revise them. You
can set a filter to restrict the space of words to practice on.
Reasons for requesting:
Small size, works well, integrates well with GNOME, intuitive UI, really
useful for preparing for word tests.
Rough Software Requirements (all available in Fedora Core 1):
python >= 2.2
gnome-python2 >= 1.99
gnome-python2-gconf >= 1.99
pyorbit >= 1.99
pygtk2 >= 1.99
pygtk2-libglade >= 1.99
Target: Core
Reason: Useful to a wide audience, nice complement to KDE edutainment
Cheers,
Arvind

XFree86 4.3.0
by Casey James Price
I'm trying to build an rpm of XFree86 version 4.3.0, and a bit curious on
how to go about doing it. I noticed the install process for XFree is a bit
different, calling for a make World. So, I'm basically wondering if anyone
has a good example or working spec file they would want to show me.
Thanks,

perl and multilib considerations?
by Warren Togami
Requires: perl >= 2:5.8.2
spamassassin.spec contains this, which is problematic because it must
change every time perl is upgraded. The resulting SRPM needs to be
modified if you rebuild it on older distributions too. Not a totally
serious problem, but annoying and consumes developer time on a
reoccuring basis.
Requires: %(perl -le 'use Config; print $Config{archlibexp}')
Currently xchat.spec has this line in an attempt to avoid this problem.
x86 and x86_64 FC1 outputs this result from that command:
/usr/lib/perl5/5.8.1/i386-linux-thread-multi
/usr/lib64/perl5/5.8.1/x86_64-linux-thread-multi
I am thinking if this xchat.spec method of requiring the right version
of perl that was in the buildsystem during rpmbuild time can safely be
used universally. Are there any cases where we will need to ship both
32bit and 64bit perl in a distribution in order to satisfy the
dependency of existing 32bit programs that may link to perllib?
There should be no problem with 32bit apps executing /usr/bin/perl
directly since it should be functionally equivalent to what it expects.
Also I am thinking this is not a problem because the above perl
command creates a directory dependency that should avoid Requiring the
wrong perl arch, but I want to be sure I am not overlooking anything.
Requires: %(perl -le 'use Config; print $Config{archlibexp}')
Does this spec line fail in any cases you can think of?
Warren Togami
wtogami(a)redhat.com
p.s.
BuildRequires: %(perl -le 'use Config; print $Config{archlibexp}')
On a related note, one might be tempted to use this in spec files too,
but think about it... perl would not be installed in order to output the
directory name necessary to implicate itself for BuildRequires. =)
BuildRequires: perl
Instead this is proper in all cases.
