The synaptics package wont compile with the XFree86-SDK. Paul Nasrat has worked on this but never sent me a patch that cleanly applies to the current Fedora rpm, and cleanly compiles. (the last patch applied but didn't compile).
It's not a priority to me, so I haven't looked into fixing it, however if Paul or someone else wants to fix it and send me via bugzilla, the proper patch that allows the synaptics rpm to compile using the XFree86-SDK, having *tested* the patch with XFree86 src.rpm first, and compiled the synaptics driver against it, I'd be glad to add it to FC2.
But it _is_ a priority for me. FC2 will be quite a pain to use if that driver isn't working. I suspect many laptops will suffer from the same problem.
I actually tried upgrading to rawhide's Linux 2.6.1 because I miss software suspend terribly (I have none ATM because this laptop only does ACPI and swsusp is really hard to merge with FC's 2.4.22), but as soon as I upgraded XFree86 (hoping it had the synaptics updated driver) I had to roll back to FC1's Linux since the mouse was very close to unusable.
