Upcoming Fedora Test Days ... DeviceKit and XFCE
by James Laska
Greetings,
With Fedora 11 Beta looming [1], I'd like to invite folks to help test
several upcoming release Features.
* DeviceKit [2] - Tuesday, March 17, 2009
* XFCE-4.6 [3] - Thursday, March 19, 2009
= DeviceKit =
Ever notice how the graphical disk management functionality present
during a Fedora installation is not available after you've installed
your system?
<Enter DeviceKit on stage left>
DeviceKit adds a graphical disk management utility (provided by
gnome-disk-utility) and provides the backend for gnome-power-manager.
If you have some time to spare, and removable media or USB/fireware
attached storage ... I invite you to join #fedora-qa this Tuesday, March
17, 2009 to help make sure your unique hardware works when Fedora 11 is
released.
Developers Tomas Bzatek and Matthias Clasen, along with testers Radek
Biba and Ondrej Hudlicky, will help guide test efforts and analyze
failures. Additional information and test cases are landing in
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/QA/Test_Days/2009-03-17.
= XFCE-4.6 =
Already a seasoned XFCE user? Or, tired of the same old desktop and
looking for something different? Fedora 11 will feature XFCE-4.6 which
adds a number of improvements [4] including a redesigned configuration
manager and power management integration.
XFCE maintainer Kevin Fenzi and our very own Adam Williamson are looking
for your input to help craft test cases [5] and ensure a smooth
transition to the latest upstream release. Come share your findings
this Thursday, March 19 in #fedora-qa.
Stay tuned to https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/QA/Test_Days/2009-03-19 for
more information.
Thanks,
James

* John5342
* JStizzle
* iarlyy
* imbrius
* mprice
* beland
* mcepl
* adamw
* tk009
== Meeting Summary & Action Items ==
It was great to see a lot of new BugZappers memebers at the meeting
today. Thank you for taking the time to attend.
* Greasemonkey Script - The All-in-One script isn't ready for
deployment. Until then, we will continue to use the BugZappers "triage
buttons" greasemonkey script found here:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/Tools, and the BugZappers
signature script found here:
http://mcepl.fedorapeople.org/scripts/greasemonkey/add_bugzappers_signatu...
You can test the signature script by posting a comment to this bug
here: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=485962
* Wiki Updating - The updating of the BugZappers wiki space will begin
with the BugZappers front page and a page merging the ActiveTriagers and
Components pages.
Here are two drafts for review of the modified front page. Please feel
free to comment on or edit either.
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/User:Beland/BugZappers
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/User:Tk009/bugzappers
beland will be creating a draft page merging the information from the
ActiveTriagers and components pages. Once complete he will email the
link to the mailing-list for review.
* (SOP) Standard Operating Procedures - General discussion began on
creation of SOP's for the BugZappers, and that they should be created
concurrently with the wiki update. Then focused on SOP for joining/new
members of the BugZappers. Specifically the "introduction e-mail". No
decission was reached during the meeting regarding procedure.
=== Action Items ===
* Unassigned - Create a draft of SOP for new BugZappers members. -
Document requirements have yet to be defined.
* Unassigned - Create a draft for a greasemonkey wiki page - This would
be to merge all existing and scattered BugZappers greasemoneky
information in to one page.
* Beland - Create a draft wiki page merging the information from
ActiveTriagers page here:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/ActiveTriagers and Components
page here: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/components.
* Tk009 - Create new or edit the existing BugWorkFlow.png to correct
conflicting/confusing information regarding the flow from the "NEEDINFO"
flag.

Fedroa 10 Wedges File System under heavy I/O Load
by Chuck Forsberg WA7KGX
From time to time I back up data from /u, /y, and /var onto
an external IDE HD attached with a USB interface as /dev/sde1.
The command used is: cd /; find u y var -print | cpio -pmd /b
This has worked well until recently.
Now Fedora "wedges" the /u file system at some time during this
backup process, which takes about three hours. If /u doesn't
wedge before the backup finished with /u, the backup runs
to completion.
Strangely enough, even when /u is wedged, other file systems
on the same drive typically work normally. Commands such
as sync and ps -ef wedge, but df does not.
Any ideas what to look for??

I saw this article that seems relevant to this discussion
a few months back:
http://www.linux.com/feature/155922
It talks about a "next generation" package manager called
Nix that claims to solve this kind of problem I think:
http://nixos.org/
Whether nix is for real or not, from a naive user's
perspective it sure seems like it should be possible
to solve this problem. It basically seems like what svn
or other version control systems already do. They
remember changes (and for the case of text files,
they store only differences. For binaries it should
also be possible to efficiently store changes... in
fact I seem to remember a new update feature that
will do something like that).

Intel video testing: It worked for a bit...
by Leon Stringer
Hi,
After the many comments and suggestions following my post last week I
tried F11A on my Intel D845GERG2-based system.
Anaconda didn't work with the default driver (same bug as #470371 in
F10) but worked fine with the Basic Video Driver option.
First boot, black screen but setting Option "NoAccel" "true" fixed that
(using the VESA driver).
So I could get into X, set up my Wi-Fi card and download the updates.
Now it doesn't work again!
With no X, I have no Wi-Fi so I tried manually updating some packages
from a mirror and now things are looking a bit strange, I've lost the
text-based progress bar at the start.
So, have I done anything wrong by applying these?

Bio (blocked i/o) 2 jack is a library for enabling easy porting of blocked
io(OSS/ALSA) applications to the jack sound server. This library allows the
person porting the code to simply replace the calls into OSS/ALSA with calls
into interface functions of this library. The library buffers a small amount of
audio data and takes care of the rest of the jack implementation including the
linked list of audio data buffers and the jack callback.
