Re: More on high i/o load wedging Fedora 10
by Chuck Forsberg WA7KGX
I regret not providing the output of sysrq-w when Linux was wedged.
About the time I figured out that sysrq-w was a magic key combination
and not an undocumented command, I had updated to a Rawhide
kernel and the problem went away.
We've come a long way from Version 7 Unix when one could hope
to get their hands around the kernel without quitting their day job.
That should be kept in mind when asking for the output of arcane
procedures.

where is a description of the custom spins?
by Robert P. J. Day
i'm interested in the Fedora-11-Alpha-i686-Live-Dev.torrent spin
(assuming it's targeted at developers), but i don't see any
description of what i might find in that spin. is there a details
page somewhere?

clock riddle
by Michal Jaegermann
If you would have a Linux system where in a default configuration
everybody with a desktop session would be able to modify at will such
"insignificant" system settings like values of a hardware clock and
a system clock, not mentioning such details like global changes to
a configured timezone, then would you think that this is:
- how it should be
- a minor boo-boo
- somewhat troublesome
- or a really serious problem of a system integrity with security
consequence too (messed up logs but not only)?
Now knowing that various programs will be seriously affected by
sudden changes in clock various, and ntpd is very careful when doing
clock adjustments, would you think that the situation described in
the previous paragraph is something which does not happen on Fedora
or maybe it does?

More on high i/o load wedging Fedora 10
by Chuck Forsberg WA7KGX
I reformatted the backup drive with ext2 to see if that made any
difference. Fedora still wedged during the backup, twice.
The first time it wedged when I was switching screens and
the keyboard went completely dead. No response to anything,
not even a blink for Caps Lock. No response to Power button
either.
The second time Fedora wedged I was able to execute some
commands as long as I didn't reference the /u file system
in any way. An ll /tmp command given with the shell in
/u printed the total and then wedged. The identical command
given from /tmp worked normally. The only command that
referenced the /u file system in any way that worked was df.
During this time the backup from /y to /b was proceeding
normally. I was able to suspend the backup with Ctrl-Z.
I waited for disk activity to die down. I gave a sync command
detached; it did not complete. The backup responded to a
"fg" command to restart.
Note that /y and root were still working normally despite
being on the same hard drive as the wedged /u file system.
I then issued a reboot command. It stalled after printing
the first line of its usual sequence.
[caf@omen ~]$ uname -a
Linux omen.com 2.6.27.19-170.2.35.fc10.x86_64 #1 SMP Mon Feb 23 13:00:23
EST 2009 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
After a hardware reset I mounted the backup drive -o sync.
The backup has been proceeding for the last six or so hours
at a snail's pace, but it has not wedged the system. The
backup drive is seeking its heart out! A full backup of
/u /y and /var normally completes in a few hours but
this will take at least an order of magnitude longer, with
much more strain on the physical drive. This is not
a useful solution.

BugZappers: Introduction Email SOP draft
by TK009
Here is the draft of the introduction email SOP for review.
Some questions I have are-
Where will this page (and future SOP pages) live on the wiki?
What is the best way to inform applying/new Bugzappers about this SOP,
add something to the 'joining' page?
== Introduction ==
This Document defines the 'Introduction Email' procedure necessary for
induction in the "fedorabugs" group as a member of the BugZappers
(Fedora Triage Team).
== Contact Information ==
Owner: Fedora BugZappers
Contact: #fedora-bugzappers
Purpose: Define the process for granting "fedorabugs" group to bug triagers.
== History ==
BugZappers Introduction Email Procedures
Version:1.0
Effective Date: 2009-03-17
== Objective ==
New applicants to the BugZappers are required to send an introduction
email to fedora-test-list as an introduction and a request to be added
to the 'fedorabugs' group.
== Procedure ==
* If you have not already done so, subscribe to fedora-test-list.
* Draft an email with the subject: New BugZapper Introduction. Include
an introduction (personal information not required) and your request to
join the 'fedorabugs' group.
* Send the email to the fedora-test-list.

[Test-list] Think its a bug, please test it and confirm
by Ankur Sinha
hi,
I'm running a Fedora System. In order to test alphas etc, I install them
to a trial partition on my Segate external harddrive. I add them to my
existing grub and boot into them. The external harddrive thus has a
partition "/". When i mount this partition on my normal system, run
gnome-system-monitor , and go to the disk usage tab, the system monitor
crashes..
If i unmount this partition, system monitor works fine.
this is the output i get from the terminal when it crashes :
[Ankur@Ankur ~]$ gnome-system-monitor
(gnome-system-monitor:5342): GLib-GObject-WARNING **:
IA__g_object_get_valist: property `name' of object class `GThemedIcon'
is not readable
terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::logic_error'
what(): basic_string::_S_construct NULL not valid
I think its a bug, can someone please try this out (make a partition
as / , mount it and run gnome-system-monitor > disk usage) and confirm.
where do i report this ? at bugzilla.redhat.com or is there a separate
one for gnome ?
regards,
Ankur
PS : please ignore the earlier mail
