netbeans broken on updated Fedora 9
by Per Bothner
NetBeans (see netbeans.org) version 6.1 (but other versions also fail)
recently stopped working in any useful way after recently updating
Fedora 9. It works in Fedora 8, when using the identical
copy of NetBeans and JDK. This suggests either a Gnome/X11/??? bug,
or that JDK is depending on unspecified Gnome/X11/??? behavior.
I'm only seeing this in NetBeans; OTOH I don't use many other
graphical Java applications.
The bug is that redisplay of source editor windows is bad.
I make a change, scroll, or just click and it will most of the
time repaint wrong, showing both the re-painted text and a copy
of some other part of the screen, on top of each other. This
makes NetBeans on F9 practically unusable
When I use OpenJDK (as in /home/bothner/Java/netbeans-6.1/bin/netbeans
--jdkhome /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-openjdk) I got no error message.
If I use jdk1.6.0_05 I do get some error messages in the terminal
window. On start-up I get:
Locking assertion failure. Backtrace:
#0 /usr/lib/libxcb-xlib.so.0 [0xc92767]
#1 /usr/lib/libxcb-xlib.so.0(xcb_xlib_unlock+0x31) [0xc92831]
#2 /usr/lib/libX11.so.6(_XReply+0x244) [0xbb8f64]
#3 /opt/jdk1.6.0_05/jre/lib/i386/xawt/libmawt.so [0xb4b508ce]
#4 /opt/jdk1.6.0_05/jre/lib/i386/xawt/libmawt.so [0xb4b2d067]
#5 /opt/jdk1.6.0_05/jre/lib/i386/xawt/libmawt.so [0xb4b2d318]
#6
/opt/jdk1.6.0_05/jre/lib/i386/xawt/libmawt.so(Java_sun_awt_X11GraphicsEnvironment_initDisplay+0x2f)
[0xb4b2d61f]
...
and on each re-display I get one or more of:
(<unknown>:3174): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_paint_box: assertion
`style->depth == gdk_drawable_get_depth (window)' failed
If I use JDK 5 it's even worse: The "status" messages in the
start-up window are all written on top of each other, and when
the main window is up it is blank.
This is on a Dell Inspiron E1405 on an Intel Corporation Mobile
945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller rev 3.
I saw something similar early in Fedora 9 beta, but the problem
went away, but then it recently returned.
I can report this in BugZilla, but this seems to be a recent
regression, so it seems worthwhile mentioning it here.

Crashing Fedora with Wine
by Chuck Forsberg WA7KGX
I have crashed Fedora 8 (up to date withyum) on an AMD 6000
by doing unusual things with Wine.
Using a VNC remote deskop, "wine -V" (or was it "wine -v") nailed
Fedora.
Again using a VNC remote desktop, I successfully ran W6ELProp.exe
with the command "wine W6ELProp.exe" . After using the propagation
program successfully, I set focus to the window from which I ran
Wine and hot Control-C to terminate Wine. This too nailed Fedora.
In the second instance it appeared that Fedora was still forwarding
internet traffic after it crashed. But everything else had stopped
and the console keyboard was dead. I have a picture of the
diagnostics on the console screen available.
The same situation running on an Intel Core Duo doesn't seem
to cause any problems.

Installing Fedora on the Fit-PC
by Peter Robinson
Hi,
I have a Fit-PC (http://www.fit-pc.com/) that I'm trying to install
Fedora on to no real avail. Its similar specs to an olpc in that its
based on the same AMD geode cpu and it comes installed with Ubuntu.
I've tried a couple of different variations of USB key install to no
avail. I can't seem to get it past the boot loader stage. Has anyone
else had any luck installing Fedora on these devices?
Cheers,
Peter

I use fedora 8.
I have succesfull used openwatcom under wine in the past (wine 0.96 or
around). Under wine 1.0 rc3, the openwatcom IDE crashes (and, in
following, the whole linux). My PC is an Phenom 9750 on a Gigabyte
GA-MA79X-DS4 motherboard. 32bit installation, 4GB ECC RAM. wmake
on command line runs good.
Any hints?

fedora 9 help with unknown symbols in kernel -- cap_capget cap_capset_set
by Skunk Worx
Hello,
I asked over on 'users' a few days ago and no help yet. I hope you don't
mind my repeating the question here.
We're a small company using some altera-based boards and our own driver
to control them.
Fedora 7 was working well, but we are getting some unknown symbols while
evaluating an upgrade to F9.
Any help, comments, suggestions are greatly appreciated.

John
code and issues :
struct sched_param param = {70};
kernel_cap_t effective, inheritable, permitted, all;
cap_set_full(all); // be sure we have enough permissions to call
// sched_setscheduler.
// probably only need CAP_SYS_NICE, but let's be
// "(un)safe"
// save old permissions
cap_capget(current,&effective, &inheritable, &permitted);
// setup permissions to do this
cap_capset_set(current,&all, &all, &all);
// setup realtime priority
ret=sched_setscheduler(current,SCHED_RR,¶m);
// restore permissions
cap_capset_set(current,&effective, &inheritable, &permitted);
used to be able to do this in f7 / 2.6.23 kernel, now we get:
WARNING: "cap_capset_set" [/usr/CSM/src/ONI/oni_driver/oni.ko] undefined!
WARNING: "cap_capget" [/usr/CSM/src/ONI/oni_driver/oni.ko] undefined!

oni: Unknown symbol cap_capset_set

FUDCON hackfest - Building a fedora test plan
by James Laska
Greetings fellow testers,
At the last FUDCON in Raleigh, NC, a group of folks got together to
discuss upcoming installation-related features and how we can prepare
for them. Many good ideas came up in the discussion (see
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/F9InstallationTesting), but the result
I'm most proud of was the Fedora 9 Installation test plan. The test
plan can be found at
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/QA/TestPlans/Fedora9Install. The plan
was used to organize a test strategy and capture the results of our
collaborative testing model.
The wiki proved to be a great mechanism for test {plan,case} content
creation. With the help of the fedora-test gang, several test plans
were developed and executed during the F9 campaign (e.g. PackageKit [1],
swfdec [2], LiveCD [3] and Installation [4]-[7]).
One of my interests for F10 is to help improve Fedora test coverage.
The F10 feature process is a great source for focus areas, but before
that begins I'd like some feedback on more general test areas.
What were some areas in F9 that you felt could have used earlier/more
attention? Some examples might include (but not limited to):
* LiveCD
* NetworkManager
* Installation (near and dear for me :) )
* Fedora Spins?
* Selinux?
* PackageKit
* Laptop issues?
I'll be hosting a hackfest session at FUDCON this week to discuss these
focus areas for F10. I'd be happy to come away with a handful of areas
to target for collaborative test plans/case development.
If you are attending FUDCON this week, I encourage you to sign up for
the Fedora Test Plan session and share your thoughts.
Thanks,
James
