Symptoms: Ogg files created from FLAC files using GStreamer contain stream errors, which either make them refuse to play in some devices or result in tiny interruptions during playback. Sometimes it isn't obvious that a file is corrupted, especially not if one doesn't listen to the file from start till end, e.g. when adding something to a personal music archive. That makes the bug even worse.

Monty has attached [working] patches to both tickets quickly after I had added a comment to various tickets spread throughout trackers at xiph.org and launchpad, but there seems to be a little bit of disagreement about whether other parts of GStreamer should be patched similarly.
Who can help with moving forward here especially wrt fixing Fedora?

So here's my way of maintaining the GStreamer packages in Fedora and the way I decide if I need to do something.
The TL;DR version: We track upstream.
Now on to the long version. It's based on these few things: 1) GStreamer does not have a stable branch Nothing like the GTK 3.x.y branches exists. Instead, all releases add new features, like GTK 3.x.0. 2) Fedora does not have a lot of expertise with GStreamer If you look at the people who write the code upstream, you don't find (m)any people that are active in Fedora. 3) GStreamer is a very intertwined codebase Changes in one part of GStreamer can influence a lot of other parts of GStreamer and result in unforseen side effects.
And from these things I concluded that I'd be careful in fiddling around with GStreamer. Basically, the rule is "don't touch anything unless it's affecting a large percentage of people". And I'm pretty happy with how it's turned out. We haven't introduced huge breakages, in particular not accidentally.
That said, what do I intend to do about your bug? I don;t think it's important enough to warrant any work from me. I'll just wait until the next release is out and that will hopefully fix it.

First of all, thanks for responding.

I cannot know that, but as the bug affects Fedora, I would appreciate a response in a ticket in Fedora's bug tracker.

SoundConverter in Fedora is based on GStreamer. If the bug can't be fixed in a timely manner, it may be necessary to blacklist FLAC->Ogg conversion in SoundConverter in order to protect users from creating damaged files. The bug has hit users with various distributions already.

Feel free to close the ticket as UPSTREAM then.

I'd apprecate feedback on https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=680809 Where (seemingly?) MP3 code search/install is broken in f15 too

Note that if you insert your reply below a "-- "signature delimiter, most mail clients will be unable to quote your reply because they truncate everything below a signature.
Anyway, there's also audio-convert-mod as a Fedora package. A graphical wizard-style app for converting audio files between many formats. Also written in Python and not using GStreamer. Not an immediate reason to drop SoundConverter, though.

thanks. i started doing that when somebody had trouble parsing the two phrases as a 'two part signature'.
