Hello guys,
My name is Eduard Lucena, some of you maybe know me, tons of you don't. I'm part of the marketing team and host of the Fedora Podcast.
I'm starting a SIG about i3 tiling window manager [1], with the final objective of create a remix that can finish up in an official spin. I have a ML you can join [2] and I'm hanging around on #fedora-i3 on IRC. I have a few ideas and I really would love to hear yours.

P.D. I want to create a FAS group, but it looks like it requires more than just having a FAS account. I'll sort out that as soon as possible.

What about sway? :)

Hi,
What about sway? :)
Sway have a SIG [1]. You can probably go there and join! :D

I was going to say this as well. Fedora already defaults to wayland, sway uses same configuration files as i3 it seems like a natural step.

Oh, indeed it does. So maybe join forces with them? There are many similarities between the two projects after all.

As the current maintainer of i3, I kinda have to join ;-)
As others have already mentioned in the thread: we should look into joining forces with the sway SIG (which I am also a member of). While a lot of the packages of interest are not really shared, the general similarity would allow us to save a lot of time when it comes to QA and the creation of a spin. Maybe we should merge into the tilling window manager SIG? (with a better name of course).
Cheers,
Dan

Depends - do you want us XMonad aficionados to show up? :)
(I'm only half joking here, I think. There are some common shared components I think - the suckless stuff, for instance - but also there should be a limit to how big a tent you want to have here.)
Thanks, --Robbie

Everyone is invited to join.

I still use too many X apps, Wayland still doesn't cover a lot of stuff.
Thanks, --Robbie
Thinking it more deeply, we can produce a lot of stuff and if Sway is so compatible with i3 as is stated, they should take benefit when all X-needs are covered and make the jump smoothly.

It's not a bad idea, but TBH, I still want to stay away from Wayland.

Well, we can join effort for packaging but produce different Spins, why not? wdyt?
Cheers,
Dan

It's nice to see more interest in i3! But I'm not sure that joining efforts is such a good idea. While sway and i3 may be very similar from a user perspective, they are not from a packager's perspective. Also, while you don't really care about sway, I don't have much interest in i3. So what exactly would a joined SIG do? All the work would be either towards i3 or sway, I don't see any synergetic effects of a joint SIG.
Kind regards, Till

Hello guys,
Hi.
Regarding to the minimum packages list pending on the Wiki, what I have always done to install i3wm without having to rely on other install mediums like Fedora Workstation Live DVD or any other Spin, is to use the Fedora-Everything-netinst-x86_64 from https://alt.fedoraproject.org/
This install media provides the option of a very minimal Fedora Install, you only have to mark the checkbox for Minimal or Custom Install, just that. No more than that. Then after the first boot up you will have to rely on a Wired Network interface connection or a Mobile USB Tethered Network to install the rest of the packages set which are the followings.
dnf -y group install networkmanager-submodules dnf -y group install core dnf -y install dial-up dnf -y group install fonts dnf -y group install guest-desktop-agents dnf -y group install hardware-support dnf -y group install multimedia dnf -y group install standard dnf -y group install base-x dnf -y group install input-methods dnf -y install fedora-icon-theme dnf -y install gnome-icon-theme dnf -y install gnome-icon-theme-extras dnf -y install i3 dnf -y install lightdm-gtk dnf -y install xdg-user-dirs
Then I just:
systemctl set-default graphical.target
And:
systemctl enable lightdm.service
Finally:
reboot.
I guess after all this, you can generate the list of packages with: dnf list installed > fedora_i3wm.txt
There are other issues to solve that we can discuss on the SIG Mailing list so we can achieve a MVP that suits the Spin philosophy.
Porfirio.
