He also suggested I take questions from the community - and I’m very happy to do that. I'd have to check what device is on the T480s (I don't have one myself). We have support from Synaptics for their 'Prometheus' device - if you do lsusb and confirm if its 06cb:00bd that will let you know.
I don't know if we'll be able to get support for other devices - for older platforms it's a bit of a battle so I've tended to focus on future devices first - our 2020 platforms will work and we have a requirement on vendors to support LVFS now which should help a lot (admittedly some go faster than others)
As a note - if you do have the 00bd device: firmware is on LVFS but it's in testing state (should be released really soon....). If you do enable lvfs-testing and do an update to get it installed then fingerprints should work with F32 (they did for my X1C7 and P1G2)

fwupdmgr enable-remote lvfs-testing fwupdmgr refresh fwupdmgr update fwupdmgr disable-remote lvfs-testing
Then go Settings > Users and enable fingerprint login. No more fumbling my login password while running late for standup without coffee! Yes! YES!!

The reason it took so long in testing is the firmware load is shared with Windows, so apparently the regression testing is taking a long time. I don't think Covid19 helped the situation any either...

Linux WWAN is hard for us to do correctly - but we are working on it. As you know the card is setup to work in PCIe mode and we haven't been able to get support for the vendor for that upstream. I've seen the changes posted to get it working on the USB bus - but our HW engineers don't support using it that way. There is also the problem of FCC regulations on many of our laptops. There is a lock required to make sure it's not tampered with and we have to be able to control the transmission power depending on if you're holding the laptop or not. There isn't any support in Linux for that yet.
For the X1C8 and probably our other 2020 platforms we're using a different part and 1) There will be kernel support for it implemented by the vendor 2) We have some engineers working on a DPR utility For full disclosure - the big sucky thing about the DPR utility is it has to be closed source as it has a closed source binary library from the vendor that we can't do anything about; So it won't be making it's way into the F32 image. But we do plan on making it available to customers as something they can install afterwards.
I'm genuinely open to discussions on alternatives - WWAN is not something I know lots about and the above is based on discussions with the HW/driver team. If there's an expert out there who wants to bend my ear on everything I've got wrong then let me know - though your argument has to be good enough to convince Lenovo lawyers that they won't get into trouble with the FCC.

Yeah - I'm 90% sure the fprint reader on X1C6 isn't supported but I'll double check. I hear the X1C8 works nicely 😝 (as does the X1C7)

I really want to duck this question because to be honest I spend all my time debugging issues which blurs your perception and I genuinely don't know the Dell line (I am sure they are great bits of kit). FWIW - I have an X1Carbon7 and it's very nice but I've also been known to swear at it (usually over the microphone). I've not managed to get my sticky hands on the X1C8 yet but from what I hear it's a pretty nice piece of hardware. I'm also quite fond of my AMD T495. Yeah, one of those is my daily driver.
My only real complaint has to do with the placement of the "PrtSc" key. I accidentally take several screenshots every day.. Otherwise it's a great machine to run Fedora on.

Agreed. I really want that key to be the menu key, with Fn to be PrtSc. (And overall, bring back the ThinkPad 25 keyboard, but that'll never happen.)

This answer helps me figure out where this is hopefully going and how much to hope for it to happen. While I'm fine with spending 2500€ of company money on a work machine, I'm rather hesitant to spend that kind of money on laptops for the kids :)

Same here. I just installed F32 Mate on a ThinkPad E595 and everything worked out of the box. The only hitch is that the xorg-x11-drv-amdgpu driver is not installed by default. My kid thinks it's a great update over the T420.
I've found that ThinkPads, going back to at least the A20, run Fedora or CentOS quite well.
Self-intro: I'm a progremmer and former sysadmin who's been running Linux since RH 7.1 (and Solaris, SunOS, and VMS before that). I build RPMs at work to make life easier for me and the sysadmins. I follow this list to know what's coming in future Fedora releases.

When running on GNU/Linux, due to overheating, my T480/T580 throttle up to 400 MHz (much more slower, than Pentium III from 1999).

Afraid I somewhat disagree. I think we should have done more earlier, but I don't think the root cause is ours.
I have no idea how the Dell XPS 13 solves this issue (or if it had the same in the first place) but my understanding of the problem is needing the adaptive support from DPTF to detect between lap and desk mode.
We have to meet some temperature safety requirements when the device is on lap. Because Linux doesn't have support for that the device defaults to the 'safer' power setting and you see thermal throttling (and lower performance than Windows). The new firmware does that lap/desk mode detection - and I'm told implementing that in the BIOS/EC firmware framework was non-trivial, It was done purely for Linux customers. The performance now for Linux users should be the same as for Windows users.
I think if DPTF had been open-sourced the thermal throttling would have been a non-issue. I can't comment on why that hasn't happen - I think really that's a question for Intel. Perhaps there are better solutions possible? They all get a bit vendor specific and I suspect would have been hard to upstream so firmware is a reasonable fix in my opinion.

First post here for me too. I'm chiming in both as a newly minted Red Hat guy and as a former Dell Linux person. :) I'm always a Linux person though and work with Mark as well as folks at other OEMs.

Afraid I somewhat disagree. I think we should have done more earlier, but I don't think the root cause is ours.
I have no idea how the Dell XPS 13 solves this issue (or if it had the same in the first place) but my understanding of the problem is needing the adaptive support from DPTF to detect between lap and desk mode.
There's some interesting mechanical work the mechanical engineers at Dell implemented. Look up "XPS 13 Mars Rover", which is super cool. Their fan and heat pipe solution on the current generation models is a big difference too.
DPTF Adaptive Performance Policy is a tricky one for reasons I won't get into. There's currently no complete open source solution. Platforms that are dependent on it are also currently dependent on a closed source solution from Intel. Even Google chose to ship with a closed source DPTF Adaptive Performance Policy on some fanless Chromebook designs.
Matthew Garrett has done some work on a reverse engineered implementation of Adaptive Performance, but it's still a work in progress as I remember.
We have to meet some temperature safety requirements when the device is on
lap. Because Linux doesn't have support for that the device defaults to the 'safer' power setting and you see thermal throttling (and lower performance than Windows). The new firmware does that lap/desk mode detection - and I'm told implementing that in the BIOS/EC firmware framework was non-trivial, It was done purely for Linux customers. The performance now for Linux users should be the same as for Windows users.
I think if DPTF had been open-sourced the thermal throttling would have been a non-issue. I can't comment on why that hasn't happen - I think really that's a question for Intel. Perhaps there are better solutions possible? They all get a bit vendor specific and I suspect would have been hard to upstream so firmware is a reasonable fix in my opinion.
Parts of DPTF Passive are implemented on Linux as open source, but Active and other newer stuff are where things get tricky.

My lips would be sealed with two NDAs. ;) You'd have to ask my good friend Barton George. But I will say that Dell was the first major OEM to ship Linux and has been shipping RH(E)L on Dell Precision continuously for 21 years (in addition to Ubuntu for 12 continuous years). You're in good hands with Dell if you choose to buy their products. And if you're a ThinkPad person, well clearly the choice is easier! It's great to see so much competition in the Linux laptop space these days!

The thermal throttling issue is definitely another big pain point. Here I'm really tied in what I can and can't say - I need permission from the thermal team to share full details and they haven't given that yet. But there is work still ongoing so I'll try and give you what little I can. As an aside - I know that forum thread well, and I completely get the frustration for users. I should add - all our 2020 Linux support platforms will have the thermal firmware solution implemented
- Yes, it's all tied in to DPTF and I personally (Lenovo hat off) think what Matthew is doing is really cool. I've been supporting the exercise where I can to make sure that solution works well on Lenovo platforms (you can check the merge request thread and issues on his fork as proof 😉). I'm hoping he gets it figured for the good of the community. I think it's a real shame Intel aren't giving open source support for DPTF
- The thermal team spent a long time trying to find a solution that didn't involve new FW. From our point of view it's actually quite a complicated and expensive thing to do and there are some technical limitations that mean it isn't back-portable to all platforms.
One big frustration I have is that some platforms are getting the fix - really quite soon - and others aren't and I've not been allowed to share which it is. There are technical reasons for this - it's not just us being difficult.
I think Lenovo's thermal firmware implementation is actually pretty cool and a very nice solution and it should have been a really good story on how we had this Linux related issue and provided a solution for our customers and instead it's turned into a big source of frustration for people. We need to improve how we communicate on issues like this but communicating in an open source way doesn't come naturally to everyone yet...
Obviously as a T480 user the above is useless....I do expect to be able to share the details of which platforms are in and out in the next month (I really hope!) Genuinely sorry I can't do it earlier (or 6 months ago).

And welcome aboard. I've been using a tweaked Legion Y520-15IKBN for a year and a half now and I'm a happy camper. I can't say that I understand hardware vendors' marketing decisions, like putting a heftier price tag on a "professional" machine, whereas a "gaming" laptop with the same specs costs almost 1000€ less, but this particular Legion model line is pretty inconspicuous, so you can work anywhere, without people staring.
One thing that I'd like to see, is linux support for the "energy manager" features - it's pretty much the only reason I've allowed windows to take up space on my laptops and I know I'm not the only one. I think that someone had written a kernel module that somehow managed to communicate with the battery controller, but since it's out of tree and we get quite a lot of kernel updates in Fedora, it's no fun rebuilding everything every 2-3 days. Is that something that's pretty standard among different model lines?
Oh and another thing, which is a peeve with laptop keyboards in general. I make full use of pretty much every key on a standard keyboard and I usually map the compose key to scroll lock, which I use a lot. Whenever I have to move to a laptop, I feel like someone has chopped off one of my limbs and seeing dedicated keys for things like recording and streaming one's gaming session drive me mad. About a decade and a half ago, there were distributions that offered a rudimentary UI to do key remapping, but along the way, as linux went through different methods to manage input devices, that sort of thing was dropped. Now that evdev seems to be with us for the foreseeable future, is there any chance you might consider such a feature, perhaps in collaboration with GNOME? Even if it's something buried under 15 menus in Tweaks, I'd be happy.

Pricing is fascinating. I've been trying to find out what the pricing is going to be on these platforms and how it is determined is really quite curious. Suffice to say - I don't understand it either 😊

Interesting. We have a feature coming out soon that I think will give you some of what you want. I've been working on a kernel driver to make it more user friendly and that will go upstream eventually (if it's accepted).
If there's any projects that are out there and that with some help from Lenovo would be good to get upstream let me know. Our kernel technical experience is still limited (working on that!) but the RH guys have been amazing for helping us.

I'm expecting to get yelled at as the super key will still have the windows logo on it - not able to change that yet I'm afraid We have some engineers in Japan who have been looking at those "hotkeys" and getting that functionality into Linux so they work. Not exactly the same as what you're asking for but in the same areas so I'll send this on their way and see what they think. My understanding is xorg was hard to do any of the remapping stuff but wayland is much better. Not something I've looked at myself though

I think tlp that James mentioned is pretty much the only project that has stuck around. There have been some other efforts sprouting every now and then, but I guess they got abandoned when their creators moved to different machines and lost interest.

One is a fork of the other, with their main difference being that the fork implements N:N mappings. They both work under Xorg and Wayland, because everything happens at a lower level, it's like plugging in a new input device. Your engineers might be interested in that.
