I don't get it, why isn't MAS implemented as the standard sound daemon for gnome and kde. Isn't it ready yet or is there another problem?

I'm ignorant about MAS, but one question to consider is:
Does MAS work in a non-graphical, non X11 environment?
Not everybody does audio stuff while running X.

There are competing solutions here, one other one is gstreamer which somewhat but not 100% overlaps MAS.
The main issue with MAS is that it's being developed commercially and the developers are looking for compensation for their work before really pushing it out into the desktop projects. A fair request, but nobody has agreed to pay as of yet.
The MAS demo is quite cool though, MAS certainly appears to work well.
