Gah, no it wouldn't be nice. It'd be nice if users never had to know
about those files at all.

Then are there going to be tools that seek and mount NFS and CIFS/SMB shares
on the network?
Automount is *not* user-friendly, and some means of dealing with the existence of
network shares is needed.
