%{_datadir}/%{name} instead?
Because they are examples, which are part of the supporting
documentation for a package, not a necessary part to make a package
work.
Now if you want to argue for a standard location or standard way to
package examples, that's a different matter which I'd fully support,
because making things easier for users is a good thing.
