Name: TeXmacs Version: 1.0.2.9 (likely to change...) License: GPL Language: C++ Website: http://www.texmacs.org Actively Maintained?: yes Author Contacted and Approved?: yes Packages exist?: yes (ftp://ftp.texmacs.org/pub/TeXmacs/rpm/) Description: TeXmacs is a WYSIWYG text processor for producing highest-quality texts easily. It is great for texts with mathematical formulae (but can be used for plain texts, too). It can include PostScript figures (or any format which can be transformed to PostScript). It can be used as a GUI for many scientific computation systems (Maxima, Axiom, octave, ...) It can import and export LaTeX and html files, and can produce PostScript and pdf. It is not a front-end to TeX, but contains a native typesetting engine (in many ways similar to TeX, but with enhancements). It can be scripted/extended in scheme (guile).
Reasons for requesting: TeXmacs is the best tool for producing high-quality scientific documents. The only competitor seems to be LyX. But LyX is a front-end to LaTeX, and hence not WYSIWYG. Also, LyX cannot be used as a GUI for computer algebra systems.
Rough Software Requirements: guile guile-dev tetex (for fonts, METAFONT)
Target: Core TeXmacs is a clear and obvious winner in its class. This excellent package can be useful for many users. (As a minimum, it can be put to Extras, but I think putting it to Core is more appropriate).
