I belive this has not been the case for a while now; livecd-iso-to-disk has:
--multi Used when installing multiple image copies to signal configuration

the boot files for the image in the --livedir <dir> parameter.
--livedir <dir> Used with multiple image installations to designate the directory

for the particular image.
When I last tried a year or two ago it kept blasting everything away and I found a related bug which I never saw fixed. Will have to try this again though. Thanks for the info.
