LTO is broken in Rawhide/33 containers
by Elliott Sales de Andrade
When using Fedora's containers, LTO appears to be broken. I'm not sure
who to report this to, the container builder or gcc.
$ podman run --pull=always --rm -it registry.fedoraproject.org/fedora:rawhide
# dnf install -y gcc
# echo 'int main(void) { int class=0; return class; }' > sanitycheck.c
# gcc -flto=auto sanitycheck.c -o sanitycheck
lto-wrapper: fatal error: execvp: No such file or directory
compilation terminated.
/usr/bin/ld: error: lto-wrapper failed
collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status
The test file is what Meson compiles as a check. This also fails on
fedora:33. For good measure, you can throw in a `dnf update -y`, but
it does not update/fix anything.
Running a similar check in `mock -r fedora-rawhide-x86_64` --shell works fine.

Release criteria proposal: first boot experience
by Michael Catanzaro
Hi,
We currently have a bug where the Online Accounts page in initial setup
is nonfunctional. [1] This doesn't violate any current release
criterion, but surely we don't want to release with a broken initial
setup experience. So let's add a new requirement for that. How about
something like:
"If an initial setup utility is run or intended to be run after the
first boot of the installed system, then it must start successfully and
each page or panel of the initial setup utility should withstand a
basic functionality test."
OK that's pretty basic, but it gets the point across. I think this can
be a final requirement, not necessarily important enough to be a beta
requirement. Bikeshed away!

Self Introduction: Tom Yates
by Tom Yates
Hello. I'm Tom Yates, I've been using free software since the late '80s,
and Red Hat since RHL 4.2 (ie, the late '90s). Because I'm really that
ancient, I fairly extensively use RCS (a very old revision control system)
and am posting with a view to becoming co-maintainer for an RCS package in
EPEL for RHEL8 (and later).
During work times I'm principally a consultant free software sysadmin,
with a sideline in writing, mostly for LWN.

Retirement: compat-openssl10
by Gwyn Ciesla
compat-openssl10 has just been retired. FTBFS bugs have just been filed against:
dmg2img
gnome-vfs2
gq
httperf
libwvstreams
netty-tcnative
samdump2
skipfish
snownews
sslscan
stud
telepathy-salut
ucommon
validns
vtun
They will need to be updated to use modern openssl, or retired. The dependency tree from these packages, particularly gnome-vfs2, is large, so please be advised.
