Mass bug proposal: packages that auto-enable systemd units
by Andrew Lutomirski
Hi all-
I propose a mass bug against packages that install services and enable
them without using the preset mechanism. Some of these can be
security issues if they get installed as dependencies.
As a related issue, it may pay to review the default presets. For
example, rpcbind is enabled. This seems bad.
I know of three of these bugs that already exist:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1089650
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1087951
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1087950
The text would be:

A number of packages install systemd units and enable them
automatically. They should not. Please update the package to use the
macroized scriptlet
(https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:ScriptletSnippets#Systemd).
If your package has an exception from FESCo permitting it to enable
itself, please make sure that the service in question is listed in the
appropriate preset file.
Given that this issue can affect Fedora 20 users who install your
package as a dependency, these bugs should be fixed in Fedora 20 and
Rawhide.
The affected packages are:

Audacious 3.5 entering Rawhide
by Michael Schwendt
With the fresh release of Audacious 3.5 final [1], I'm going to push this
new release also to Rawhide. It has been available via Copr [2] since
alpha1 already, and although I've not received any user feedback on the
pre-releases at all, I've evaluated it personally and also followed
upstream activity.
Relevant for the Fedora packages:
- plugin package rebuilds will be needed due to a new Plugin API version
- the Plugin API version has moved into header api.h, so package spec
files that grep the version need to be adjusted
- the API changes may require minor modifications to external plugins
I'll rebuild xmp-plugin-audacious as necessary unless there will be
a request not to do that yet.

Deliverables and release engineering changes for Fedora.Next
by Jaroslav Reznik
Hi!
As it seems, Fedora.Next and product planning leads also to changes
how Fedora is produced and how it's going to be distributed to our
users.
For this, we need to collect product deliverables, so needed changes
for release engineering can be planned (and implemented) and as I was
talking to Dennis, we're are currently blocked on it.
I created rel-eng ticket - WGs, please, try to sum up required changes
there (in consumable way), so we have it in one place (for possible
overlaps in requirements etc).
https://fedorahosted.org/rel-eng/ticket/5891
Currently, Alpha Change Deadline is planned for no earlier than
2014-07-22, it's not as far as it sounds, especially if changes
in releng are needed. So let's try to work this out as soon as
possible.
I suppose, in the end, FESCo should approve requested changes in
product deliverables. So once requirements are collected, I'll
create (yet another) ticket for FESCo. Or even better - as Cloud
did - Change proposal would be the best solution, even after the
submission deadline.
(Sorry for cross-posting;-).
Thanks
Jaroslav

Tuned: Restoring saved settings not working
by Preeti U Murthy
Hi everyone,
I am using Fedora20. I wanted to add a new tuned profile and used the
script plugin for the same.
This essentially tweaks the cpu frequency governor and min/max frequency
settings. When I opt out of this profile, I want the settings to be
restored. I have included the restoration functions in the file
'functions' and call the same from my script in the stop() function.
However the settings are not getting restored.
My observation is that the sysctl settings get restored on switching off
tuned or switching to another profile but settings other than the sysctl
ones like cpufreq governor or the ones set from the start() function of
the shell script never get restored with a subsequent call to stop()
function in the shell script in the latter case.
Can someone throw some more light on this issue? Does tuned require a
patch here?

Five Things in Fedora This Week (2014-04-22)
by Matthew Miller

Fedora is a big project, and it’s hard to follow it all. This series
highlights interesting happenings in five different areas every week.
It isn’t comprehensive news coverage — just quick summaries with links
to each. Here are the five things for April 22nd, 2014:
Making it easier to join Fedora
-------------------------------
The Fedora Join SIG is our special interest group dedicated to
improving the experience for new contributors. It’s been dormant for a
while, but it’s back with a bang thanks to Ankur Sinha, Amita Sharma,
Sarup Banskota, and others. A recent IRC meeting came up with a
couple of immediate ideas, including a Fedora site inspired by What can
I do for Mozilla?
If making Fedora more welcoming is interesting to you, join the mailing
list and help keep up the momentum.

Fedora Docs “Beats”
-------------------
Speaking of things you can do for Fedora… how about contributing
expertise in your area for the Fedora 21 release notes? I know F21′s
October release target seems a long way off, but there’s a lot to do
and the summer is going to fly by. Docs team leader Pete Travis
recently announced that F21 Beats are Open, noting:
> If you’re new to Docs, Beat writing is a good way to get
> started. Simply choose a package, service, or functionality
> that interests you and do a little research to see how will
> change in F21. You can check rawhide package changelogs, read
> the software changelogs in /usr/share/doc/$pkgname, scrape
> upstream mailing lists and commit logs, and /reach out to
> package maintainers or developers.
As always, Pete also provides great, non-intimidating guidance for new
docs contributors.

Fedora Workstation, and an alternate view — both part of Fedora!
----------------------------------------------------------------
Fedora Workstation developer Christian Schaller wrote a long blog post
explaining some of the mindset and background behind the upcoming
Fedora Workstation. If you care about Linux on the desktop, this is an
interesting read, whether you’re a GNOME fan or not (and whether or not
you agree). And if you *do* disagree, remember that that’s absolutely
okay too. Longtime Fedora contributor Stephen Smoogen (a self-described
“411 year old Linux administrator”) has a great blog post responding to
one particular Fedora Workstation decision and why he’s not worried.
Our “Fedora.next” efforts are additive rather than restrictive, and are
centered around our Friends Foundation; we may disagree on details, but
we can all work together to advance free software as a project.

Fedora Atomic?
--------------
At last week’s Red Hat Summit, Red Hat announced
a new initiative called Project Atomic. This isn’t really new
software, or a new operating system or distribution — it’s best
described as a pattern for putting together some pieces we already have.
Not surprisingly, a lot of these pieces were (and are) worked on by
Fedora contributors, including rpm-ostree, Docker, systemd,
and a new orchestration building-block called GearD (you can read
more about GearD on the OpenShift blog and of course you can
`yum install geard` to check it out).
So… (you may be thinking…) how does this fit into Fedora? Well, most of
these are parts that we have already been talking about in the Fedora
Cloud Working Group, and it may be that GearD provides one of the key
missing pieces. We’ve filed a Fedora 21 change proposal for a
specially-tailored Docker Host Image, and although we haven’t made any
decisions yet, it - looks like the Atomic patterns are very well
aligned with what we want to do (and overlap with what we are already
doing anyway), so that may end up being our “Fedora Atomic” cloud spin.
One of the pieces of Project Atomic that the Cloud WG *hadn’t* looked
at is Cockpit, a web-based server management GUI. The interesting thing
is that this is one of the key features proposed for Fedora Server, and
if we decide to include that part in our Docker cloud image, that will
be a point of coherence across the products. (See the Project Atomic
docs on what that might provide.)

Automatic Weekly Data!
----------------------
If I had been paying attention and knew about
<http://thisweekinfedora.org/> before I started doing these posts, I
might have named *this* something a bit less similar. Oh well! Names
aside, though, these articles and that site are actually complementary.
I pick out things to feature as they strike my attention, while This
Week in Fedora presents automatically-collected statistics every
Monday. You won’t really learn any *news*there, but you will find data
on all sorts of contributor activities, from package builds to user
creation to meetings logged. If you’re data-oriented, it’s an
interesting way to get a feel for the technical pulse of the community.

Ruby 1.9.3 with Rails 3.2.8 is still commonly used by many projects. Let's
provide Ruby and Rails in SCL even for Fedora. Rails depends on exact v8
version, which means v8 3.14 must have also their own SCL as part of the SCL.

F21 System Wide Change: Cockpit Management Console
by Jaroslav Reznik
= Proposed System Wide Change: Cockpit Management Console =
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/CockpitManagementConsole
Change owner(s): Stephen Gallagher <sgallagh(a)fedoraproject.org>, Marius
Vollmer, Stef Walter
The Fedora Server Product will ship the Cockpit Project as available by
default, providing an approachable tool for system management.
== Detailed Description ==
Cockpit is a server manager that makes it easy to administer your GNU/Linux
servers via a web browser.
* Easy to use
Cockpit is perfect for new sysadmins, allowing them to easily perform simple
tasks such as storage administration, inspecting journals and starting and
stopping services.
* No interference
Jumping between the terminal and the web tool is no problem. A service started
via Cockpit can be stopped via the terminal. Likewise, if an error occurs in
the terminal, it can be seen in the Cockpit journal interface.
* Multi-server
You can monitor and administer several servers at the same time.
== Scope ==
Inclusion of Cockpit as part of the default (not necessarily minimal) install
set for Fedora Server
* Proposal owners:
** Support for a modular architecture
** Improved network management
* Other developers: N/A
* Release engineering: Inclusion of cockpit into comps.xml
* Policies and guidelines: N/A
Special Requests: Cockpit would like to request an additional 2-4 weeks on the
Fedora 21 schedule to ensure completion of the core functionality.
