F22 System Wide Change: Elasticsearch
by Jaroslav Reznik
= Proposed System Wide Change: Elasticsearch =
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/Elasticsearch
Change owner(s): Jiri Vanek <jvanek(a)rehat.com>
Goal of this change is to pack Elasticsearch into main Fedora repo.
== Detailed Description ==
The Elasticsearch [1] is fully-featured self-standing opensource [2] indexing
server. Many people and many tools do use it. And many people do want it in
Fedora. Aim of this Change is to make elastic search available by simple yum
install elasticsearch, and of course enable it as dependence. To build a
custom indexing tool on top of elastic search is more easy than current
upstream install and download.
== Scope ==
* Proposal owners:
** pack Elasticsearch - nearly done - see RHBZ#902086
** make it somehow works
** verify it works
** tune list of crucial dependencies
** enable Elasticsearch as service - something what have to be decided
* Other developers:
** '''This is crucial part of this proposal'''
** Elastic search is extremely tuned application, and like it, its
dependencies must be strictly kept in correct versions
** Currently known troublemakers:
*** lucene
*** netty3
*** sigar
*** compress-lzf
*** guava (currently needed 18, avaiable 17)
* Release engineering:
** Nothing I'm aware about.
* Policies and guidelines:
** Nothing I'm aware about.
** maybe... fedora is going by way - keep as updated as possible, if it
breaks something, that something have to be fixed. This is not best for ES.
Maybe ES can et some helping exception?

Poll: How users use DNF
by Radek Holy
Dear users of YUM and DNF,
I'm writing to you regarding a request for your feedback. I would be very grateful if you could send me a brief description of how you use YUM or DNF currently or how would you like to use it. I am particularly interested in the occurrences of "dnf/yum install" calls in your scripts. What does these scripts do and what do they expect when they call the "install" command in different situations?
Please share with me the use cases, not the description of the "install" command. Think twice before you share something because I believe it's not as easy as it might seem. As an example I think it might be something like:
- "I call YUM install, because I want to get given packages into my system and I don't care whether it requires an upgrade or downgrade or what." or
- "I want to get them there but it should protect me against dangerous operations like downgrades" or
- "I often make typos, so I expect that the program knows what I mean" or
- "it would be nice if it would literally perform the installation; if any of the packages cannot be installed because of any reason, it should fail".
Not something like: "that's obvious that the install command should never downgrade packages".
Please focus on *use cases*. The *real* (non-hypothetical) use cases. Not on the command's name as it might also result in a new command (while preserving the well-known install command together with an appropriate behaviour).
I don't mind if you send it offlist (or to another list). I think there is no need to comment on anyone's use case. Every case is valid. Just not every case can be supported.
Thank you very much in advance.

Per the FPC decision that libgnome-volume-control is not an acceptable
copylib, and therefore it has to be packaged as a static lib and
packages using it modified to use it, some questions:
1. who should be performing the modification?
2. presumably reviews of new packages depending on this would be blocked
until such a static lib is available?
3. presumably whereas legacy packages that have already gone in are
fine, we won't want to yank them
Best regards,

Did I mess up? [dcmtk abi change in stable branches]
by Mario Ceresa
Dear all,
I need some help because I messed up with the last update of dcmtk. I
upgraded the package in rawhide because a vulnerability was discovered and
then happily submitted updates for f20 and f21 as well.
However, in the upgrade there was an abi change (from 3.6 to 3.6.1) which
is small, but enough to break the rpm dependency parsing for orthanc and
aeskulap packages.
Now, simply recompiling them fixes the problem in rawhide, but how can I
avoid breaking things in stable branches? Is there a way to have all three
packages hit the repositories at the same time?
Thanks for your help and sorry for messing up,
Mario
BTW: great work with f21!

Re: F22 System Wide Change: Change xorg input stack to use libinput

Not true. We ship kcm_touchpad on the KDE spin, which definitely does depend
on synaptics interfaces (search for "synaptics" in:
https://projects.kde.org/projects/playground/utils/kcm-touchpad/repositor... ).
Anything that does not use the synaptics driver is not considered a
touchpad. And kcm_touchpad is also in the process of becoming a core part of
upstream Plasma. (It is currently in the git.kde.org playground.)
Therefore, porting kcm_touchpad (the rewritten 1.x series we currently ship,
not the old, obsolete, 0.3.x version, please make sure you look at the
correct version) is an essential requirement before we can move away from
the synaptics driver.
An additional objection I have to this change proposal is that libinput
(deliberately) only implements a small subset of the configurability of the
old drivers, and thus, if we are going to remove the old drivers entirely,
we are taking away flexibility from our users.
