Heads up! Erlang package becomes modularized in Fedora.
by Peter Lemenkov
Hello All!
CC to devel(a)lists.fedoraproject.org
CC to erlang-questions(a)erlang.org
I would like to attract attention those erlangers, who use Fedora and
especially those of them, who use Erlang from Fedora's main
repository. Others are safe :)
Since Erlang adoption steadily grows and more applications, written in
Erlang, becomes popular, people starts complaining about the way
Erlang is delivered in Fedora. One large bulk containing mixture of
erlang/c/java sources, beam-files, examples, which has heavy
dependencies like wxGTK and Java, is not that Average Joe wants when
he tries to install his favorite document-oriented database, yet
another web-server, xmpp-server or something similar.
The problem is that we try to offer users a package with as much
features enabled, as we could, so we can't simply disable some
functionality at a build time. All we really can do here is to split
one large package into pieces. Few of us (Fedora maintainers) briefly
discussed this situation, and there is a consensus, that we should
split off at least some parts of main Erlang package.
I did some investigation, and find a way to completely modularize
whole Erlang package. In a few words - main package consists of purely
virtual 'erlang' package and a dozens of sub-packages (from
erlang-appmon to erlang-xmerl - one sub-package for each
%{_libdir}/erlang/lib/* item). The main virtual package 'erlang'
depends on every subpackage, so if you prefer to install/upgrade
erlang by typing "yum install erlang" you won't see any difference.
What's new is a set of scripts to generate cross-subpackage
dependencies. The approach for dependency generation is very
straightforward and simple - with the addition to normal RPM
dependency generator, each ebin/*.beam file within each sub-package is
analyzed for imported and exported functions, and they are added (in
form of erlang(Module:Finction/Arity)) to the list of RPM provides and
requires.
Other visible change is a removal of c_src, java_src and erlang
src/*.erl files from subpackages. In fact, everything stored in /usr
is not intended for recompiling by user, so it's safe to remove these
files. If someone have any *technical* objections for doing this, it's
time to dispute this change. At the first try, I did very sensitive
mistake (already recovered) - unfortunately some *.hrl files, which
should be stored in %{module}-%{version}/include intentionally stored
in %{module}-%{version}/src . We can't do much here since many users
hardcode these paths in their projects, so I just leaved all *.hrl
files in src directory intact.
I also remove empty and *.o files and fixed some installation errors
with priv libraries, but these are minor changes.
I repeat and emphasize - I'll do my best to achieve full compatibility
with previous installations, and I'm pretty sure that all these
changes wont break anything. Also I'm sure that we need to push this
change into both F-12 and forthcoming F-13, since benefits are really
great (if everything will be done properly and careful, of course -
that's why I'm still testing every erlang-related package, included
(and even yet not included) in Fedora for possible regressions).
Fedora 11, EL-4 and EL-5 will remain unchanged.
List of affected packages:

Any objections and commentaries are highly welcome!

F-13 xulrunner/firefox security update: need to rebuild dependents
by Michel Alexandre Salim
The update,
https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/xulrunner-1.9.2.3-1.fc13,firefox-...
was pushed out yesterday, however, other packages depending on
xulrunner are not rebuilt, and thus users with any of these installed
will not be able to install the updates. I'm not sure how to fix this,
beyond rebuilding the related packages and pushing the builds out
ASAP.
The list below is produced using repoquery --alldeps --whatrequires
xulrunner | sort -- I just updated and built Miro, but could someone
who normally pushes out xulrunner update rebuild the rest?

Re: [SECURITY] Fedora 13 Update: xulrunner-1.9.2.3-1.fc13
by Yanko Kaneti
Thank you for breaking every explicit gecko-libs dependency out there in
a branch close to release. :/
You know gecko-libs provides/requires are there exactly to avoid this
sort of thing, right? Both callion and xhorak can probably share some
tips with you about doing xulrunner/firefox + deps upgrades en masse
without bothering all dep maintainers.
The fact that this got directly in stable without accounting the
(avoidable) breakage is another different and unfortunate failure of
process.
I'll wait a bit for someone to do the responsible thing here...

F12 Kernel problems on Intel/Atom
by Richard Z
Hi,
just noticed last night that noone of the recent Fedora-12 kernels "works" on
my Atom Netbook with Intel graphics - typical netbook.
I did not have the possibility to investigate and do a proper bug report yet but
for me the most recent one that works is something 2.6.31 based and at least two
2.6.32 based kernels that came in with recent updates did not work.
Otoh my self compiled 2.6.32.8 works fine.
The symptoms point to Intel graphic problem - the kernel boots with a blank
screen, when I type the dm-crypt password blindly it appears to boot in the
background but nothing ever appears on the screen. I will try to login remotely
later today and look if I can see anything obvious.

Graphics Test Week is coming!
by Adam Williamson
As racing has the Monaco GP, tennis has Wimbledon, and soccer has the
World Cup, so the Test Day schedule has its crowning event: yes, it's
Graphics Test Week again!
As with Fedora 12, we're smooshing all the graphics card Test Days into
one week to save space on the schedule and make everything feel that
much more momentous. So, Tuesday April 13th will be NVIDIA (nouveau)
Test Day [1], Wednesday April 14th will be ATI/AMD (radeon) Test Day
[2], and Thursday April 15th will be Intel graphics Test Day [3]. As
always, we need your feedback to know where we're at for the Fedora 13
cycle and fix as many critical bugs ahead of release as we can. Again as
always, it's not a disaster if you miss the day - you can do the testing
before or after the day, and we'll still be able to use your results;
the day is just when you can be sure someone will be around on IRC to
help with the testing and discuss the results. And finally, again as
always, there's no need to have an unstable Fedora installation to do
the testing: you can use a live CD if you don't want to install Fedora
13 or Rawhide.
Significant changes to graphics support for Fedora 13 include very
experimental 3D support for NVIDIA cards, and improvements to the
still-experimental 3D support for recent AMD/ATI cards. Please do come
out and help us with the testing this week! You can do all the testing
just by following the Wiki instructions, but there will also be QA team
members or developers present in #fedora-test-day on Freenode IRC
throughout the day to help with the testing and discuss the results (and
possibly even fix some of the bugs in real time).

problem with koji build of my package, doesn't occur on local mock build
by Eric Smith
I'm trying to get a the AS cross-assembler (aka "asl") packaged for
Fedora, and I've run up against a problem. I'm developing on an x86_64
F-12 system, and I can build the package properly for both x86_64 and
i686 F-12 using mock on my local machine. However, when I submit my
SRPM for a scratch build on koji for either F-12 or F-13, the x86_64
build fails.
The asl build process builds a tool called "rescomp" that is used to
convert message files into a different format. rescomp is then run
during the build process, but rescomp itself is not packaged since it is
only an intermediate part of the build. When the x86_64 build fails on
koji, rescomp gives an error message when processing as.res. This does
not happen on my own system.
I added a patch to rescomp to get a backtrace when the error occurs, but
I'm not getting symbols in the backtrace, so the backtrace alone is not
sufficient. Is there any way I can obtain a copy of the rescomp
executable built on the koji server to run under gdb on my own system?
I'd also like other people to try building my SRPM with mock on other
systems, to see if anyone can replicate the problem. The spec and SRPM
are available at:
http://fedorapeople.org/~brouhaha/asl/
Thanks!

Help needed - packaging maven plugin
by Guido Grazioli
Hello,
im trying to package a maven plugin which depends on maven-release-plugin;
where has it gone? Im almost sure it was included at the time of F-7 / F-8,
and also the maven sample template in the java guidelines on the wiki
suggest its use.
pkgdb and yum return no result searching for it.
Thanks in advance, regards
