Suggestions
by Elad
Hello.
First of all: thank you, fedora developers, for making such a great linux
distro.
I think I have some good ideas and suggestions that might help you improve
Fedora:
1) Create a new plymouth theme (or in other words, ask the artwork team to
do so):
The current default plymouth theme is almost the same theme from fedora 11.
I think we need to change it.
2) Plymouth boot splash background should match the gdm background
as I've explained here: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=550321
3)Plymouth needs a graphical user interface to select the boot splash
screen, with a preview of the selected theme, so the user wouldn't have to
reboot to see if he likes the theme.
4)
yum should select the mirror to download from in a smarter way, considering
the current load on the mirror and the distance of the mirror from the user.
This will help reduce the load on the mirrors and make the download faster
for the user. The mirrorlist server should know what is the load on each
mirror, and give yum the mirrorlist sorted by the load and the distance from
the user. yum should prefer the less busy and closest mirror it can find.
5)PackageKit UI improvements:
5.1)When downloading packages, display the percentage of the download
progress on the progress bar
5.2)Fix bug #551201 ( https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=551201)
5.3)Make it possible to undo transactions using gpk-log
6)BiDi problems with translations:
this problem is the most annoying thing in fedora for me. gnome-terminal for
example doesn't have any bidi support. terminals are not supposed to support
BiDi
but the problem begins with applications like pkcon or diff, in which
terminal output is also translated.
that causes unreadable output. e.g if the output was supposed to be שלום it
will display םולש.
there are two ways to fix this problem
1) make gnome-terminal and others support BiDi output
2) put a comment in each POT file that warns the translator about strings
which will be written in the terminal so translators would know what should
be translated
I think the first way is better.
7)Combine all hardware listing programs (e.g hwbrowser, usbview, lshw-gui)
into one, comprehensive, easy to use GUI.
thank you for listening.

Java package maintainers, please, add missing requires to your packages.
by Peter Lemenkov
Hello All!
Recently I (re)started to package some big java application, and as
one of side effect of this work, I take a closer look on current state
of java packages in Fedora and I was disappointed with what I saw
here.
Quick summary - many java packages does not obey Fedora Packaging
Guidelines in case of owning a directories, already owned by other
packages.
As a result - some packages owns %{_javadir}, some - %{_javadocdir},
some - own directories with maven-related stuff. This mess must be
fixed!
Please, take a closer look at your spec-files and
a) Add Requires jpackage-utils to main package's header if your
package stores something in %{_javadir}
b) Add Requires jpackage-utils to *-javadoc subpackage's header if you
store something in %{_javadocdir}
c) Do NOT own %{_javadir} - e.g. do NOT list bare directory
%{_javadir} in %files section. Instead use something like
%{_javadir}/*
d) The same rule applies for /usr/share/maven2, /etc/maven/fragments (
%{_mavendepmapfragdir} ) and /usr/share/maven2/poms ( %{_mavenpomdir}
) and other - these two already owned by jpackage-utils.
e) Check for other directories, already owned by other packages. Foe
example, take a look at the "rpm -ql jpackage-utils" and you'll see
the list of directories, owned by this package - these directories can
NOT be owned by other packages. Add proper Requires instead.
I already fixed some packages, byt there are lots of them remaining.
For example, very often people forgot to add "Requires:
jpackage-utils" to *-javadoc.
Please, do NOT fix packages ONLY in Rawhide (as some of us do usually)
- proposed fixes doesn't ruin ABI or API compatibility, and should be
applied in every active branch.
Please, keep in mind that adding Requires(post) and Requires(postun)
is not the same as adding Requires. One could easily remove packages,
listed in Requires(post|postun), and your package should work and
whole filesystem tree should remain consistent (I mean every directory
should have their respective owner). Thus, enlisting jpackage-utils in
Requires(post) only is not enough if you store something in
%{_javadir}.
Thank you for your attention!

Potential pkgdb-0.5.x release on staging
by Toshio Kuratomi
After a round of bug reports and bug fixing I have a new pkgdb up in the
staging environment for testing. I do not know of any problems with this
version at the moment so I'd appreciate people who use the pkgdb to change
acls frequently or query it for data give it a try and see that everything
is working for them. If there's no reports of problems I'll be pushing this
to production soon. If I'm available for part of the weekend I'll push it
Friday. If not, I'll push it out on Monday.
A new python-fedora based on 0.3.16.90 which works with the new pkgdb will
be built and pushed into updates-testing at that time as well::

F13 Alpha - Zarafa
by Brian C. Huffman
All,
I'm curious why Fedora chose to include Zarafa as opposed to other (mostly) opensource groupware solutions?
Ones that come to mind: Scalix, Open-Exchange, Zimbra.
Thanks,
Brian

Proposed udpates policy change
by Matthew Garrett
This is the policy that I expect to be discussed during the Fesco
meeting tomorrow. This is entirely orthogonal to the ongoing discussions
regarding whether updates in stable releases should be expected to
provide features or purely bugfixes, and I don't see any conflict in
introducing it before those discussions have concluded.
Introduction
------------
We assume the following axioms:
1) Updates to stable that result in any reduction of functionality to
the user are unacceptable.
2) It is impossible to ensure that functionality will not be reduced
without sufficient testing.
3) Sufficient testing of software inherently requires manual
intervention by more than one individual.
Proposal
--------
The ability for maintainers to flag an update directly into the updates
repository will be disabled. Before being added to updates, the package
must receive a net karma of +3 in Bodhi.
It should be noted that this does not require that packages pass through
updates-testing. The package will appear in Bodhi as soon as the update
is available. If sufficient karma is added before a push occurs, and the
update is flagged for automatic pushing when the karma threshold is
reached, the update will be pushed directly to updates.
It is the expectation of Fesco that the majority of updates should
easily be able to garner the necessary karma in a minimal space of time.
Updates in response to functional regressions should be coordinated with
those who have observed these regressions in order to confirm that the
update fixes them correctly.
At present, this policy will not apply to updates that are flagged as
security updates.
The future
----------
Defining the purpose of Fedora updates is outside the scope of Fesco.
However, we note that updates intended to add new functionality are more
likely to result in user-visible regressions, and updates that alter ABI
or API are likely to break local customisations even if all Fedora
packages are updated to match. We encourage the development of
mechanisms that ensure that users who wish to obtain the latest version
of software remain able to do so, while not tending to introduce
functional, UI or interface bugs for users who wish to be able to
maintain a stable platform.

Webcam Test Day tomorrow (Thursday 2010-03-11)
by Adam Williamson
This Thursday, 2010-03-11, is webcam Test Day [1]. It's really pretty
simple: if you have a webcam we want you to boot up a recent Fedora and
check if it works. There's detailed instructions on the Wiki page but
that's really what it boils down to - fire up your webcam, run Cheese or
something like it, and make sure it all works well. If not, let us know
about it! As always, the Test Day runs all Thursday in #fedora-test-day
on Freenode IRC.

Actually what I do, Roland, it that I grab binutils daily tarball
and rebuild it as Source0 of Rawhide's SRPM (really ugly...) so I
always use the latest one, see '-r' option. Drawback in the script
is that it always rebuilds binutils even if you have today's
binutils RPMs somewhere, that's just a detail a the moment, I guess.

My observation is that 80-90 % of packages can be built however I doubt
all of resulting binaries work. Most notably kernel fails to build.

I just set x86_64 machine up and will try to rebuild whole F-13
package set. Will report results back (someday :).
