tagging of non critical path package into F-12?
by Peter Robinson
Hi All,
I presume that the reason that tagging requests aren't being done is
due to the upcoming beta but is there a reason that non core or
critical path packages can't be tagged in. I have a number of Moblin
packages that fix various issues, in particular a rebuild of
network-manager-netbook to fix networking against the latest NM build
that hit just before the cut off. Given that none of these packages
would be anywhere near any of the official spins is there any
particular reason they can't be tagged in? Or if not when will they be
reviewed?

Fix possibility of infinite loop in init scripts in time for Fedora 12?
by hidenori.ishii@avasys.jp
A colleague of mine submitted a bug report regarding an infinite loop
triggered when calling `lsb_start_daemon` with the `-p` option[1]. This
bug has been around since at least Fedora 9 and is still present in the
beta for Fedora 12.
Considering the fact that `lsb_start_daemon` is supposed to be called
from init scripts, this may hang the boot process. That's pretty bad.
I know it's a bit late, but seeing that there is a patch, any chance of
getting this in for Fedora 12?

Rationale behind _cmake_skip_rpath choice in /etc/rpm/macros.cmake
by Theodore Papadopoulo
I would like to understand why the file macros.cmake as distributed in
fedora-10 defines:
%_cmake_skip_rpath -DCMAKE_SKIP_RPATH:BOOL=ON
I use cmake to build an rpm for a software that builds several libraries
and binaries (based
on those libraries). In the spec file of my rpm I decided to add some
make test
into order to check at rpm build time that everything is OK (I agree
that this is probably an overkill).
Disabling the rpath made all the checks to fail, so I added a:
%define _cmake_skip_rpath -DCMAKE_SKIP_RPATH:BOOL=OFF
at the beginning of my specfile.
But I wonder whether there is any risk in doing so.... Is there a risk
of library interception if someone
re-creates a library in the ??
I suppose that the choice was made on purpose, I just want to assess the
risk I'm taking in having
this approach. Otherwise, I'll just remove the test stuff from the spec
file (as I found no other way
of doing the tests... Setting LD_LIBRARY_PATH before the make test does
not seem to work
probably because ctest is careful in setting a clean environment for the
tests....).
The only other solution I can think of would be putting the check in the
%install section after having
done the make install and testing with a chroot placed on
$RPM_BUILD_ROOT (but I fear I need a
subshell for the rpm process to proceed after the test) ?
Are there any advice on this ?
In advance, thank's a lot.

Talked with Jesse in IRC. It seems we are in agreement that for the
moment we will treat all bodhi update requests as tag requests. We will
flush this queue to rawhide allowing immediate testing to all rawhide
users. After a package is tagged into f12-final, the corresponding
bodhi request will be cancelled to mark it as "done".
To avoid confusion, while we in the short-term will process both rel-eng
tag requests and Bodhi updates-as-tag-requests, know that the latter is
only a temporary measure until we figure out the ideal future procedure.
Sometime later we will decide to begin staging real updates in Bodhi.
Jesse wants to discuss this in Monday's rel-eng meeting.

Reminder: Tagging Policy for Fedora 12
by Warren Togami
This is just a reminder about the tagging policy for packages built for
Fedora 12 past the development freeze.
What Qualifies for Tagging?
===========================
* You must have tested the build yourself. Great shame to be bestowed
if you break things so close to the release! Great Shame!
* http://wwoods.fedorapeople.org/files/critical-path/deplist.txt
Anything on the critical path list requires two votes from Fedora
release engineering. Critical path is loosely defined as packages that
can break the ability to install or update. Typically rel-eng might do
some sanity tests of your package as well, but don't count on them to
find non-obvious issues.
* Anything not on the critical path list can be approved by release
engineering with a single vote.
* You DID test it right?
Many Builds Not Tagged, but Probably Should Be
==============================================
# koji list-tagged --latest dist-f12-updates-candidate
This command shows over 400 packages are built for F-12 but not tagged
for release.
https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/F12/pending
Currently there are 270+ packages in the pending queue to become Fedora
12 updates. Many if not all of the packages requested update at this
point probably belong tagged into rawhide immediately. Requesting it
for updates at this point is problematic because you miss out on several
weeks of testing only for it to show up as an update on day zero when
Fedora 12 is released. Tagging policy might tighten up in the coming
weeks then it might make sense to push as day zero updates at that point.
How to Request Tagging
======================
https://fedorahosted.org/rel-eng
Please file requests to have your post-freeze build included here.
Please include the full Name-Version-Release of your build in the
Summary of the ticket. To save rel-eng's time it might be helpful to
mention a few other details like:
* How important is this?
* How much have you tested it?
* Is it on the critical path list?

Are packages w/o necessary kernel modules allowed?
by Peter Lemenkov
Hello All!
Imagine an application, which relies on a specific kernel module. This
module is not a part of stock Fedora kernel (at least, yet), and we
don't allow stand-alone kernel modules.
Whether or not this package can be allowed?

# ls -la /etc/pki/tls/openssl.cnf.rpmnew /etc/pki/tls/openssl.cnf
-rw-r--r--. 1 root root 10906 30. Jun 13:17 /etc/pki/tls/openssl.cnf
-rw-r--r--. 1 root root 10906 30. Jun 13:17 /etc/pki/tls/openssl.cnf.rpmnew
# rpm -V openssl
(no output)
This seems strange: same times, same checksum, but still an .rpmnew file.
Here are two more:
/var/lib/games/same-gnome.Small.scores.rpmnew
/var/log/mail/statistics.rpmnew
Not sure why we would ever need an rpmnew file for that: should these be
labelled as something other than config files?
Another one:
# md5sum /usr/share/info/dir.rpmnew /usr/share/info/dir
91ba35a21c163a55982bedaab076bc7f /usr/share/info/dir.rpmnew
0737290f14a0ce86986de276d1083783 /usr/share/info/dir
# wc -l /usr/share/info/dir.rpmnew /usr/share/info/dir
22 /usr/share/info/dir.rpmnew
2127 /usr/share/info/dir
2149 total
I didn't change this file. That's weird. Same case here:
/usr/lib64/security/classpath.security.rpmnew
/usr/lib64/security/classpath.security
and here:
/etc/sgml/docbook/xmlcatalog.rpmnew
/etc/sgml/docbook/xmlcatalog
I'm not sure where these changes are coming from. Shall I file bugs
against each package, or is this intended behaviour?

Hi,
lately we formulated concept of openSUSE Junior Jobs[1]. Maintainers of
openSUSE packages can choose some of theirs easy bugs and mark them as
Junior Jobs. Then anybody from community can volunteer and fix these
issues. These tasks will be easily fixable and their purpose is to let
people learn how to contribute and to create some easy task so anybody
can join and start participating.
