RE: few ideas how to make fedora better as a desktop
by Shawn Starr
Well, one can do a gradual shift no? just like upstart is doing. Keeping compatibility is needed, and will be for a long time. Im not avocating a complete scrap :-)
Setting $PATH for all users to have /sbin and /usr/sbin is pretty safe to me

overriding rpmrc options inside mock
by Hans de Goede
Hi,
I've contacted Matt Domsch to ask him to add
-Werror-implicit-function-declaration to the default optflags with his next
mass rebuild to get an idea of the amount of packages that this will cause to
fail (most likely a huge amount, but we will see).
Matt is so kind as to give this a try, but, to quote him: "Where do I add that
option to make sure it's in effect for the mock builds?"
I have no clue, so how do we this?
Regards,
Hans

Using mock to build a chain of packages
by Richard W.M. Jones
I'm sure this must be a common question, but I can't work it out from
the man page and various online mock resources.
I want to build a 'chain' of packages in mock -- packages A, B and C
where after A is built it must be installed because it is a
BuildRequires for B, and similarly B must be installed before C is
built. None of these packages is in the Fedora verison (8) that I'm
using.
I can build and install package A fine:
$ mock -r fedora-8-i386 rpmbuild/SRPMS/ocaml-fileutils-0.3.0-3.fc8.src.rpm
# rpm --root /var/lib/mock/fedora-8-i386/root -Uvh /var/lib/mock/fedora-8-i386/result/ocaml-fileutils-*.i386.rpm
Preparing... ########################################### [100%]
1:ocaml-fileutils ########################################### [ 50%]
2:ocaml-fileutils-devel ########################################### [100%]
Now package B, but the build fails:
$ mock -r fedora-8-i386 --no-clean /home/rjones/rpmbuild/SRPMS/ocaml-gettext-0.2.0-1rwmj20080321.fc8.src.rpm

INFO: Results and/or logs in: /var/lib/mock//fedora-8-i386/result
ERROR: Bad build req: No Package Found for ocaml-fileutils-devel. Exiting.
But ocaml-fileutils-devel (the A package) _is_ installed in the
buildroot:
$ rpm --root /var/lib/mock/fedora-8-i386/root -qa | grep fileutils
ocaml-fileutils-devel-0.3.0-3.fc8
ocaml-fileutils-0.3.0-3.fc8
What am I doing wrong!?
Also: Is there a way to make this all easier? What I _really_ want to
do is to pass a lengthy list of SRPMS to mock and have it just work
out the dependencies (including install dependencies) and have it
build & install them.
Rich.

Compositor in GDM

New GDM's feature (from wiki):
"a compositor on the login screen, for nice graphical effects"
I don't think this may be a good idea... openSUSE had this, and the
compiz ran by GDM never get killed...

Keyboard weirdness after fresh F9-Beta install
by "Jóhann B. Guðmundsson"
By the way great work guys..
Anaconda installation went smoothly
No extra kernel parameters needed during install
( other than the one I used to enable ext4 support )
Wireless and Bluetooth work out of the box :)
Any way back to the things that did not work so well ;)
HW Dell inspiron 6000
Language used during install process English(English)
Keyboard Layout Icelandic
Default installation Next etc.. --> Done
Firstboot seems to know my chosen layout Icelandic
but seems to be using 101 keys instead of 105
or the first name box itself is some how corrupt..
( Tested in the first name box )
Have some Icelandic characters working..
some keys which by the way contain Icelandic characters are not working )
GDM seems to be set to 105 US
( Tested by choosing other and try to type Icelandic character
in the user name field )
Log into my newly created account in Gnome
Go to System --> Administration --> Keyboard and it is set to Icelandic
Go to System --> Prefrence --> Hardware --> Keyboard --> Layouts
Keyboard model detected as Generic 105-key (Intl) PC
Should be.
Vendor Dell
Laptop/Notebook Inspiron 6xxx/8xxx
Layout only shows and defaults to USA in stead of
Icelandic and default to Icelandic only!!!!!
Is the keyboard layout chosen in anaconda even being set as default for
GDM and GNOME?
After making the above changes keyboard and keyboard layout
work as they should ( tested in gnome terminal and gedit )
Switch to tty1 everything working there as it should...
( Layout Icelandic all keys work )
Also i'm experiencing superior slowness of touchpad/mouse both during
install
( Anaconda ) and in GDM and Gnome
System --> Prefrence --> Hardware --> Mouse --> Pointer speed -->
Acceleration set to Fast
Mouse still slow, slower than it was in first boot!!!
Screen 15.4 wide
System --> Administration --> Display
Shows Resolution 1680x1050 instead of 1600x1200 !
( 1600x1200 not even an option.. no wide support :( )
Driver radeon
Where is GDM getting it's keyboard layout from?
Any know bugs related to extreme slow touchpad/mouse
Best regards
Johann B.

For three out of 5454 packages, the src.rpm name is spelled differently in
bugzilla:
src.rpm name: bugzilla component:
PyAmanith pyamanith
perl-IPC-Run3 perl-IPC-RUN3
perl-mogilefs-server perl-MogileFS-Server
All others match.
