Using private branches in CVS?
by Ville Skyttä
Hello,
We'd like to start preparing updating vdr to 1.6.x. It's not 100% clear if
this will be feasible for F9, so I think it'd be good to work on a private
branch in CVS and keep devel at 1.4.x until it's clear that the update will
happen, and then merge to the devel branch.
Are there any instructions how to set up and work on private branches like
this the right way? I'm trying to search Wiki for instructions but didn't
find anything relevant using the title search and the full text search gives
me "500 internal server error"s.

KDE4 rawhide kdm administrator mode
by mike cloaked
Does anyone know if there has been any progress on the issue of getting
administrator mode in KDE4 in rawhide yet? With current updated rawhide
the kdm login manager has no way to get into admin mode from normal user.
This has been discussed before but is there any progress on this upstream?
Is it likely to have this available before f9 release? Will it need to wait till
4.1? (or 4.2?)

boot.iso bigger then normal?
by Louis Garcia
Rawhide as of this weekend has boot.iso coming in at just under 116MB.
f9-alpha has the boot.iso under 12MB. What gives?

Application for GSoC Project - Extend Bootchart to support SystemTap
by Parantapa Bhattacharya
Hi List
I am a student form India who wants to participate in this years GSoC for
Fedora. I want to do the project "Extend Bootchart to support SystemTap"
or "A visualization tool for SystemTap" for fedora. But I am a bit more
inclined in doing the Bootchart support rather than creating a GUI.
I am a fourth year student of doing by Bachelor of Engineering degree
with Information Technology major. I am confident in C, XML and have
acquaintance with Java, python and pygtk.
I have done a little project, creating an extension for the file systems
in Linux. It currently works only on ext2 and ext3, but is very portable.
The system keeps a log of who `opened' a file and when he `opened' it along
with the modification, access and change times of the file. All the data
generated is transmitted over the network to a remote machine for logging.
I haven't submitted it for inclusion in the kernel, as I felt that the
project was for use in some specific situations only and not for all.
Presently I am working on a paper describing the project.
I think I will be able to successfully complete either of these projects
in stipulated time, with expected results.
However since I am not a regular user of SystemTap or Bootchart, I am not
very sure what would be the expectation of the systems that I will be
creating. Thus I would be really glad if you can help me write the
detailed deliverables and other things for the application.
Thanking You

Re: Upstart problems

Hey, Mark,
I don't care now about the speed of startup, but my "shutdown" gone...
Hmmmm, there was gnome-session update to 2.20.3. I'll check if downgrade
helps. This may be source of my problems.

Debugging kernel memory usage
by Ralf Ertzinger
Hi.
I have a current rawhide system which (running Gnome, Firefox and Claws)
uses 1.7 Gigs of RAM (+256MB in Swap, caches and buffers already subtracted).
The system has 3 Gig, so that's not an immediate problem, but I'd sure like
to know where all that memory has gone.
top shows no obvious offenders in the memory department, and I'm not
really sure how to read /proc/{meminfo,slabinfo,zoneinfo}. Is there
a webpage detailing how to find out how much memory the kernel uses
for it's own purposes, possibly sorted by the module that allocated it?

kernel: Uhhuh. NMI received for unknown reason...
by "Jóhann B. Guðmundsson"
This has been going on of depending on kernels shipped with FC6-8 I
noticed it...
( HW: Dell inspiron 6000 ) ( yes with the latest kernel FC8 )
Uhhuh. NMI received for unknown reason bX on CPU 0.
You have some hardware problem, likely on the PCI bus.
Dazed and confused, but trying to continue....
Can we fix this messages somehow it's kinda misleading, it
suggest that the hw is failing when in 99% it's a buggy driver..
When I read "You have some hardware problem" I think
my hardware is failing and I need to backup my data
and replace the part that is failing....
Better would be..
Uhhuh. NMI received for unknown reason bX on CPU 0.
I have been feed [ driver X ] buggy driver ...
Dazed and confused, but trying to continue....
Best regards.
