OpenChange, etc.
by Jerry Amundson
Has anyone picked up the OpenChange feature (Samba4, libmapi, Heimdal)?
I'd really like access to Exchange servers that's more stable and
functional than what's available now.
Thanks,
jerry

Is there a way to set up gnome-screensaver or gnome-sesssion to autologout when idle.

I would like to give the admin the ability to setup xguest to logout
when the session is idle for some time period?
I know this is a risky thing to do.

by Lev Shamardin
Hi all,
Not sure if this is a right place to ask, but have not found a more appropriate
place.
Is it planned to package and release kernel 2.6.27 for Fedora 8?

PackageDB Upgrade
by Toshio Kuratomi
The package Database had a major upgrade today. Unlike the past several
updates this one doesn't have any stunning new end-user features. What
it does have is a lot of reorganization and optimization. You should
notice a much snappier response when loading a package page. You might
also notice some bugs because of the restructuring of code. If that
happens, let me know. You can either email or find me on #fedora-admin
on irc.freenode.net. I'm abadger1999.
Thanks,
Toshio

sox soname bump in devel (F10)
by Tom Callaway
sox had a few F10 showstopper bugs that needed to be fixed, but
unfortunately, the upstream fixes came with a soname bump (from 0.0.0 to
1.0.0). Looking at repoquery, the following Fedora packages depend on
sox:
asterisk-voicemail (only calls out to /usr/bin/sox, does not need a
rebuild)
mozplugger (only calls out to /usr/bin/sox, does not need a rebuild)
psi (I don't think it really needs sox, the spec file has the broken
"Requires(hint): sox")
Thus, this should affect no one. I glanced quickly at a repoquery call
on rpmfusion, and it says that dvd-slideshow and uade-mod2ogg depend on
sox, but not on sox's library.
Thanks,
~spot

Call for submissions for EclipseCon 2009
by Andrew Overholt
Hi,
The submission system for EclipseCon 2009 is now open:
http://www.eclipsecon.org/2009/submissions?page=submissions/
The deadline is the 24th of November which is coming up very soon.
For those who don't know, EclipseCon is a great conference that is
taking place this year from 23 - 26 March, 2009 in Santa Clara,
California. It's the premiere North American Eclipse gathering and is
an awesome place to learn about the latest Eclipse happenings, interact
with everyone in the community and generally have a good time.
There are a variety of submission categories to choose from so read the
descriptions here:
http://wiki.eclipse.org/EclipseCon_2009_Category_Descriptions
** New for 2009 **
This year we're having a special 1 day Linux DevCon in conjunction with
the Linux Foundation. For this one day sub-conference we are looking
for short talks, long talks, and tutorials dedicated to the intersection
of Eclipse and Linux. We'd like to hear about Linux developments that
will affect Eclipse. Much Eclipse development on and for Linux takes
place on "enterprise" distributions so talks discussing more bleeding
edge developments and ideas about the future of Linux technologies would
be especially welcome. We are also interested in learning about
Linux-specific Eclipse tooling and Linux adoption of Eclipse tools -
what's good, what's bad, what's missing? What recent and upcoming
developments in the Linux ecosystem will affect Eclipse? We would also
like to hear about development, deployment, and use of Eclipse
technologies in multi-platform environments. What are some areas where
Eclipse and Linux technologies can make more effective use of each
other? What can Eclipse learn from Linux and other Free Software/Open
Source communities and vice versa?
Let me know if you have any questions. I look forward to lots of great
submissions!
Thanks,
Andrew

Software is once again unpatentable in the United States
by Valent Turkovic
Quote from http://www.pli.edu/patentcenter/blog.asp?view=plink&id=368 :
Here are the highlights:
* The Federal Circuit rejected the that the "useful, concrete and tangible
result" inquiry as being inadequate.
* Patentability under 101 does not depend on process steps, but rather
requires a tangible machine or transformation into a different state.
* *Software* *is* *once* *again* *unpatentable* *in* *the* *United* *States*
* In order to protect what was formerly known as patentable software we
will have to go back to claiming a machine that provides certain
functionality.
* Software patents that have been issued under the previous understanding
of the law are almost certainly now worthless.
