Pirut: Edit -> Repositories mock-up -- Part 2.
by Debarshi Ray
http://debarshiray.multiply.com/journal/item/85
I have created a new design for the Manage Repositories dialog. I have
tried to incorporate Jeremy's suggestions regarding key management
being a repository specific issue and not a top-level one, etc..
For your reference here is the list of possible use cases that were
proposed last time:
1) Jim is getting more involved in Fedora and wants to enable the
updates-testing repository so that he can be involved in testing
updates. Also the disable case here.
2) John has a local mirror that he prefers to use for getting his
Fedora updates and would like to point directly at it rather than the
mirror list.
3) Sue read about some new software that's available from $vendor and
would like to add their repo so that she can install and try it out.
4) $vendor provides a repo file on their website and would like to
have it be easy for end-users to add that to their configs
5) Sally is a power-user and likes to micro-manage the details of
therepository configuration.
6..X) Probably some more :)
Once we start agreeing on the basic top-level design, I would start
creating the "Add", "Edit" and "Remove" dialogs.
Comments?
Happy hacking,
Debarshi

inkscape in rawhide segfaults immediately on start up
by Richard W.M. Jones
I haven't looked into this in great detail yet, but I wonder if this is
a known problem? There is no bugzilla that I can find and it's a
complete show-stopper so I can't imagine how it got past even the most
minimal test.

separate sysv subpackages
by Dmitry Butskoy
There are some packages in Fedora which place their init scripts as a
separate subpackage. That way packagers avoid the dependency of
initscripts (and a lot of related dependencies as well), when they do
not use initscripts in some local environments.
How it could be useful for Fedora? Whether the other packages should
split their init scripts as well?

feature proposal: NetworkManager umts plugin
by Rudolf Kastl
Hello to you!
Actually in my eyes it would make perfect sense to have a
networkmanager umts plugin because the current ppp support just
doesent provide the required functionality to provide proper umts
functionality integration.
What it is essentially missing is:
* the showing of signal strenght and
* the possibility to scan for and
* switch to different providers as well as
* maybe some configuration option to either track the spent time in a
defined timeframe and/or
* the used up bandwidth.
opinions welcome!
regards,
Rudolf Kastl

Fedora 7 kickstart problem with rebuilt Everything image
by Howard Wilkinson
We routinely rebuild systems from a kickstart driven facility we have
built. This uses a Fedora image - in this case fedora 7 Everything with
the updates merged in. We have run into 2 problems with this as opposed
to the original release image.
First the version of yum available in updates currently is incompatible
with the version of anaconda. The problem is that this version of yum
does not create the headers directory and anaconda assumes it will exist.
anaconda-11.2.0.66-1.i386.rpm
yum-3.2.1-1.fc7
To get round this we have reverted to yum-3.2.0-1.fc7.noarch.rpm for now
but will probably try out the development releases of anaconda and yum
next week.
More worrying is a problem with dependencies in building the kernel
initrd images. The newly built Everything regime has the latest kernel -
kernel-2.6.21-1.3228.fc7 - as available from updates. But when the
kickstart install runs the mkinitrd cannot find /sbin/mdadm as the mdadm
package is not a dependency of the kernel (and should not be for all
builds but ....[1]) This has the effect of allowing the build to
complete but when the system reboots LVM cannot find the logical volume
groups because the raid has not started.
/We build our systems with mirrored boot partitions on /dev/md0 and
mirrored /dev/md1 on the remainder of the disc with logical volumes
on this portion of the disc including the root partition. Hence the
problem above.[1]/
To get round this we are rebuilding the kernel to require the mdadm
package - but this is really not what we should be doing. Somewhere in
the RPM, YUM, Anaconda, regime we need to be able to specify that mdadm
(and lvm2) needs to be installed prior to the kernel installation, only
for our particular configurations not in general. Any ideas anybody?

Plan for Today's (20070723) Release Engineering meeting
by Jesse Keating
Below you will find a list of topics that we'd like to go over in the next
RelEng meeting that is scheduled for Today, Monday at 1700 UTC in
#fedora-meeting on irc.freenode.org:
/topic RELENG-Meeting - F8Test1 - JesseKeating
/topic RELENG-Meeting - Open Discussion
You want something to be discussed? Send a note to the list in reply to
this mail and I'll add it to the schedule (I can't promise we will get
to it tomorrow, but we'll most likely will if we don't run out of time).
You can also propose topics in the meeting while it is in the "Open
Discussion" phase.
If your name/nick is on above list please update the status on the
ReleaseEngineering/Meetings/Agenda page in the wiki ahead of the meeting. That
way all the other RelEng members and interested contributors know whats up
ahead of the meeting. And we will avoid long delays in the meeting -- those
often arise if someone describes the recent happenings on a topic directly in
the meeting while all the others have to wait for his/her slow typing...
