Update on Fedora 7 release progress
by Jesse Keating
We're getting closer, ever so closer. Many of the hurdles have been cleared,
such as getting all packages signed (which is why rawhide is slow to show up,
lots of little churn), testing final code paths of compose tools, clearing a
name through legal, etc...
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=FC7Blocker is the blocker
bug. We're currently either fixing, or heavily scrutinizing and downgrading
what's left on this tracker. We're continuing to test various things from
our test matrix (which I need to update with my results):
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/QA/7/FinalTreeTesting
Due to the logistics of moving things around for a release and press
announcements and all that, we have a firm go/nogo decision to make at 2pm
EDT tomorrow (Friday) for a release on the 31st. You'll probably see some
discussion on this list, some in #fedora-devel, and as the nature goes, some
discussion will happen over cube walls between various folks. We'll try to
be "public" about what's going on as best we can.

Rawhide appears to be shipping the iwl3945 driver at the moment (test 4
had iwlwifi). Whilest iwl3945 is very unstable when combined with
NetworkManager, it does at least work for me to some extent - I couldn't
get iwlwifi to work at all. I'm currently testing iwl3945 without
NetworkManager to see if that works around my stability problems (and I
note there are quite a few iwl3945 bugs in bugzilla).
Since iwlwifi seems to work better for some people and iwl3945 seems to
work better for others, and neither requires propriatory stuff in userland
anymore, is there any reason not to ship with both and let the user
choose the one which works for them?
(I'm using an iwl3945abg in an Acer TravelMate 6413).

ifcfg-* files vanishing
by Steve Hill
I'm not sure how to go about debugging this problem.
If I set up a /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-wlan0 file for my
wireless network NIC and ifup wlan0 then everything works. If I reboot
and the wireless NIC is not present then during the boot process
something moves the ifcfg-wlan0 file to ifcfg-wlan0.bak. This is
obviously not great since then when the NIC becomes available again all
the config for it has vanished so I can't ifup it until I've put the
ifcfg-wlan0 file back.
However, I have absolutely no idea what might be removing the
configuration on boot. My only guess is that it might be Kudzu, but that
really is a bit of a blind guess.

Can you please look at my youtube video and then respond if I use
system-config-network how it is not supposed to be used or if

Boot Anaconda with Grub rpm package
by Sindre Pedersen Bjordal
I usually do upgrades via Anaconda by copying the vmlinuz and initrd.img
from the isolinux dir on the install media to my /boot and then adding
an entry to /etc/grub.conf to boot into Anaconda and do the Upgrade.
Today I decided that replacing this manual process by a rpm file
containing the files with the necessary scriplet shebang for the grub
stuff would be a better idea. Attached is my .spec so far.
This works for me, as in install/uninstall add/removes the grub entry
and the right files. Rebooting and selecting the "Install/Upgrade Fedora
6.93" entry in the grub boot menu actually boots Anaconda and asks for
the install method.
Some questions though:
Is this usable for anyone but me?
Can this be distributed in Fedora, can it be distributed by me? Am I
doing something wrong by repackaging the binary initrd.img and vmlinuz
files?
Multi-arch: My initial idea was to just create one tarball per arch and
have them in the spec as Source0, Source1 and so forth and use arch
macros in the spec to determine which tarball to use on which arch. Does
anyone have a better idea?
SRPM here:
http://folk.ntnu.no/sindrb/packages/fedora-bootanaconda-6.93-1.fc7.src.rpm (7.3 MB)
SPEC here: http://folk.ntnu.no/packages/fedora-bootanaconda.spec
(spec is also attached)

No add-on repos in kickstart file after install
by Joachim Frieben
I have successfully installed FC5/FC6 using FC6 and FC 6.91 rescue CDs [for later versions, DHCP is broken] via http mode. Adding update repos at install time allows [mostly] to install updated packages on the fly.
However, the kickstart file written out after install does not show any trace of this additional channel. Bug or feature?

ppc64 egrep weirdness
by Michael Schwendt
In a ppc64 build, which succeeds on ppc/i386/x86_64, I've run into a
situation where egrep fails
echo 'private1: PRIVATE: (libc.so.6:GLIBC_PRIVATE) __open_catalog' | egrep 'PRIVATE:.*libc.*(__open|__nanosleep)'
while the corresponding grep succeeds:
echo 'private1: PRIVATE: (libc.so.6:GLIBC_PRIVATE) __open_catalog' | grep 'PRIVATE:.*libc.*\(__open\|__nanosleep\)'
Does anyone have a theory why egrep fails only on ppc64 in this case?

PowerTOP tool released; time to fix the wasted laptop power on fedora?
by Arjan van de Ven
Hi,
some of you already know that I've been working on getting Linux (and
Fedora) to be a lot better about power usage on laptops by avoiding
spurious wakeups and context switches and such (look at the "wakeup" bug
in fedora bugzilla ;).
As part of my job at Intel I've now released a user friendly tool that
allows everyone that uses it to see what the biggest problems on their
own laptop are... The results internally to Intel have been really good;
several people gained an hour of battery just by using the tool and
getting rid of (or fixing) 'broken' applications.
PowerTOP can be downloaded from http://www.linuxpowertop.org
for completeness I've attached the full announcement text I used in
other places below. I hope that enough people will use it and report /
fix issues in software so that the whole Linux experience on laptops
will be a lot better in a few months..
----------------------
What's eating the battery life of my laptop? Why isn't it many more
hours? Which software component causes the most power to be burned?
These are important questions without a good answer... until now.
The Linux 2.6.21 kernel introduces the so called tickless-idle
feature. This feature allows the processor to be really idle for long
periods of time, rather than having to wake up every millisecond for
the timer tick. Current processors save a lot of power if they are
idle for long periods, which translates into a longer battery life for
your laptop, or a lower energy bill for your datacenter. However, a
Linux system consists of more software than just the kernel, and there
are many tunables involved. It's not easy to see what is going on, and
as a result the behavior is sometimes far from optimal, and a lot of
power is wasted.
Intel is proud to announce the PowerTOP tool
(http://www.linuxpowertop.org), a program that collects the various
pieces of information from your system and presents an overview of how
well your laptop is doing in terms of power savings. In addition,
PowerTOP will provide an indication of which tunables and software
components are the biggest offenders in slurping up your battery time.
PowerTOP will update it's display frequently so that you can directly
see the impact of any changes you are making.
A typical Linux distribution has many components that wake the
processor up frequently for no good reason. In our testing with
PowerTOP, we have seen many cases where with some simple fixes, the
battery life of typical laptops was increased by one hour or more!
We are providing fixes for several of the issues we identified, and we
encourage the Linux community to help us in this quest to get the
maximum battery life out of your (hopefully Intel based) laptops. Try
the PowerTOP tool, join the mailing list or the IRC channel and
provide feedback, problem reports or fixes!
