Can I suggest you use ExclusiveArch: %{ix86} x86_64 fedora is built by people
for other archs than those. with a side effect that these things get built
for archs they should not be built for.

KDE-Live-CD: basic cd layout and localizations
by Sebastian Vahl
Hi.
I've created a new basic layout for the cd:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/FeatureFedoraKDE/KDELiveCD
The size on todays rawhide is about 667 MB.
Please tell me which package should be added or removed.
On todays KDE-SIG-Meeting Rex Dieter and Kevin Kofler suggested to give
the local communities the ability to create their own localized cds
easily. To do this there should be an extra configuration file for each
language which adds the needed packages and do some configurations. And
also the additional language must fit on one cd.
A second option for localized versions could (or should?) be a
live-dvd with all available language packages. livecd-creator in git
seems to be able to do this (but I haven't checked this yet). [1]
I've created a first draft for an configuration for the german language.
This adds kde-i18n-de and koffice-langpack-de to the cd. Also the
standard keyboard layout, the local timezone and the locale is changed.
To change the keyboard layout inside kde I've used an ugly
workaround.[2]
If anybody knows a better way, please tell me. :)
Compared to the version above this one needs ~675 MB.
To create the configuration files for different languages I need some
informations from one person that uses the language:
1. /etc/sysconfig/i18n
2. /etc/sysconfig/keyboard
3. /etc/sysconfig/clock
4. keybordtype from "system-config-keyboard --help"
5. needed additional packages (eg. scim-* or fonts-*)
And of course all are invited to discuss this. :)

The need to re-detect usb-storage devices (on resume and on-the-fly plugging)
by Michel Salim
I use an external hard drive with my laptop, that is detected and
mounted fine (unless HAL and selinux-policy are out of sync) if
plugged in at boot time. If I plug the drive after boot, or after
resuming, the device node is created properly, but
gnome-volume-manager does not register the device and has to be
mounted manually.
Does gnome-volume-manager currently make a distinction between
internal and removable devices? It would make sense to assume USB
devices are removable -- sometimes I'd forget to manually unmount a
drive before suspending, and in an ideal world this should happen
automatically (not sure which subsystem's task it is to do so). Right
now, the laptop would resume with the device node still there (e.g.
sdb, sdb1), and the device still "mounted" but not accessible, and a
new device node is created (sdc, sdc1).
Which Bugzilla component should this be filed under?
Thanks,

fc6 gaim update is BROKEN!
by drago01
FC6 got a gaim update today which was not in updates testing before.
Its completly broken... changing status without typing a message -> segfault
When logging into icq it shows a message "Could not add buddy 1"
Downgrade is also not possible because it somehow changed the contents
of .gaim
Why has this package made it to updates without any previous testing?

hplip: hp-toolbox advertising?
by Bernard Johnson
I was working on finding/reporting some bugs with the hplip package and
noticed that there was no menu entry. Knowing that a graphical program
with no menu entry wasn't the norm, I was about to file a bug, except
when searching for a duplicate, I came across this:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=170762
mclasen(a)redhat.com:
"We don't give free ad space to HP on our menus..."
I find that to be both an interesting and hypocritical comment. Please
someone tell me how:
1) HP provides free GPL software for controlling and printing with their
printers. 100% opensource. Yet we remove the menu entry because that
would be advertising. (And when I say 100% opensource, I mean there is
code, not a binary firmware blob or such b.s.)
2) RealVNC is a company that has a product called VNC. They provide a
opensource version of the product that is included in fedora. This
program gets free "advertising space" on the menu including the VNC
logo, which AFAICS is identical to the company logo except the word "REAL".
3) And the in F7, there will be CodecBuddy
(http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/FeatureCodecBuddy) which will
direct users to the Fluendo Webshop (https://shop.fluendo.com/) to
purchase proprietary codes when they try to play media that they do not
have a code for (http://hadessuk.blogspot.com/2007/03/totem-news.html).
Hey, I'm all for these type of convenience settings, but fair is fair,
but the hplip: hp-toolbox menu item back on the system menu.

Announcing Fedora 7 Test 3 (6.92)
by Jeremy Katz
Welcome to Fedora 7 Test 3.
I am please to announce the third of four test releases for Fedora 7.
Downloads
========
DVD and network installation are available.
http://torrent.fedoraproject.org/
The recommended method of download is via BitTorrent from this site.
http://fedora.redhat.com/Download/mirrors.html
HTTP, FTP, and RSYNC downloads are available from Fedora Project mirrors
listed above. Note that not all mirrors may be synced at this time.
New in Fedora 7 Test 3
========
This test release includes significant new versions of many key components and
technologies. The following sections provide a brief overview of major
changes from the last release of Fedora.
Merger of Core and Extras
========
* The Fedora Core and Extras software repositories are being merged,
resulting in a shared infrastructure and a single repository of packages to
which everyone is invited to contribute.
* Fedora 7 Test 3 is packaged initially as a Desktop/Development
Workstation/Server implementation, called "Prime". This spin is delivered in
DVD iso format only as a trial, see
https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-devel-list/2007-February/msg00993....
for the discussion on this.
* Many more packages are available in the development repositories.
Live CD
========
* This test release includes an i386 ISO for a Desktop Live CD. This Live
CD features the ability to install to a hard disk using the same graphical
Anaconda installer as the non-live CD variant.
* This test release also includes an x86_64 ISO for a Desktop Live
image. Due to size, this will require a DVD. As with the i386 Live
image, the ability to install to a hard disk is available.
* This test release features a new i386 ISO for a KDE Live CD. Note
that as of this writing, this ISO is only available via bittorrent. It
should be available via the mirrors in the near future.
Desktop
========
* This test release features GNOME 2.18
* A brand new Echo icon theme is included as the default in this release.
This icon theme is incomplete, but with appropriate feedback and progress,
may become the default in the general release.
* Fast User Switching is now available via the fast-user-switch-applet.
See http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/FeatureFastUserSwitching for more
details.
Performance
========
* System performance is generally slower in the test releases as compared
to the general release since we enable several options that help with
debugging.
System Administration
========
* System administration tools may be modified under the testing process.
System Level Changes
========
* Fedora 7 Test 3 features a 2.6.21rc5 based kernel. Current release
information is being tracked on the kernel release notes source page.
(http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Docs/Beats/Kernel)
Amanda
Users who upgrade from older releases need to read the amanda.conf and
amanda-client.conf man pages to learn about the the new syntax for calling
amandad, as well as edit the /etc/xinetd.d/amanda configuration file to
follow the new syntax.
Road Map And Release Schedule
========
* http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/7/
Intended Audience for Test Releases
========
Test 1 is targeted for developers, who use it "at their own risk", and
contains many bleeding edge packages.
Test 2 is for early adopters. Most things should work and we need to your help
to find what is broken.
Test 3 is for early adopters. Most things should work and we need to your help
to find what is broken.
Test 4 is for beta users. This is the time when we must have full community
participation. Without this participation both hardware and software
functionality suffers.
Quality Assurance for Test Releases
========
The Fedora Project has a process in place for ensuring the highest possible
quality even in our test releases. Many bugs are identified, prioritized and
fixed during the testing process. We also have a list of known bugs in this
release. Refer to http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/QA/7/Test3TreeTesting for
more details.
Translations of Release Notes
========
Due to the rapidly changing nature of test releases, translations of release
notes for test releases are not practical. The initial goal is to have a
translation of the release notes included in the test4 release and to allow
community review and correction before the general release. As always, the
general release is translated following the established practices for
localization (l10n) and internationalization (i18n)
(http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/L10N), which result in comprehensive,
high-quality release notes in a variety of languages.
About Fedora
========
Fedora is a set of projects sponsored by Red Hat and guided by the
contributors. These projects are developed by a large community of people who
strive to provide and maintain the very best in free, open source software
and standards. The central Fedora project is an operating system and platform
based on Linux that is always free for anyone to use, modify, and distribute,
now and forever.
You can help the Fedora Project community continue to improve Fedora if you
file bug reports and enhancement requests. Refer to
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugsAndFeatureRequests for more information.
Thank you for your participation.

Initscripts and LSB compliance
by Michal Marciniszyn
Hi,
due to my recent investigations, nearly none of the initscripts that we
have included in RHEL/Fedora are LSB (Linux Standard Base) compliant.
I'm not talking about problems with %config stuff, but about the
functionality of the scripts. Main problems are constructions like
[ -f /etc/service_conffile ] || exit 0
which ends the script with exit code 0 when there is no conf file for
the service. Another big issue is wrong functionality of status call of
initscript... And of course, the wrong return codes. The LSB compliance
is IMHO one of our targets, so we should take care of this one. The LSB
definitons can be found on:
http://refspecs.freestandards.org/LSB_3.1.0/LSB-Core-generic/LSB-Core-gen...
Our first step should be to produce guidelines (we have some for RHEL,
but they are not obeyed), then force the developers to obey that. It is
no big deal, but having all scripts behaving correctly and in some sense
the standard way is definitely good think.

Please remember that F7 ia64 is _unsupported_ by Fedora. You can file
bugs,
but be sure to file them against the devel branch of Fedora Core. Also,
add "fedora-ia64" to the "blocks" field of the BZ.
I am not building an ia64 Live ISO yet either. I am planning to do this
in the near future.
