[SNIP]
Over the years I have heard Eric S Raymond pontificate and assail and I
grow more tired each time I am subjected to one of his ramblings.
ESR, as he is frequently called, is a harm to the free software movement,
and I for one, welcome his departure from this list. Damn it, but now I
have the potential of having to read his crap on the Ubuntu forums. What's
the over/under on the number of days/weeks before he makes some sort of
proclamation about what's wrong with Ubuntu?
Eric, why don't you just shut up and roll your own release? Oh, wait,
that's right, you are all talk and no action.
In free software, we contribute when we can and help when we can, whining
and quitting is for losers.

Call for beryl package maintenance help
by Jarod Wilson
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
Hello there,
So I've been a bit behind the curve keeping up with each beryl release.
I don't actually *use* beryl most of the time or have time to track what
all is going on upstream.
That being the case, I would *really* like to hand these bits off to
someone else to maintain, though I would be willing to either stick
around as a co-maintainer or at least provide guidance, when needed.
Anyone interested?

PHP/MCache Beta Help, web cluster
by markw@mohawksoft.com
Hey, I have an extension to PHP that enables the session management
extension to spread across multiple web servers easily. It used to be
called "msession" and an old broken version is still included in PHP. I
have just finished up a new version of it, fixed a lot of bugs, and added
a better persistent session storage system.
If you are struggling with a number of web servers behind a load balancer
and need a solution, I'd like you to try MCache and tell me what you
think. I need testers.
It has been lightly tested on PHP 4.4.5 and should work on later versions.
It is in beta and I am looking for help with it.
MCache is GPL and the Phoenix library it requires is LGPL.
You can find it at http://www.mohawksoft.org. Look at the "MCache
Handbook" for more information. There are two tarballs under "Download."
What I need:
Does it compile on your machines? (If not, what are your problems?)
How does it perform?
It is probably not 64bit compatible, but I am willing to work with someone
with a 64 bit machine to make it so.
Anything else you want to help out with.
I think this is a neat system for reasonably sized web farms and could
potentially make clustered PHP a snap.

Creating a jackuser group
by Anthony Green
fedora-music-list hosted a thread[1] recently on making it easier to run
the jack-audio-connection-kit server. It's a bit of a mess right now
because users have to manually edit /etc/security/limits.conf before
anything will run.
In order to clean things up, it was proposed that Fedora come
pre-installed with a jackuser entry in /etc/group, as well as including
the following in /etc/security/limits.conf...
@jackuser - rtprio 20
@jackuser - memlock 131072
Then users simply need to be added to the jackuser group in order to run
jackd and associated applications. I believe this models what other
distros are doing to support jack users. We could even have a
consolehelper enabled wrapper to ask users if they want to be added to
this group if they aren't already when the run qjackctl.
Most of the discussion is captured in mail threads referenced by this
bugzilla entry....
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=221785
So, if this sounds like a sane thing to do for Fedora 7, do I simply
file bugzilla issues against the setup and pam packages (which
own /etc/group and /etc/security/limits.conf respectively).
Any comments?
Thanks,
AG

automatic login with gdm
by Gianluca Sforna
Is it possible that last gdm update I did yesterday (1:2.16.5-1.fc6)
broke the autologin feature ?
I had it automatically logging into my wife's account but today at
boot it gives:
Authentication failed. Letters must be typed in the correct case.
Did I mention now I can _not_ login with any other user??? ;)
Cheers

Fedora 7 media sets
by Jeremy Katz
Since test1 and FUDcon there's been a lot of feedback on what media sets
we should actually build, test and distribute by default. It's pretty
clear that the mix of "desktop bits without any development" didn't
really fit the needs of a lot of our users. And the incredibly long
thread about what belongs in a server spin showed that we don't really
have a good handle on what use cases we're actually trying to fill with
it.
Given this, the board stepped back to think a bit about what we're
trying to achieve and what the problems we were trying to fix. The list
was pretty short:
1. Must provide a way for people to do their own custom versions
including packages from all of the Fedora universe.
2. Want to provide at least one installable "single CD Fedora" to
help in parts of the world with less bandwidth
3. Need to provide a way to install via media for the following
cases:
* Desktop environment
* Developer use
* Simple LAMP server
4. Try to be as little of a burden on our mirror and testing
infrastructure as possible.
Given the above, we'd like to look at doing a somewhat different set of
bits for Fedora 7 than was previously in the plan. But, we're still
open to feedback to change things somewhat. The on the table things
are:
* Fedora 7 Desktop LiveCD. It's installable and it's a single CD,
so it's a good step towards the single installable desktop CD
case.
* Fedora 7 DVD. With everything for desktop, development and
"mainstream" server tasks. This ends up replacing what was
previously Fedora Core. There's something of an open question as
to whether we'd provide CD isos here or not. Or CD isos via
bittorrent only?
* Fedora 7 Everything. 2+ DVDs. More bits than you can shake a
stick at. Not available on the mirrors; bittorrent only.
Hopefully can share the first disc with the Fedora 7 DVD. This
would be the most at-risk and the most likely to fall off due to
time pressure.
* Make your own Fedora 7 step-by-step guide. This is important to
help ensure that people understand and can make their own custom
spins.
Also, Rex is continuing to lead the efforts for the Fedora 7 KDE release
and hopefully the Fedora 7 KDE LiveCD.
This feels like it'll get us to a place that's reasonable for Fedora 7
and to where we can then actually get experimentation done with "hey,
how can I get a single CD" rather than putting Fedora 7 on the line for
the experimentation.
Comments? Flames? ...

Announcing a change in the Fedora 7 schedule
by Jesse Keating
One of the big Features of Fedora 7 is a merged core and extras. In order to
accomplish this, we need some improvements to the buildsystem currently used
by Fedora Extras. We need these improvements done or mostly done by the
Feature Freeze of Fedora 7, which was originally set to be the 20th of
February, 4 days from now. It is very clear that these changes will not be
ready by then.
To accomplish these changes (and others) in time for the Feature Freeze, we
have added another month to the schedule, introducing a Test 4, and moving
the Feature Freeze as well as String Freeze up to Test 3 freeze, March 19.
This moves the general availability date from April 26 to May 24.
For further discussion on this topic, please use the fedora-maintainers list,
which I am attempting to set reply-to.
