Multiple concurrent versions of Python
by Aurelien Bompard
Hello y'all,
During the event "Solutions Linux" in Paris, I met a Zope developper who had
very good arguments on how Fedora could be improved to support more Python
applications (and Zope in particular).
Since Fedora is rather python-oriented, and we're considering Zope for our
CMS, I think we should consider this. I maintain the Zope & Plone packages
in Extras, and I must say it's complicated, because Zope requires specific
versions of python (not the latest) and Plone requires specific versions of
Zope :
- Latest Plone requires Zope 2.8.5
(http://plone.org/products/plone/releases/2.1.2)
- Latest Zope is 2.9, which works with python 2.4.2, but zope 2.8.5 is
unsupported on python 2.4, it requires python 2.3.4
(http://www.zope.org/Products/Zope/2.8.5/Zope-2_8_5-released)
Since Fedora only ships python 2.4, there is no way for the Zope & Plone
packages to run on a supported python.
The solution discussed with the Zope dev would be to ship python 2.3.5.
There is a way to ship both versions, using the "alternatives" system (like
sendmail and postfix). The symlink would be on /usr/bin/python
and /usr/bin/python2.
The only problem is with python modules and python applications which
install files in /usr/lib/python2.4
- python modules should be compiled for both versions of python ex:
python-imaging and python23-imaging
- python applications installing files in /usr/lib/python2.4 should not
have #!/usr/bin/python in the shebang, but the required version :
#!/usr/bin/python2.4 and the package should require python24. The current
python rpm could Provide python24.
This is the way Debian does it, for example. And it works :)
Since installing concurrent versions of python is technically possible, do
you think this could be done in Fedora (of course, I'm not talking FC5
here) ?
What do you think ? Any corner cases ?
Regards,
Aurélien

GNOME desktop settings not saved
by Émeric Maschino
Hi,
For several package updates now, my GNOME desktop settings aren't saved
when I log out my session, most notably the desktop icon locations.
There used to be a checkbox in the past asking for saving the changes at
log out, but it disappeared in the latest package releases. I've noticed
there's a similar option in the advanced preferences, but it has no
effect on my system. Regarding the desktop icons, I'm always getting in
this order: the Computer icon, an empty space, the Trash icon and the
Home icon. I've seen on screenshots published on the web that there
should be a Network Servers icon, but it's missing. The funny thing is
that, if I completely erase the GNOME-related stuff in my home
directory, the first time I'm logging in, the desktop icons are
correctly organized: first, the Computer icon, then the Home icon and
finally the Trash icon. Still no Network Servers icon however. But if I
log out and log in again, the Home icon has been moved below the Trash
icon, leaving an empty space between the Computer and Trash icons as
described previously.
Is there anybody out there experiencing the same annoyance? If needed,
this is on an Itanium workstation with up-to-date Rawhide.
I don't know if this is related, but when I log out my session, the
countdown in the dialog box saying that my session will be automatically
closed in 60 seconds isn't working (still displaying 60 seconds).
Cheers,
Émeric

relocatable rpm .spec question
by John Ellson
I'm trying to make an rpm relocatable.
I've added "Prefix: /usr" to my .spec file and by using "rpm -ivh
--prefix=/home/ellson/usr foobar.*.rpm"
the package installs binaries correctly in new location.
But I have a %post containing "%{_bindir}/foo" that isn't getting
relocated properly.
Its still looking for /usr/bin/foo instead of /home/ellson/usr/bin/foo.
I tried "%{prefix}/bin/foo" but it still resolves to /usr/bin/foo
Is there a variable set by the --prefix option that I can use in %post ?
I couldn't find a solution in:
http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/drafts/rpm-guide-en/ch10s05.html

I specifically suggested this be done for the FC6 cycle.
Upstream is not looking to adopt Tango out of the fear that without
vendor support, it will look like a GNOME only project and thus scare
off the KDE crowd. Or so it seems. Thus vendor buy in is very important,
I for one, would love to welcome my new Tango overlords to Fedora since
I find their style very pleasing and I agree with the aims out getting a
unified icon standard.
It sounds like The tango developers and artists are very keen on
cooperating with us to make this happen.

Re: Multiple concurrent versions of Python
by Alan Milligan
Guyz,
Zope 2.8.5 and greater support Python 2.4 officially. Zope-2.9.x and
Zope 3 actually *require* it.
Plone's dependency chain is a little more complex. Adventurous people
are running it on Zope-2.9, although I'd not recommend it. The 2.5
series of Plone will run on CMF-2.x which will definitely run on
Zope-2.9, I'm not sure if there are issues with a 2.8.x port of this.
We have an extensive set of Zope and Plone RPM's at
https://linux.last-bastion.net/RPC2/up2date/plope, but we've not
received much interest from any of the major Zope/Plone ISV's.
There is presently a community push into egg territory, which is rather
an anathema for RPM packagers.
I'd absolutely not recommend attempting to package a lot of this stuff
unless you actually intend to hang out on zope-dev and/or plone-dev as
these are rather nuanced fast-moving targets.

Logging out of gnome session almost always hangs
by Thomas J. Baker
Does anyone else suffer from the fact that almost every time I log out,
the gnome desktop hangs with just the background showing? Going to a
console and looking at the running processes includes gnome-session,
gnome-panel, and lots of applets. I'd file a bug but I'm not sure what
component to file it against.

Just did a kickstart install of rawhide and it did not exclude the
