Elektra Project at http://elektra.sf.net seems to provide some of these
features.

Long-term, it's actually best for the sysadmin to only have to deal with
_one_ interface for all configuration tasks. Automating config changes
will be made consistent and trivial. Just think of it, you could run
(fictional example) something like...
config-tool change <app-name> <config-key> <new-value>
...and presto! you just reconfigured the app. E.g.:
config-tool change apache ServerRoot "/foo/bar"
Or something like...
config-tool dump <app-name> | less
...and, well, it's self-explanatory.
Certain values in the <app-name> space could be reserved for system
settings. E.g.:
config-tool change system-eth0 ip-address 192.168.2.7
How about this?
config-tool -remote some.other.server.com change <app-name> \
<config-key> <new-value>
I would _love_ to be able to do that (if everything's correctly
implemented, with security in mind, let's not be clueless morons,
yadda-yadda).
I hate the freakin' text files with passion. It would be great if all
config files had the same format, ideally either something along the
lines of daemontools or djbdns (specially designed so automation is
super-trivial), or heck I would even take XML - but only if it was
universally used by all apps and system components.
Several different user-level tools could be implemented, offering
different views into the same data, and different mechanisms to change
the same settings:
- a command-line tool as exemplified above
- a text-based pseudo-GUI (think Midnight Commander)
- a true GUI, based on GTK or Qt or what have you
- APIs for PHP, Perl, Python, C, Java, etc. for Web interfaces or for
direct access from within other apps
If push comes to shove, the configuration daemon could be stopped and
the XML backend (or whatever) could be edited manually by those who
really need to do that.
I am dreaming about this since... I don't know, maybe 1999 or so.
P.S.:
Please note that I'm not necessarily speaking of gconf in particular.
I'm merely discussing the advantages of a well-written configuration
management framework - which gconf may or may not be yet, I'm not
familiar enough with it.

CPU Frequency Scaling
by Jon Nettleton
I run an athlon xp-m enabled laptop and have for years now. I have gone
through all the iterations of powernowd, cpufreqd, cpuspeed. One of the
things that has always bothered me is I have the little cpufreq-applet
on my taskbar, but I can't control the cpuspeed with it when running a
frequency daemon. Today I was bored on the phone and right clicked on
it, went to preferences and what do I see but the option to display and
choose a scaling governor.
The kernel has had the scaling governor modules for a while now and I am
not sure why Fedora is still relying on the cpuspeed daemon by default.
If anyone in the know could answer that question I would appreciate it.
I put together some quick shell scripts to handle loading the modules
and setting a default governer. Before I submitted an RFE, I wanted to
get some input from you all. Attached is a tarball of the two files
needed to enable the cpu governor modules on boot and set a default
governor.
1) cpugov.modules goes in /etc/sysconfig/modules (needs to be
executable)
2) cpugov goes in /etc/sysconfig
3) tweak /etc/sysconfig/cpugov to your liking
4) chkconfig cpuspeed off
Then make sure and enable scaling governor control in your
cpufreq-applet.
Can't wait to get some feedback.

Fw: Build Error (Job 22980): sblim-cmpi-base-1_5_4-7_fc7 on fedora-development-extras
by Mark Hamzy
Does anyone know what I am doing wrong here? I am trying to rebuild
sblim-cmpi-base and I am getting this error message. I think that when it
tries to install tog-pegasus in the build root, it is installing exim and
exim wants libpq.so.4 which is in postgres? I don't want exim or postgres.
Thanks,
Mark

2.6.18-1.2239 soft lockup on CPU#0
by Mihamina Rakotomandimby
Hi,
I use FC5 on an MSI KT4A-V [1] and an AMD Athlon 2800+ CPU.
Kernel is kernel-2.6.18-1.2239.
When booting, I got a "soft lockup detected on CPU#0".
2.6.15 kernel (the one instaled at install time) works fine.
Would you know an existing bug I could confirm or should I open one?
I already searched, and there are many similar problems.
What to do then?

adding scripts to hibernate/suspend
by Harry Hoffman
Hi All,
wondering if anyone has some pointers as to go about adding scripts to
be executed when suspend/hibernate occur in FC6.
i recall these used to be in /etc/acpi but this seems to have changed. I
googled and found some items about gnome-hal but the examples used
programs that don't seem to be within the fedora install.
Any pointers? I'd like to be able to shut down my atheros card, as I'm
not sure it's suspending.
Thanks,
Harry

Maintainance of hwdata
by Till Maas
Hiyas,
new bugs about hwdata are assigned to Karsten Hopp in bugzilla, but according
to the changelog of hwdata he never made any change to it, ever. So is this
normal for fedora core packages? Or is there maybe some false information
about the maintainer of hwdata in Bugzilla because the open bugs seem to get
not much attention.
Regards,
Till

Since I've sinned by talking from memory, and from memory of a known
gconf abuser, here is a quick sysadmin-oriented review of the latest
gconf files I have access to (rawhide system)
1. the file hierarchy is weird. The default file is named "%gconf.xml",
which seems to protect against inexistent collision risks (gconf seems
to only allow those files or directories, so anything ended in .xml
would have fit the bill)
2. I can understand the choice to only allow foo/%gconf.xml instead of
foo.xml files (leaf vs parent node safety), but only because of my
background. Most humans will find this choice weird, unintuitive and
heavy-handed on directories
3. all the conf files I've skimmed only use XML nesting for technical
not functional reasons, they don't even have the first level of grouping
of .ini files, so one wonders if the XML potential is really used there
(esp. WRT the deep filesystem directory nesting used at the same time)¹
4. OTOH the format is needlessly nesting and verbose for technical
reasons. A sample (composition of gconf extracts):

<gconf>

<stringvalue>/usr/share/backgrounds/images/default-wide.jpg</stringvalue>

<stringvalue>systray</stringvalue>

<stringvalue>trash_applet</stringvalue>

</gconf>
a. what the hell is mtime doing there? If the gconf users are not live,
why should they care when an entry was modified ? If one or several
users are live and you need to track concurrent modifications, surely
this can happen in a memory cache without ever hitting the file system ?
This bit alone prevents safe manual editing
b. why is the typing in the conf file itself and not in a separate file?
(that could be written using a standard syntax like Relax NG generic
tools like vim or xsltproc have a chance to understand)
c. the boolean entry needlessly uses two lines
d. for the following entry: now we've written the entry is a string
(which tells us nothing, string basically means untyped) instead of
filling it with an xml string directly, someone though it was smart to
stuff the xml string in a <stringvalue> element. Why the heck for ? I
could understand it if you could have several stringvalue children, but
multivalued elements 1. have another type² 2. wrap their stringvalues in
li elements anyway.
Put all those remarks together and you could have :

<gconf xmlns="typing-schema-id">

/usr/share/backgrounds/images/default-wide.jpg

systray

trash_applet

</gconf>
typing-schema-id being the id of a schema properly declared in /etc/xml
for vim, libxslt and friends
I don't think this variant would be any more difficult for apps. For
humans it would definitively be nicer.
¹ ignoring the schema part for – IMHO it could safely be moved
to /usr/share as it's not were configuration takes place.
² I won't expand on the type + ltype + type-in-li thing

bug in makewhatis?
by Brian Wheeler
I've been trying to figure out where apropos/whatis is finding this.
--------
[bdwheele@wombat etc]$ whatis fuse
Fuse (3pm) - write filesystems in Perl using FUSE
fuse (rpm) - File System in Userspace (FUSE) utilities
fuse-devel (rpm) - File System in Userspace (FUSE) devel files
fuse-libs (rpm) - File System in Userspace (FUSE) libraries
fuse-smb (rpm) - FUSE-Filesystem to fast and easy access
remote resources via SMB
[bdwheele@wombat etc]$ man fuse
No manual entry for fuse
--------
Where are these 'rpm' section man pages coming from in the makewhatis
index? It'd be nice if there was some actual output (like installation
time, version, etc) when one did a man on an RPM page...
Thanks
