Keep in mind that bits don't land until March 2007.

Progress reports of my students fixing bugs
by Hans de Goede
Hi all,
About a week ago I announced I wanted some relatively easy to fix bugs
to use in a lab lesson for students to teach them / let them practice
with systematical fault searching.
Many thanks to those who posted bugs, although I did find the response a
bit lacking. Since I want to continue with these lessons next week and
need a few new bug here is a progress report on the bugs which I gave to
my students:
---
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=206873
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=206874
Problem found and fix-patch attached to bug
---
http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=214745
Really 2 bugs, first ImageMagick creates a corrupt .ico and then it
crashes reading it, debugging the crash reading it is in progress and
I expect the students to come up with a fix next week.
---
| -- CMakeLists.txt --
| include(foo.cmake)
| foo()
|
| -- foo.cmake --
| macro(foo)
| message(SEND_ERROR "foo")
| endmacro(foo)
|
| $ cmake CMakeLists.txt
| ...
| Segmentation fault (core dumped)
In progress, the segfault happens because the code tries to access
element 0 / [0] of an empty STL vector, why its empty is not clear though.
---
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=213212
This is really many bugs with mc ftpfs after the ipv6 support patch, my
students have pinpointed the problems with passive ipv4 connections and
also have figured out how to fix it, I expect them to write a fix for
the passive problem this wednesday.
---
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=203336
Torcs segfaults after a short while when using "openal" for the sound,
but not when using "plib". I just tried in 1.3.0 and there is still the
same problem... either it's in torcs itself (which BTW exits
when /dev/dsp is busy, not very user friendly!) or in openal, dunno.
My Students failed to reproduce this on FC-6 and have requested the
reporter to try to see if he can reproduce it.
---
So as you can see my students are doing good work, and I / they need
more relatively easy bugs to keep up there good work! So please send me
more bugs. I need bugs (do I?) :)

Hans

After power-off booting halts
by Pekka Savola
Hi,
A couple of weeks ago I started seeing the following with FC5 on
Thinkpad X30:
- if the laptop is powered off without graceful shutdown (e.g., power
runs out), the first booting stops after 'recovering journal'
somewhere around 'mounting filesystems read/write' (the specific
place is difficult to find out as the boot messages overwrite each
other). By 'stops' I mean that you the system responds to keys, but
bootup process doesn't progress (the same as happens for example
with ntpd start for a while if network isn't up).
- powering off the system and rebooting again results in a successful
startup.
The system is up to date wrt updates and updates-testing. I've seen
this at least with kernel-2.6.18-1.2239.fc5 and
kernel-2.6.18-1.2224.fc5, possibly earlier as well.
Anyone else started experiencing something like this?

X in FC7
by Adam Jackson
I've started a wiki page for some ideas of things I'd like to see us get
done for X in FC7:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/XInFC7
Currently a bit skeletal, but please do add ideas, no matter how wild.

Scanning with XSANE not more working
by Marcus Hartig
Hallo!
What has been changed since FC5 (rawhide) and FC6 that I can not more use
xsane to scan with my bearpaw ta1200 usb scanner? I've nothing changed...
sane-find-scanner says:
found USB scanner (vendor=0x055f, product=0x0212, chip=GT-6816?) at
libusb:004:002
I've checked the configs from sane and see no changes. "Strace xsane"
tells something about missing /dev/scanner and I made manually a link to
the usb device. No success.
xsane tells me: no devices found?
:-(

Marcus

howto package kernel-like
by Mihamina Rakotomandimby
Hi,
I would like to make a package behaving like the kernel:
When a new version is available, it installs near the old version, but
it does not replace the old version.
Has that kind of package a special name? What keyword or special
mentions have I got to place in the spec file to get this behaviour?
Of course, the install name/directory will be different as of the
versions.
Thank you.

Proposal - replace beagle with tracker
by Neal Becker
I don't know much about this subject, but I saw this thread on ubuntu. I,
as many others, have seen problems with beagle.
BTW, this ubuntu whiteboard is also very interesting.

In addition to minimal resource usage, Meta Tracker has some very
appealing features over Beagle, such as RDF searches and very flexible
metadata storage (arbitrary tags or other metadata can be attached to
files).
The CVS version <https://launchpad.net/products/tracker/trunk> has
evolved nicely since the last release.
