Proposal: Consolidate yum directory usage
by Ralf Ertzinger
Hi.
I think the current usage of configuration files and directories
for yum has somewhat gotten out of hand.
yum-3.0.1-1 uses one config file (yum.conf), and two configuration
directories (yum.repos.d and yum, which in turn just contains pluginconf.d)
under /etc.
I propose to move all yum configuration files and directories to
/etc/yum (move /etc/yum.conf to /etc/yum/yum.conf, move /etc/yum.repos.d
to /etc/yum/repos.d). This could easily be done by a %post scriptlet
during an RPM transaction. Symlinks ought to be set (yum.conf -> yum/yum.conf
and yum.repos.d -> yum/repos.d) to keep other packages working which
drop files in yum.repos.d. And there are tons of documents which reference
/etc/yum.conf.
Maybe yum ought to show warnings (after FC7, maybe) when it detects
that /etc/yum.conf or /etc/yum.repos.d still exist (even as symlinks)
and advise the user that usage of these files is deprecated.
If there is interest in this I'll produce patches for the spec file
(to migrate the config) and for yum (to find files in the new locations
and to show deprecation warnings)

Equivalent of debootstrap for Fedora
by Laurent Rineau
Hi,
As a Fedora Extras contributor, I would like to install parts of rawhide in a
chroot (I currently run FC-5, and will upgrade to FC-6 soon).
I know that I can install it with Anaconda, in a partition of my disk. But I
would have prefere to do it without rebooting my computer.
Is there a tool, similar to Debian's debootstrap, that allows to install a
version of Fedora in a chroot? In a way, mock has this feature. Is there a
practical way to use parts of mock code to do it?

X server consuming lots of CPU cycles
by Paul Michael Reilly
In the past few days I've noticed that the X server process is
consuming 20-80% of the CPU on a regular basis as opposed to a more
reasonable once in a blue moon. I haven't updated in about a week and
was reluctant to do so until I saw a fix for the libXfont/xfs issues.
I don't suppose anyone else is seeing unusually high X server usage
recently or is aware of some change that would explain what I'm
seeing. FWIW, I am running a A31p Thinkpad with 1G RAM and a 2+Ghz
processor. The logs do not seem to show anything out of the ordinary.

ifup-ipsec: Manual v. Automatic keying
by Bojan Smojver
Disclaimer: I know bugger-all about IPSec.
I looked through this script in devel and it appears that it does
something like this (among other things) when using setkey -c:
------------------------------
spdadd $SPD_SRC $SPD_DST any -P out ipsec
${SPD_ESP_OUT:+esp/$MODE/${TUNNEL_MODE:+$SRC-$DST}/require}
${SPD_AH_OUT:+ah/$MODE/${TUNNEL_MODE:+$SRC-$DST}/require}
;
spdadd $SPD_DST $SPD_SRC any -P in ipsec
${SPD_ESP_IN:+esp/$MODE/${TUNNEL_MODE:+$DST-$SRC}/require}
${SPD_AH_IN:+ah/$MODE/${TUNNEL_MODE:+$DST-$SRC}/require}
;
------------------------------
The HOWTOs (located here:
http://lartc.org/howto/lartc.ipsec.automatic.keying.html and here:
http://www.ipsec-howto.org/x299.html) mention only the ESP bit in
relation to automatic keying, but not the AH bit. From the HOWTOs:
------------------------------
#!/sbin/setkey -f
flush;
spdflush;
spdadd 10.0.0.216 10.0.0.11 any -P out ipsec
esp/transport//require;
spdadd 10.0.0.11 10.0.0.216 any -P in ipsec
esp/transport//require;
------------------------------
------------------------------
#!/usr/sbin/setkey -f
#
# Flush SAD and SPD
flush;
spdflush;
# Create policies for racoon
spdadd 172.16.1.0/24 172.16.2.0/24 any -P out ipsec
esp/tunnel/192.168.1.100-192.168.2.100/require;
spdadd 172.16.2.0/24 172.16.1.0/24 any -P in ipsec
esp/tunnel/192.168.2.100-192.168.1.100/require;
------------------------------
FC5, that I'm using for my IPSec to PIX connection, is similar to devel
(i.e. it has the AH bits in spdadd). Anyone on the list knows why the
discrepancy?
The HOWTO method lets me establish a tunnel to PIX. The one from the
script does not...

Xlib: Maximum number of clients reached -- firefox?
by Joshua Baker-LePain
I'm rather happily running FC6 on my Thinkpad Z61t. I got even happier
when I discovered that suspend works without a hitch, with no pre-suspend
fiddling required. On resume, everything comes back up including my
WPA-encrypted ipw3945 wireless connection, and this with my HDD in AHCI
mode. All very, very shiny.
So I haven't shut down or logged out in a week. Today, though I started
getting errors like this upon trying to start new apps:
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Maximum number of clients reached
'xrestop' takes an absurd amount of CPU time to run, but seems to indicate
that firefox has a huge number of windows open (over 2500). I certainly
don't have that many windows/taps actually open, but I also haven't shut
down firefox in almost a week.
Is this a firefox bug that needs reporting? If not, where should I be
looking?
Thanks.

hsqldb's long-standing packaging bug
by Michel Salim
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=166466
hsqldb has some trivial packaging bug that's been untouched for ages.
Alas, we Extras maintainers can't currently touch Core packages..
Could someone step in and fix this? For some reason it's currently
assigned to someone who's not a Core developer judging from the email
address.
Thanks,
