yum annoyances
by Gene C.
I call the following annoyances rather than bugs because yum is working as
designed. What I really wondering is if an enhancement to yum is
appropriate. While it may be appropriate, these cases may also be in the
"too hard" or "not worth the effort" category.
I will also caveat this by saying that I have only seen these cases working
with the development tree and not with "production" version. I will also say
that a "fresh install" will not have the problem but, even in development, I
prefer updating rather than installing unless I am testing the installer.
Case 1: A package is install but, now, has been deleted from the
development/update tree and the installed package blocks updates. The
current answer is to manually remove the package (yum remove or rpm -e) if,
and only if, you know that package was deleted .. the recent case of dbus-qt.
Would it be possible to have some metadata which would flag to yum that the
package needs to be removed.
Case 2: This is similar to case 1. In this case, an older version of a
package is in the development/update tree, The currently installed packages
include one or more packages which are a "more recent version" but one that
has problems ... therefore, we need to "roll back" the package. Again, this
can be handled manually via yum remove/install or using rpm --oldpackage if
you know that the situation exists.

Yep, that would be nice. It seems that Evo 2.4.x and Dovecot may have
some interoperability issue that were addressed in 1.0.

Yum bug?
by Dennis Jacobfeuerborn
After cleaning up with "yum clean all" I get the following error when I try
to do a "yum check-update":
Setting up repositories
Cannot open/read repomd.xml file for repository: development
Cannot find repomd.xml file for development
Error: Cannot find repomd.xml file for development
Not sure if I should file a bug or if I'm doing something wrong on my end?

have em2820 em2840 modules in fedora core 4
by Mihamina Rakotomandimby
Hi,
I have a DAzzle DVC 90 video acquisition device.
I see it was added to the kernel supported cards here:
http://www.kernel.org/hg/linux-2.6/?fd=6f11eee29e5d;file=Documentation/vi...
Would you know if the Fedora Core 4 flavour kernel embed it?
Please tell me what should I do to have it working under Linux.
I know how to build rpm from src.rpm if needed (editing the specfile
then run rpmbuild with the right options)
I ask because with the stock Fedora kernel, the module em2820 and em2840
are not found.
Thank you.

Stupid (?) lib64 questions
by Paul W. Frields
I have an x86 system, running only official FC4 + Extras, on which I am
seeing a few packages that are referencing "/usr/lib64":
(1) - php*-5.0.4-10.5, which now is trying to find the mysql module
under /usr/lib64 instead of /usr/lib.
(2) - My Fedora Extras blogtk-1.1-4.fc4 package, built on hammer1.f.r.c,
contains files that are installed under /usr/lib64.
Although the latter doesn't appear to affect proper functioning, the
former is wreaking havoc now that I am testing a package that uses
php-mysql, since it is looking for /usr/lib64/php4/modules/mysql.so and
not finding it there. (I can fix this with a symbolic link.) My
understanding is that the former situation is probably a bug, which I'll
file, but what is up with the latter? Is it to be expected that FE
stuff will sometimes end up with %{_libdir} evaluating to /usr/lib64 on
build machines? Clues delivered gently would be helpful.

HTTP Load balancer
by Mike McGrath
I understand that Apache 2.2 might make it into FC5 (Its currently in
test 1). I was wondering if there were any plans beyond that to include
an HTTP based load balancer? Perhaps a TCP based balancer?

Yeah, I had issues of similar nature in mod_spin as well. It seems that
when you're shipping a library with your own piece of software, the
RPATHs get encoded (sometimes as build directories, sometimes as
standard paths) and the build fails. So, I'm doing some ugly sed-ing in
my Makefile.am to get rid of that:

udev slowness and selinux
by Jason Dravet
There has been some discussion on fedora-selinux-list about udev being
slowed by selinux. One of the comments about the slowest is the number of
nodes in /dev. Decrease the number of nodes in /dev and booting would be
faster. I checked my /dev directory and I think I have found some nodes
that are redundant. I have 32 ttySXX nodes in /dev. Please correct me if I
am wrong but ttyS is usually used for serial ports. On my system I have two
serial ports, both of which are disabled in the bios. I removed my modem
when I switched to DSL, so shouldn't there be 0 ttyS nodes? There are 64
ttyXX nodes. Aren't these the virtual terminals I use to login locally? If
so shouldn't there only be 7 (Ctrl-F1 through Ctrl-F7)?
The selinux-list group is looking into the issue, but I thought maybe until
a fix is available this is something that could be looked into. I could be
wrong and all of these nodes could be needed, but is so what are they used
for?
Thanks,
Jason
