Trying to build the adm8211 kernel module
by Kyrre Ness Sjobak
I am trying to build the driver for my admtec 8211 based wlan card
(SMC2635W), but i am having some difficulties due to the removal of the
kernel-source rpm. (an otherwise perfectly sensible choice.) I was just
about to make my own exploded source three, when i came over this notice
in the release notes:
"""
An exploded source tree is not required to build kernel modules against
the currently in-use kernel.
For example, to build the foo.ko module, create the following file
(named Makefile) in the directory containing the foo.c file:
obj-m := foo.o
KDIR := /lib/modules/$(shell uname -r)/build
PWD := $(shell pwd)
default:
$(MAKE) -C $(KDIR) SUBDIRS=$(PWD) modules
Issue the make command to build the foo.ko module.
"""
Now, those drivers already has a makefile - and it is a bit more
complicated. It does among other thing build a number of .c files into
this module...
Can anybody help? The driver shall after what i heard be a part of the
official kernel (first, the -mm series), but it isn't "ready" yet. When
that is said, the driver has served me well, and is still rapidly
improving.
The driver can be found here:
http://aluminum.sourmilk.net/adm8211/
If somebody can help me create a working makefile, i shall ofcource send
the changes back so that it can be a part of the main distro of the
driver (i would guess a separate fedora makefile would be the
easiest...)

kernel cpufreq dothan support -- kernel patch proposal
by david paeme
/* i've also submitted this into bugzilla, bug #144060) */
Hello,
The kernels distributed with FC3 (up to the 2.6.9.715 version in
updates/testing) seem to be missing support for intel's Dothan Pentium-M.
The processors are recognized, but the speedstep-centrino module only
has support for acpi frequency scaling on them.
This compared to the older Banias model's 'table' support, which means
that cpufreq knows more than max/min speeds, and is able to scale
fluently between them.
Here's a patch wich adds support for all Dothan cpu's up to the 755
version (2.0 Ghz).
http://localhost.ruhr.de/~stefan/acerTM292/patches/cpufreq-speedstep-doth...
Applying this patch to the latest FC3 kernels seem to work for me
(dothan 1.6ghz, stepping b0), and it also patches into the official
2.9.10 kernels.
The patch also seems to stop the gnome cpufreq applet to spot complaining...
What do you people think about this? useful? good for inclusion? It
certainly is nice to have this stuff working...
bye,
David.

rpmbuild python bindings
by Alan Milligan
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
Hi,
Do any python bindings exist for rpmbuild??
Specifically, I'd like to be able to detect broken build dependencies
and recursively build and install these as part of an automated
python/Makefile script.
I could of course just scrape the output :( but it would be excellent if
there were wrappers for rpmbuild.
Ideally, these would allow one to parse the spec file into a python
structure and to explicitly call %prep, %build, %install etc etc

Kernel 2.6.10 Can't Open Initial Console on FC3
by Joseph D. Wagner
The newly compiled kernel gets through everything OK including mounting the root file system as read-only EXT3. However, it freezes on the very last line, which says:
Warning: unable to open an initial console
If I switch back over to the kernel that came with the distribution, everything boots fine, so I'm assuming the problem lies in the way I configured the kernel.
I ran "find / -name genromfs" which found nothing.
I feel like an idiot for posting this. I'm probably missing something obvious.
I have:
* Pentium 3
* 256 MB RAM
* PCI ATI Rage 128 Graphics Card
* PS/2 Mouse
* PS/2 Keyboard
* Fedora Core 3
Thanks in advance.

ATI RS350 chipset
by Jason L Tibbitts III
I just put together a system with a Gigabyte GA-8TRS350MT board; this
has what it calls the ATI RS350 chipset. It's a pretty nice board
and (so I thought) not particularly new, but it seems to be a bit
ahead of current kernel support. I figured I'd post a note in case
anything is searching
Here's an lspci:
00:00.0 Host bridge: ATI Technologies Inc: Unknown device 7833
00:01.0 PCI bridge: ATI Technologies Inc: Unknown device 7838
00:13.0 USB Controller: ATI Technologies Inc: Unknown device 4367 (rev 01)
00:13.1 USB Controller: ATI Technologies Inc: Unknown device 4368 (rev 01)
00:13.2 USB Controller: ATI Technologies Inc: Unknown device 4365 (rev 01)
00:14.0 SMBus: ATI Technologies Inc: Unknown device 4363 (rev 03)
00:14.1 IDE interface: ATI Technologies Inc: Unknown device 4369 (rev 01)
00:14.2 IDE interface: ATI Technologies Inc: Unknown device 436e (rev 01)
00:14.3 ISA bridge: ATI Technologies Inc: Unknown device 436c (rev 01)
00:14.4 PCI bridge: ATI Technologies Inc: Unknown device 4362 (rev 01)
00:14.5 Multimedia audio controller: ATI Technologies Inc: Unknown device 4361 (rev 03)
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon 9100 PRO IGP
02:0b.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)
I checked the curent PCI ID list on sourceforge and these aren't
listed; I'd add them myself but I have no idea what to call them.
FC2 (which I currently have rolled out on 200 machines) didn't install
it all. FC3 did install, but the IDE was dog slow and required a
little kernel patch for chipset recognition. kernel-2.6.10-1.1056_FC4
added support for that. (This is bug 142647.)
Graphics seem to work under FC3 well enough. I haven't tried 3D stuff
yet. I can switch to text consoles but when I do a shutdown (with X
running) the screen goes completely dark until the machine reboots.
USB support works for mice but when I use a plain USB2 memory thingy
(any of several models I have laying around) things don't work so
well. Upon inserting the device (with this morning's
kernel-2.6.10-1.1063_FC4) I see:
usb 3-3: new low speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 2
ohci_hcd 0000:00:13.1: Unlink after no-IRQ? Different ACPI or APIC settings may help.
which is a bit more helpful than earlier kernels. lsusb at this point
hangs. Booting with noapic doesn't help; then I get this:
usb 3-3: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 2
usb 3-3: device descriptor read/64, error -110
usb 3-3: device descriptor read/64, error -110
usb 3-3: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 3
usb 3-3: device descriptor read/64, error -110
usb 3-3: device descriptor read/64, error -110
usb 3-4: new low speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 4
and lsusb still hangs. acpi=off gives the same. This is not yet in
bugzilla; I'll keep experimenting and file a complete bug once I've
trolled through the BIOS settings.
I haven't tried sound yet.
If anyone has any suggestions, I'd sure appreciate them.

Behavior differences between anaconda and "real" boot? (sata_nv problem)
by Matthias Saou
Hi,
I own a neat little AMD64 Shuttle SN85G4 (V1) which works great with FC3,
so I recommended buying the same to my dad. He bought the same, but it's V3
now, which apparently features a newer nForce3 250 chipset, and possibly
some other minor changes.
I only had an i386 FC3 install DVD handy when he got it, and with only a
modem connection, it really was my only option, so I installed that...
things went fine (except the Radeon 9200 through the DVI output, the
display went all black all the time after a few seconds, VGA works fine
though).
My problem here is that it installed flawlessly on the Serial-ATA hard
drive attached to that nForce3 250 chipset (sata_nv module), but the
machine was never able to boot from the installed system.
I tried all that I could and came to these conclusions :
- It's not an IRQ problem (it shares IRQ11 with the firewire, but also does
at install time and I tried with another IRQ and firewire disabled, same
thing).
- It's not an ACPI or APIC issue (or at least isn't fixed by disabling
them).
I actually really don't know what the problem can be. I tried with the
latest updated kernel, same thing. I also tried creating an initrd which
preloads all the same modules anaconda loads before loading sata_nv (usb,
firewire, scsi, forcedeth) in case the reverse engineered eth driver did
something weird that helped, or in case the delay in loading them gave
enough time to the drive to spin up or something, but no go.
Booting the install CD in rescue more _always_ works at getting the
Serial-ATA drive detected, whereas booting the installed system _never_
does (grub is there, and the initrd is loaded fine). The error on google
only shows LKML reports about problems with sata_via back in the 2.4 days.
The exact error is this :
ata1 is slow to respond, please be patient
ata1 failed to respond (30 secs)
All the kernel messages above (about detecting the chipset and both ata1
and ata2) are identical for the kernel used in anaconda and the one
installed. The kernel version, as well as the libata and sata_nv versions
reported are identical too...
So I was wondering what the issue could be. Some anaconda magic that the
installed system doesn't perform? Having an i686 kernel on that x86-64
machine and anaconda having yet another one?
For now I've put a good old parallel ATA drive, but still can't access the
Serial-ATA drive from that installed and booting system :-(
Matthias
