Re: FC3 wishlist - sound server
by Jonathan Andrews
Kernel people, pretty please... why not rewrite /dev/dsp to be a virtual
device ?
If the virtual device owned the real device - say at the fastest
playback and record rates then emulated instances of the device for each
process that wanted to open it - mixing together the results to give a
common output. It must be possible W2K does something similar:-) and it
had as much baggage to carry forward.
http://www.opensound.com/virtmix.html
Something like this but transparent with just a single /dev/dsp.
I know this isn't as simple as it sounds, but it does fix a lot of sound
problems, including allowing multiple incompatible sound servers on the
same machine.

CVS access to fedora components (util-linux)
by Huw Lynes
OK this is probably a dumb question.
In bug 123416 it is mentioned that a patch has been added to util-linux in CVS
in preparation for the next release.
http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=123416
Is this in the publicly accessible CVS? If so I'm being stupid because I
cannot find it.
The SRPM in development looks like it's older than the comment in bugzilla.
Also it is dated 2003 while its changelog is 2004. Odd.
Thanks,
Huw

5. Your goals in the Fedora Project
* Which packages do you want to see published?
My main focus at work and personally is all things Python. Initially I'm
interested in getting the psycopg python Postgresql adapter into Fedora
Extras and doing QA for Python related packages in the queue. I'm open
to doing QA for other packages that interest me too.
* Do you want to do QA?
Yes, definitely.
* Anything else special?
I became inspired to help out with the Fedora project after listening to
a recent presentation by Warren Togami at a HUMBUG meeting in Brisbane.
I noticed that a) the project needs more hands and b) my experience with
development and RPM packaging (see below) could be of use to the project.
6. Historical qualifications
* What other projects have you worked on in the past?
I have some experience working on open source projects but nothing major.
I have submitted small patches to the
psycopg (http://initd.org/software/initd/psycopg),
tinc (http://www.tinc-vpn.org) and
pktstat ( http://users.dart.net.au/~leonard/software/pktstat/) projects.
These patches were accepted and used.
I have submitted bug reports to several other projects and am capable of
working with upstream authors in order to get bugs fixed. I have a
working knowledge of the open source development process.
* What computer languages and other skills do you know?
My primary language and passion is Python. I am also competent in C/C++
and Bash scripting. I can read Awk, Perl and Java.
I have extensive experience with RPM packaging. I personally maintain
over 160 RPMs for in-house and open source software at my place of work.
~ These packages are automatically pushed out and installed at 100's of
sites running our embedded Linux product.
* Why should we trust you?
No particular reason :) I will earn your trust over time through the
work that I do with the project.

[FC3] - Wishlist - RSS feed reader

With the remove of the RSS reader in Evo 2.0, there's no a RSS feed
reader in Fedora Core. Lifearea and Straw are in Fedora Extras. Could
they be in core?

sendmail-8.13.0
by Kenneth Porter
Is sendmail-8.13.0 on its way to Rawhide or Updates?
What's the easiest way to tell? Is there a good standard place to check to
see what packages are in the pipeline? I'm guessing I should look in one of
the many directories under <http://download.fedora.redhat.com>, but which?
And wouldn't it be nice if directories there contained full "ls -lR"
listings so one could rapidly find something without paging through the
directories?

Practically nobody uses network transparency in X, except some geeks
who remember what an X terminal was. I saw an endless progression of
various network audio servers, starting with NCD's NAS in 1989 and going
from there. There's just not a compelling application for a network
transparency of sound samples. Mind this is very different from media
streaming in general - the way, say, VideoLAN does it, by virtue
of streaming compressed over some sort of loss tolerant and congesion
aware protocol.
If JACK wants to survive, it has to support media streaming. Once it
does it, it automatically becomes "too complicated", and an undergrad
somewhere starts a new network transparent audio project immediately,
thus the cycle continues.

Automatic reboot in kernel 2.6.7-1.467
by Earle Nietzel
After installing kernel:
kernel-smp-2.6.7-1.467
from the development tree and upon rebooting the system never gets to
the point to mount filesystems and it reboots itself.
I have no problems with kernel:
kernel-smp-2.6.6-1.422
or previous versions.
It seems to reboot right after IDE detection and before it mounts the
root filesystem, the last thing I can see on the screen is RAMDISK.
