Fedora Documentation
by Alan Cox
Has anyone come across any good tools to manage a "bookshelf" of online
documentation and books in general.
Thinking about the big documents relevant to Fedora and credibly
maintained (ie not download the howto's) I rapidly got past 20 good
free/shippable documents. The trouble is they are in multiple formats
even if they could all be output as PDF.
- GNU manuals like the Emacs manual are generally texinfo but
very comprehensive
- Other online books are docbook (3,4,sgml and xml)
- Some stuff is in OpenOffice
- One or two are in weird "see we followed the license" xml
but rescuable
A properly organised bookshelf seems an ideal thing to have, I'm just
wondering about tools

Adaptec Ultra320 SCSI RAID-1 driver
by Dario Lesca
Does anyone have experience installing FC1 or FC2 on a system with an
adaptec ultra320 scsi card?
The latest driver available from adaptec is for RH9. Do you know if this
driver is okay?
Is avaiable a driver version for FC1 (kernel 2.4) or FC2 (kernel 2.6) ?
Many Thanks

kernel-module rpms under FC2
by Aaron Bennett
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
Hello,
I need to package ndiswrapper (from ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net) for
Fedora Core 2. I'm planning to follow the Fedora.us packaging
guidelines as I'd like to see the package included in Fedora Extras at
some point. ( Also, they seem like fairly sensible guidelines. )
I've found these kernel-module specific guidelines from the Fedora.us
wiki. They are pretty interesting, however, according to the author,
they are also outdated and possibly not relevant to 2.6 kernels.
http://www.fedora.us/wiki/PackagingKernelModules
Does anyone have any feedback or suggestions on how packaging kernel
modules should work with Fedora Core 2?
Cheers,
Aaron Bennett

Inflation of explicit build requirements
by Michael Schwendt
The appearance of explicit build requirements like 'gcc-c++', 'cpp' (!),
'perl' or even 'sed' in a couple of src.rpms indicates that there are
different opinions on what packages are considered as belonging into a
fundamental build environment.
I'm afraid that if this trend continues, packages will soon buildrequire
'make', 'findutils', 'gcc', 'gawk' and others. This kind of inflation of
explicit build dependencies would be both insane and limiting. Limiting in
that it enforces dependencies on fragile package names and specific
compiler packages. Insane in that some programs, such as those in the
'coreutils' suite, should be expected to be installed even in a minimum
build system.
If such build dependencies are added only to fix the chroot'ed build
environments as set up by tools like 'mach', package developers, please
fix mach's default config (yes, mach can be customized!) instead and
include more common tools in the 'build' definition. C++, Python and Perl
are way too common. Even rpm-build requires and uses Perl already.
With regard to 'cpp', the C preprocessor, it is required by 'gcc' already.
'sed' or /bin/sed are required by many other core packages, such as
'initscripts' or 'dev'.
Additionally, when building for Fedora.us Extras (and 'mach' has special
target definitions for fedora.us), there is the 'fedora-rpmdevtools'
package which depends on a set of very common development packages (some
which are required by rpm-build already anyway) and which are available in
the build system:
/bin/bash, /bin/sh, bzip2, cpio, diffutils, gcc, gcc-c++, gzip, make,
patch, perl, python, redhat-rpm-config, rpm-build, rpm-python, sed,
tar, unzip
Please, let's avoid inflation of explicit build requirements in spec
files.
End-users either have the 'development-tools' (as defined in comps.xml)
installed or not. If not, their src.rpm rebuild attempts would fail anyway
when configure scripts check for GCC. So don't aim at complete build
requirements to please end-users.
Better let's discuss whether above set should be extended. E.g. with
'gettext' and 'desktop-file-utils', as they are needed by many src.rpms.

BogoMips strange behaviour

Hi i have a strange behaviour with kernel 2.6 and BogoMips:

I think that some sort of setup like this would be beneficial. With the
advent of advanced installation tools such as apt and yum the necessity to
provide every package in the core has greatly decreased. I know I don't
like to download 4+ CDs if I only want to do a minimal install. The only
restriction I would put on the Core would be to try to make it fit on one
CD. A really stripped down Core will hamper new Linux users as much as
the current setup. Specifically, some sort of GUI based method would be
needed to provide access to the Desktop packages. I know that 3 short
years ago the fact that Slackware booted into run-level 3 instead of 5
drove me away from that distro. In hindsight it is simple to type 'init
5' onto the CLI and be in the more comfortable graphical environment. The
fact that RedHat will install a graphical desktop by default (with no need
to use the CLI until I am ready to that plunge) is very beneficial to
those of us trying to make the switch from the Redmond OS to Linux.
Also, I don't think that anyone says the following things enough:
Fedora Core 1 was a great operating system. Fedora Core 2 is a great
operating system. Sure there is work to be done, but Fedora is working.
I use it at home on my Athlon64 3000+. I have installed both the x86 and
x86_64 versions. Keep up the good work.

irda problems [FC2]
by k b
hello, and excuse me for posting this to the devel
list, i just hope some of you can help me and others
struggeling with this issu (and creating a better
working version for the next fedora).
i am trying to get the idra (infrared) services to
work with my mobile phone, but it does not seemt to
work.
here is what i have done and how some config files
look.
i have fedora core 2, kernel 2.6.5-1.358 (selinux=0).
dmesg |grep -i tty reports
ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A
ttyS1 at I/O 0x2f8 (irq = 3) is a NS16550A
the second is the infrared port.
i used setserial the following way:
setserial /dev/ttyS1 port 0x2f8 irq 3
the devices look like:
crw-rw---- 1 root root 161, 0 Jun 6 13:11 ircomm0
crw-rw---- 1 root uucp 4, 65 Jun 6 13:11 ttyS1

then to have my nokia 6110 mobile phone (with hardware
modem) to speak with the computer i have previously
been able to do:
irattach /dev/ttyS1 -s
and then use the /dev/ircomm0 port for communication.
however now when i run irattach /dev/ttyS1 -s
i get the following in the messages log.
Jun 6 13:31:09 computer irattach: irattach: tty:

Jun 6 13:31:09 computer irattach: exiting ...
i have looked at the descriptions at
http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Infrared-HOWTO/index.html
this has helped before, but this time, nothing.
any help would be appreciated.

hmmm... i wouldn't call that a problem. it only needs to work for the
apps that are included. who cares if xine works - it is not included in
fedora anyway.
my point is: proper soundmixing should be a goal for fc3. i don't know
which ways there are to achieve this goal, if its dmix or anything else,
but it needs to be done (imho).
